Lack of talent in South Wales Why ?

Sat Feb 22, 2020 10:27 am

You read many times on here that Cardiff are missing out on talent from South Wales but really what has come out of South Wales in the last 10 year that has made any major impact in the premiership or championship in the last 10 years that have not played for Cardiff I bet we would struggle for 20 names I will start with
Daniel James
What are the other ones ?

Wasn’t he from the Hull area mate?

You are right, but its often up to the clubs to develop local talent to a certain extent. We did well in the previous decade, but I think you would struggle to find more than a few who have played for Cardiff let alone anyone else. Swansea have developed a few but you cant include Dan James as he isn't from South Wales. I think we were interested in Jarrod Bowen when we he was young-he is from Hereford or somewhere like that just over the border-but we didn't follow it up.

You are right on james born in hull Not sure what age he came this way thou Bowen is from Ludlow I believe he is a good friend of my son having played in the same team He was told city had better players at the time even thou he was playing in the conference at the time at only 16

Joe Rodon, Joe Allen (still only 29),Ben Davies, Rabi Matando all too good for us at the moment.

Ramsey and Bale a bit older.

South Wales not a massively populous place. Certainly not compared to London or North West. The area produces its fair share.

As Cardiff fans we aspire to see our own. Of late, the "youngsters" proferrred as good enough are not local anyway but plucked from elsewhere as 19 year olds which hardly constitutes growing your own in my book.

There is plenty of talent in the youth leagues of South Wales. I watch my son play under 14s and he was in the academy linked to Cardiff City but they played just 2 games in a season so he didn't follow it up.
The whole system needs to be looked at as I've never seen a scout at any games up here in the Islwyn leagues, as years ago I knew a few who regularly attended games.

I think James was pinched from the academy of one of the clubs up north. He certainly wasn't local at any time though it may have helped that his old man was from the valleys. I would love to know what better players than Bowen we had at the time! The confrerence is about the standard of most of our "youngsters" when they are 22.

So would I like to know who was better Considering Bowen would still qualify for our u23 squad

If Cardiff are not picking them up why are other clubs not picking them up if there is so much talent , if you look at the last 10 we have not produced 20 player good enough for championship or above I remember when my boy played for Cardiff they played a local team that won the Tesco cup which was one of the highest level of completion outside of the academies at the time and city won 10-1 with half the team from the lower age group It is a massive step up Seen many kids who look good at club football and then have a trial and look poor at the level The one thing I found that Cardiff were not good at looking at a player and think we could do something with that player with good coaching

Don’t see kids out playing football any more.. they’re all in their bedrooms playing games. That’s where you learnt the skills, by hours of repetition. We’ve got a generation of really good gamers tho..
So the talent is probably still there, just not being self developed.

I haven't seen any scouts from any clubs so maybe it's because they feel it's out of the way or they dont scout these days as theres a few players from the area that gave made it previously, and one being my next door neighbour's son who plays professionally in league 2

you correct about kick abouts but.
junior football is healthy. there are more kids playing, more qualified coaches and much better facilities. its not by small margins either..

It’s not the lack of talent that’s the problem, it’s the lack of scouting.

There’s not lack of talent , there’s a lack of scouting and the only chances of getting in is from the age of 10...
