NEIL HARRIS:

Injury news?

No, Joe Ralls is back in training for the week so that’s good news. He comes back in contention which is a real positive for us. No problem for us for Saturday’s game

Jazz Richards contract ends this season, set for a new one.

Play-offs is the aim?

"Yes and you have to challenge the players."

"What do the players want? What do they expect? I think they expect a play-off push. Three or four weeks ago we were thinking ‘possibly’, now we’re not a million miles away and we want to push. Why not? Let’s embrace the play-off challenge. If we get there brilliant, if not we have to look at it at the end of the season as to why not, we are on course for a top six finish."

Harris

NEIL HARRIS:

Finally a week on the training ground…

"It’s been challenging. It’s been beneficial in two ways, some players have played a lot of football. And the lads that have had some really good minutes have had some Cup games, but against Carlisle and Reading got a lot of minutes. People like Sol and Flinty, who have been out of the group a little bit, it’s a good opportunity for them to play. Great to have an in-house game on Monday and a tough session on Tuesday, but in terms of the weather it’s been quite difficult for us."

Selection headaches…

Yeah, performances have been very good and players have been in great form and as a team we are in great form. Two of our last three games we were a little bit inconsistent and a settled team always helps. But within that you need changes as well. Competition for places is important though, to push each other to play is vital.

NEIL HARRIS:

Players making the most of those opportunities, Jazz Richards, Wales?

"We can all see Jazz’s ability, he is quality."

"Me as an observer, as an opposing manager, I was fully aware of his abilities. Mindful of his injury record, of course, but we want to come away from that, we want to talk about his future moving forward. His performances have been very good. He and Lee fought for that position and Lee has left for West Brom. The beauty of Jazz is he can play right-back or left-back as we saw the other day. We have to be careful not to push him too much, but he wants to play every game. But he is playing a run of games in the Championship and his own form is outstanding. All he can do is take care of his own performances and for me Jazz is one of my main players."

NEIL HARRIS:

Stoke, Michael O’Neill’s impression there?

"Inconsistent, up and down, he’ll be searching for that formula. Anybody can see it’s a tough job he has really taken on.

It’s not always about players being fit. He’ll be working extremely hard to get the best out of Stoke City. He has a wonderfully-talented group of players.

Stoke are a big club with a passionate fan base and we have to rise to the occasion.

I think it’s a really good game for us and a good week of us."

Harris

Stoke have lost 3 of their last 4 league games including a hammering by Derby County 4-0.
Stoke are 21st in the Championship.

NEIL HARRIS:

Josh Murphy responded too?

"Form has been excellent. Five goals in six games. His performances have been good. Whenever I’ve talked about Tomlin, Mendez-Laing, it’s not just about what they can do with a football, it’s about being part of the team. It’s about the all-round team and playing in Neil Harris’ side. Fans will see goals, assists, pace and goals, but a lot will ask whether he is working harder, covering more distance and he is doing it. That breeds trust in him from the group."

NEIL HARRIS:

Get message across to him?

Man-management is key. Especially when you come into a group that you’ve not formed yourself. Some need a little kick in the right direction in the most professional manner.

We are talking about Josh Murphy, he is someone I have to remind, vocally, shouting across the pitch, telling him we need more and he also needs an arm around him. Most players are like that these days. It’s just getting the fine balance between the two, it’s not nicey-nicey and it’s not evil

NEIL HARRIS:

Going in the right direction, good run of form, tough run of fixtures coming up?

"I talked 10 days ago about last week being the most important week of my last three months here."

"This week is just as important. We have found a consistency as a side, on the whole, that’s hard to break down and score past. We are creating more chances, more of a unit in both directions, up and down the pitch. We will improve as a team over a period of time. We are finding a way at the moment. Stoke you can look at in two ways, you can look at their squad and say ‘what a squad they’ve got’, but then you look at their league position…"

"It’s a big week and it’s not lost on me. I put pressure on the players to perform 10 days ago and they did it, so we are in a good place at the moment."

"We are on course for a top six finish."

Smith and Sanderson, how are they settling in?

"Brad has worked extremely hard to get up to speed, not just fitness wise and getting to know the truth culturally. I went with Leo and not Dion last weekend, just because Leo has played as an attacking full-back at this level. When their opportunity arises this weekend or not, we look forward to seeing them in a Cardiff shirt."

Weather come into your planning?

Training every day is difficult. Surface water and wind, you do have to consider it. Carlisle, at Stoke it can be like that too, you can’t always do the set pieces you want to do, but that’s where the players have to be adaptable and they have been very useful.

Floods…

Yes, it’s been tough for the local society and the region. It’s where Cardiff City is a workingman’s club, a close club and people look after each other. Boys are coming in from different areas of South Wales, everyone has family affected, if we can, as a group, give some joy to the club and fan base over the next nine days they will appreciate it

NEIL HARRIS:

Callum Paterson has grabbed the shirt?

"Yeah and he does it with a big heart and big desire. He wants to play as an attacking player. If I said to him go and play in goal he will, right back the same. Will he get things wrong? Yes. We all appreciate that with Callum, he’s a wholehearted player."

"He is enjoying time under me at the minute where, tactically, he is learning his position. He has to keep improving and doing it. He has given us so much as a target and a runner. Goals, gets people off their feet in the stadium. Every time he chases a lost cause the fans get off their feet and sing his name and he builds momentum. Then you’ve got Will Vaulks chasing and his long throws, it builds momentum and scares the life out of the opponents."

"When Callum scores goals, players are pleased for him, staff are pleased for him, fans are delighted for him. He’s a big character in the changing room."

NEIL HARRIS:

Danny Ward contract is up - any preliminary talks?

"Like Jazz, Danny is concentrating on his football and he is a popular figure within the club and in the changing room with me, my staff and the players."

I’ve had conversations with Danny, just about playing a week at a time, no pressure from either way."

"He’s not looking to rush off anywhere and we’re not rushing to move him on anywhere.

"Danny is at a stage of his career when, well, what’s important to him? Location? Starting, playing every minute of every game?

"A lot for him and the club to consider."

But I’ve got a super relationship with him and look forward to working with him in the short term and we will see where it takes us."

"As to Jazz, he knows there will be a new contract here for him."

Not happy with him for first Wigan goal? (Murphy)

Attacking the goal, yes, but there has to be a defensive mindset as well. We don’t have a blame culture, but maybe Josh switched off at the set-piece. We will learn from it, definitely. A lot happens in the second and third phase too. It was heat of the moment, play happened too quickly and Murphy switched off. So, I pointed out that fact and did it happen again

Sol Bamba says 'everyone is laughing at Leeds United' as Cardiff City player gives them promotion message

Thursday 20th February 2020

The Bluebirds centre-back once played for the Elland Road club but now he has told his former side they must show character if they are to earn promotion this season

Sol Bamba has told Leeds they must show character to get promoted (Image: Sky)
Cardiff City centre-back Sol Bamba claims 'everyone is laughing at Leeds United' for appearing to fall apart, but has told his former club they must show character if they are to get promoted to the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa's side have hit a brick wall since they relinquished a three-goal lead against the Bluebirds just before Christmas.

Following that match up at Elland Road, Leeds embarked on a woeful run which yielded only two wins out of their subsequent 11 games.

Indeed, the clash with the Bluebirds has had a profound effect on Bielsa himself, with the Leeds boss having admitted after last weekend's win over Bristol City that the Cardiff result still haunts him.

Their points drop off has seen the top of the table tighten dramatically in recent weeks, with Leeds, who once held a 13-point lead over third place, now just three points ahead of Fulham.

It all sets itself up for a humdinger of a promotion race as the season hits crunch point, but Bamba, who played for Leeds for a year, has urged them to stick to their guns if they are to earn one of those automatic spots.

"They just have to do what they have been doing all season [to get over the line]," Bamba, who earned promotion with the Bluebirds two seasons ago, said on Sky Sports via HITC. "Don't change anything because they have been successful so far and that's why they are where they are.

"I don't think they need to change anything. But make sure the losses don't affect them. Leeds everyone's laughing and saying 'they are falling apart'.

"I think they need to show character and make sure what has taken them to second place, they carry one doing it and making sure they stay in there."

The wheels have come off Leeds' season since they drew with Cardiff in December
With just 13 games to go, the Bluebirds are also very much within the race to cause a stir at the top end of the table.

City sit just outside the top six, just three points outside the play-offs, having enjoyed a tremendous run of results of late.

They are undefeated in their last seven Championship matches and, heading into this weekend's encounter with Stoke City, will certainly be brimming with confidence and eyeing those teams above them.

Ralls from the start?

Joe has got a big heart as we know. But he is desperate to be back in the group. He’s a fit lad and a warrior but you need time. In my time here Joe has had very limited time on the grass. He’s an important part of the squad and it’s a real plus for us

Contract up at the end of the year?

NEIL HARRIS:

Yeah, we have a couple of players out of contract, Jazz is one. Jazz needs to focus on continuing his run of games. Performances take care of themselves with football, with contracts with Cardiff or another club or international ambitions in the summer.

Joe Bennett situation?

NEIL HARRIS:

"Heat of the moment at the time, I was quite disappointed with the referee’s performance. Everyone made a big deal of it, but he had played three games in a week. Sometimes you have to take good players off. Joe came off, protection, whatever way you want to put it. Jazz on at left-back, Leo at right-back, was the right call at the right time."

Re: BREAKING NEIL HARRIS:

Nelson benefited next to Sean Morrison?

NEIL HARRIS:

"It’s combinations, centre-halves, centre midfield, striking partnerships, goalkeeper and centre backs, wing backs and wingers.

Curtis is still learning the game and learning how to play at this level. He is a great learner.

He is always asking questions, always asking for video analysis, always in the gym, wants to be better all the time.

He’s always last on the training pitch. Him and Mozza have been a good combination. Mozza’s experience, leadership and voice at key moments and Nelson is adapting all the time. The turn of pace he’s got is really impressive. I’ve said to Sol before that Nels is, in some ways, like Sol, just with that yard of pace and getting those long legs out to stop shots.

They’ve been a productive centre-half pairing. The challenge is for them to stay there and for Aden and Sol to force their way back in."

Re: BREAKING NEIL HARRIS:

Thu Feb 20, 2020 3:48 pm

Nelson been more vocal, flourishing confidence-wise?

NEIL HARRIS:

"Yeah, it’s another demand of mine. I like personalities, I like people to have a voice and an opinion at the right time.

I like leadership, I embrace that. I say to the boys that not everyone can talk continuously, not everyone can be a Marlon Pack, for example, who can commentate through a game and play it.

Every bit of information you give is a bonus to everyone else. Players are just coming out of their shell a little bit and that’s important."

It worries me to be honest.

To rely on any way on Jazz Richards is desperate in the extreme.

An average player who has had some ok performances since he came back and a couple of real shockers.

For me, nowhere near good enough for a promotion push and never far from another visit to the treatment room.

Jazz Richards: Cardiff City defender's performances please boss Neil Harris

By Chris Wathan BBC Sport

Thursday 20th February 2020

Jazz Richards joined Cardiff City from Fulham on a three-year deal in July 2016

Cardiff boss Neil Harris has told defender Jazz Richards to keep up his "outstanding" form if he wants a Wales recall.

Richards was part of Chris Coleman's Euro 2016 squad but has not featured under Ryan Giggs.

After big injury problems, the 28-year-old has impressed under Harris.

"Jazz has enough experience to know that all he can do for himself, looking at the national team, is take care of his own performances ," Harris said.

"At the moment he's doing that."

As well as the target of pushing for a Euro 2020 place, Richards also sees his Cardiff contract expire at the end of the season.

The 14-cap international has started the last six games for the Bluebirds, his best run in the side in three years following a succession of fitness problems.

Jazz Richards made one substitute's appearance at Euro 2016

"We can all see Jazz's ability, I've known it over the years as an opposing manager," Harris said.

"We've been really pleased with his performances. We have to be really careful not to push him too hard, and be patient with him, but he's now in a position where he just wants to play football and wants to play every day because he's missed so much through his career.

"He'll be looking at it and saying I'm playing a run of games in the Championship in a side that's doing well and his own form is outstanding.

"Jazz needs to focus on just continuing his run of games. He's experienced enough to know performances take care of themselves with football, whether that's with contracts with Cardiff or another club or international ambitions in the summer."

Richards is expected to feature in this weekend's trip to Stoke, with Harris keen to maintain recent momentum towards the top-six.

"It's our aim - you have to challenge players," he said. "The players here expect a play-off push and to challenge.

"Three or four weeks ago we were thinking 'possibly' but really looking at next season - now we're not a million miles away and we want to push.

"Let's embrace the play-off challenge. While it's there for us let's keep pushing."

Midfielder Joe Ralls is contention for the game at Stoke having missed the last six matches with a glute muscle problem.
