Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan set to table takeover bid for fallen Spanish giants Malaga – reports

By Glen Williams

Friday 28th February 2020

The Bluebirds chief was recently thought to be reducing his portfolio of clubs, however he has been mooted as one of the leading contenders to take over a club in Spain

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan is reportedly a leading candidate to launch a takeover bid of Spanish club Malaga CF.

As recently as last summer, it was reported that the Bluebirds chief was considering selling his 20 percent stake , believed to be around £100m, in MLS side Los Angeles FC, because he wanted to streamline his focus on his "beloved Cardiff City".

However that seemingly never came to fruition and it now appears Tan could indeed be adding another club to his four-strong portfolio. As well as Cardiff City, Tan owns Belgian Belgian First Division KV Kortrijk and Bosnian club FK Sarajevo and is co-owner of Los Angeles FC.

Euro Weekly News claim that a number of consortia are interested in taking control of Malaga, but Tan's Berja group are considered to be one of the leading contenders.

Malaga have recently been placed into administration and the subsequent rumblings have been messy.

Former owner Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani has been ordered to testify in court on April 15 after the small number of shareholders in the club reportedly pushed for him to be investigated owing to allegations of money-laundering offences.

It is just the latest in the sad recent history of the Spanish club, who, less than a decade ago, were challenging at the top end of La Liga and enjoying stints in the Champions League, reaching the quarter-finals in 2012-13.

They had a string of big names in that era, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Santi Cazorla, Jeremy Toulalan and Isco to name a few.

But now they find themselves in the second tier of Spanish football, have entered into administration and need saving.

Whether Tan would be interested in restoring the club to its former glories remains to be seen, however should that come into being it would seemingly have both negatives and positives for the Bluebirds.

City would have strong ties with a large club in Spain, with a potential avenue opening regarding the loan and sale of players given the clubs should enjoy a mutually-beneficial relationship. This was evidenced when Cardiff signed Kenneth Zohore from Tan-owned KV Kortrijk in 2016.

However Tan's focus and finances would be further diluted and the Welsh capital club might suffer in that sense.

But he does seem as committed as ever to ensuring the Bluebirds secure promotion back up to the top flight, with WalesOnline having recently revealed the owner has turned down two separate bids to buy the club over the last 12 months.

It is not the first club to have recently been linked with the 68-year-old Malaysian businessman this season, either.

Earlier in the campaign, reports in Malaysia claimed Tan hosted a meeting with the top brass of Portuguese giants Sporting CP to discuss collaborating in the future.

Sporting's CEO Miguel Cal and the club's head of international business development, Nuno Fernando Cardoso, in September met Tan at Berjaya Times Square Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital.

While nothing has materialised from that, it seems, it was thought that partnership would also have benefited both Sporting and the Bluebirds moving forward.

Before Tan gets involved in yet another club he needs to sort out his future with our club Cardiff City first :bluescarf:

it angers me so much, it feels as if he's the school kid in the playground with the ball and cos he can't get his own way he takes the ball away, deep down the red fiasco has done him in at City. how can you possibly focus on more than one club if you want success at your football club, granted its a business unfortunately but surely you want as much punters through the gates, going into the club shop and so forth. Don't get me wrong us fans will always support city evermore but I think you now what I mean

Everyone wants an owner to splash the cash constantly and have continued success but...,As long as the school kid keeps paying the bills and gives reasonable support to our managers (up til NH this has been the case) then I’m more than happy.

Without doubt the best owner we’ve had in my 60 years supporting the club, but the time is now probably right for Tan to sell up. But as the saying goes, it’s better the devil you know, ask the Jacks and many other clubs!

I thought thats what he has been doing? If we can finally get debt free that will have been a hell of an achievement.

I agree he was to trusting with Malky and that was a huge costly mistake but if Tan can sort the debt to make us self sufficent then I stick by it would be a hell of an achievement especially after some of the previous owners, PR ran us into the ground, Sam said his debt went with him then screwed/is screwing every penny he could get from us.

I think its clear Tan is one of very few owners who is now doing whats right for the club.

Malky brought over £200mill in to our club and massive success on the pitch

FFS Annis do you honestly believe Malky would have got us that kind of ( alleged ) money in without Mr Tan backing him in the first place?
Malky spent Mr Tans millions = Promotion.
Warnock spent Mr Tans millions = Promotion.
Slade cut the costs = some fans not happy no promotion.
Harris cutting costs = seems same fans not happy.

Never thought you'd try and turn another club against him as there could be a chance that he would sell up here and go there so your wish for him to leave would come true.

Best owner this club has ever had, and I cant see anyone else in the distance who wants to lose his own money and make us debt free, while still challenging the chase to the promised land.

Let's stop having a go at VT and thank him for what he is doing rather than ripping the club apart like so many other clubs :bluebird:

100% this.

Took us on when no one else was interested - apart from the tax man. Put his money in, kept the club competitive, funded promotions, paid the bills, oversaw some great signings (and some poor ones, but who hasn’t) and made sure it’s his debt - not 100 others, HMRC or a greedy previous owner who some see as a messiah.

Made one big mistake - fixed it, who cares why...he did. It was years ago.

Not sure what some people want or expect, but when VT leaves it’ll be a worrying time for the club as we could get a Leicester type owner or just as easily a Swansea, Blackburn or Charlton one.

Couldn't agree more, personally I'm in fear for us when tan does leave,we could end up with someone who doesn't have what's good for the club at heart,I'm hoping he hangs around a while longer. :old: :bluebird:

no its not always greener..., but there aint much wrong with those 3..one won promotion last season, the other 2 are above us... :?
don't much get the idea that if you have the slightest criticism of VT you therefore think SH was the messiah either ..
