Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan turns down two separate takeover bids for Bluebirds

By Paul Abbandonato

Tuesday 18th February 2020

Tan has underlined his commitment to Cardiff City by rejecting takeover moves during past 12 months, it has been revealed. He didn't feel either offer was right for Wales' capital city club

Vincent Tan has rejected two takeover attempts

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan has turned down two different approaches to buy the club in recent months, it can be revealed.

The takeover attempts came from interested parties from abroad and are understood to have been made within the last year.

Tan, we are told, rejected the overtures because he didn't feel either was in the best interests of Wales' capital city club.

He is said to remain fully focused upon, and committed to, the Bluebirds and is keen to see manager Neil Harris lead a Championship top six charge in the closing months of the season.

Cardiff have not played particularly well for the vast majority of the campaign, yet are somehow still only one win away from the play-off positions. With Josh Murphy, Callum Paterson and Lee Tomlin scoring goals, and Albert Adomah having joined, Tan feels the Bluebirds can move up another gear and have a brilliant ending to the campaign.

Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman revealed news of the attempted takeover moves at a fans' Q&A session.

"I discussed each of them with Vincent. He didn't want to go," said Dalman.

The sum of money being put forward in each case isn't being disclosed, but Dalman and Tan rebuffed them anyway and have instead set sights on a third promotion to the Premier League during their reign.

However, if Cardiff don't go up in May the Bluebirds are likely to prune the purse strings as the reality of football economics hits home in the Championship.

Dalman & Ken Choo have both said the budget will be tightened even more next season.

Only a couple of weeks ago I actually asked Paul if he was working for Tan

??

I put this out nearly a year ago.

I was told two bids £35mill & £50mill

One from America and one from a company who Tan does not like.

I also heard the £50mill one pulled out.

If the right offer came in that suited Tan, he would rip their hand off and who would blame him on that :thumbright:

Cardiff City like anything else for sale is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it.

Looks like it’s a double edged sword for us..... on the one side it’s great Tan won’t just offload us to anyone if it doesn’t benefit the club yet on the other side we’re not going to see many (if any) new faces joining during the summer, it will be offloads and new loans

And as most of us realise the best chance of him getting what he wants is by getting the city back in the prem.

Wez, I tend to agree 'better the devil you know' but there's more to this than meets the eye and the trustworthy info I have is that an offer was accepted at one stage; only to be rebuffed when certain identities involved came to light

I believe Vincent Tan will sell when it suits him and at the right price. I believe that time is not too far away and this summer will see cuts to the budget that will see us effectively debt-free but not majorly active in the transfer market in financial terms

Neil Harris is apparently aware of this and it is one reason (a) he got the job, and (b) a certain other major name didn't ;)

Sam hammam wants back in and I hope he gets no where near the club

Happy for tan to continue but was hoping for a boost in the summer as regards new signings and some investment in the team even if only to keep the attendances up, and season ticket sales, and it would not be fair on harris if he had no funds, unless of course he new all along there would not be anything forthcoming.

Mark Hughes as manager and Bells assistant got interviewed but of course wanted money to buy players , so in my opinion that’s why they did not get the jobs.

Qatar Airlines who are owners of PSG Paris are apparently looking for a British club and with links to Cardiff Airport they would certainly have the money. After all we are a Capital City and have already the 16th biggest Stadium in the League which we fill when in the Premier League! Tan should arrange a meeting?

Best owner we have ever had and is proving it again by keeping us safe from owners who were not right for this club. He may well leave but if he sells it will be to the right person.
Another thing to be thankful for and Vincent keeping to his word.

Tan or Swansea's owners?

Tan every day of the week, he is an excellent football club owner, and has bailed us out constantly!

That would kick up all sorts if other issues.

The PSG owners would ot be able to have more than a 49% stake in Cardiff under UEFA rules as you cannot directly own two clubs who could meet.
If they did and we somehow qualified for Europe they would have to decide which club enters and which forfeits.

Efl and premier league rules for the fit and proper persons test would also forbid it as you cant have more than a 30% stake in another EUFA club and pass the test

Funny I was told a completely different story back a year ago. And it’s 100 miles apart from what’s being reported on here.
If it’s true the offer was certainly one Tan would have taken if he genuinely wanted to sell. The first thing I knew about a second bid was at the Q&A the other night with Memett.
If you listened to the interview with Dave Wheelans grandson who took over from him at Wigan then any championship club will do well to line there ducks up financially. I think there are 7/8 clubs in the championship who have rolled the dice and there is no way back for them. This summer is going to be an interesting one when it comes to spending.
Annis for the record if you remember I mentioned the take over offer to you when we met up last May in Majorca.

Hi Mark,

I remember you did :thumbright:

But I also know 100% who the one bid was from.

On the other bid I have been told the other party withdrew the bid.

Are you coming over this year ?

If so make it when Atletico Baleares are playing home :thumbright: :bluescarf:

Re: Tan turned down 2 takeovers in the last year

I'm quite torn on this.

Firstly I don't buy this nonsense about him only wanting to sell to the right person - I'm sure if the right financial offer came along he'd sell to anyone who he doesn't have a personal problem with (that means you Mr Hammam  )

I don't think that with Tan in charge we'll ever see anybody at the club with enough football knowledge to make real progress and I doubt we'll ever see the level of investment in the management and playing side of the club needed to establish the club in the Premier League.

On the other hand there is no doubt that we have had more success during Tan's ownership than at any other time during the 50 odd years I have followed City and there is no doubt that many many clubs have owners who are much worse - we've had plenty of those over the years.

So I can certainly see the argument for better the devil you know but it will probably mean limited progress on the field for the foreseeable future.

Would Love to come over before the season ends or start of next season for the footie.

More than Happy for Tan to stay in control of the club. Certainly trust him more than any other owner we have had.

I’m surprised Tan doesn’t know of a wealthy Chinese investor in the circles he moves in, Malaysia is also made up of half Chinese population. I’m glad he’s not going to just flog us off to any old hedge fund etc....
