NEIL HARRIS:

Will we spend money in the summer?

NEIL HARRIS:

"That’ll be down to the board in the summer but I will put my requirements for the summer in April to see where we are at."

"I was aware, when i came here, the finances were not available and I wasn’t going to be able to spend millions in January."

Harris

Youth Played their way in?

"In the bigger reaches of the squad, yes. They’ve been training with us on and off, with Sam Bowen, Taz, Cam Coxe, Mark Harris, those lads in particular are in and around the first-team group. It’s not about them being in the squad every week, but at the right times and opportunity for them when they train with the first team."

Draws into wins?

NEIL HARRIS:

"That’s the key question. Not many defeats during my time here but too many draws. It’s fine not being easy to beat and to bounce back from QPR, but we need to get that consistency. We’re not always putting it together. West Brom is about as good as it could be. That’s why we have added to the squad. Just asking for a little bit more from the players and some consistency. Ultimately, winning games comes down to momentum."

Play-offs are on?

NEIL HARRIS:

"Definitely. That’s the clear message to the players. It’s about finding that consistent level of performance. It’s about winning games of football. It’s about delivering and a run of wins will push us into the top six. We are always close, almost there, but three games in a week gives you that opportunity to close the gap."

Harris

Joe Ralls?

Neil Harris:

"Not this weekend, the glute. You don’t really get glute injuries. I’m desperate to work with him and see him on the pitch. He won’t be available for Saturday or maybe next Wednesday. Another two and a half weeks missed, so it’s frustrating for Joe."

NEIL HARRIS:

Not playing Reading!

Quite bizarre, that. Three times. The majority of it we were better than three draws and they beat us on penalties. On the whole we are disappointed with that. I’ve chosen not to focus on the disappointment, but the plusses of the night. Some really strong performances, particularly from Josh Murphy, that’s the performance I’ve been waiting to see, and the fans. Then the young players, to see Joel Bagan play so well for 80 minutes before coming off with cramp. Then Sangy as well. A big night for the club and the supporters and the academy staff.

NEIL HARRIS:

What did the players say when you asked for more?

"You have to show them and help them. Let’s demand more of each other. You have to build a group over a period of time. Mentality and physically build them. Every game is a tough challenge and is difficult, however the demand of the players is that this is a big period for us over the next week. The next three games. The biggest week since I’ve been in charge."

NEIL HARRIS:

Not doom and gloom?

I think supporters hang on every word and want to be enthused and know where the club is going. I understand that.

But the message was not a doom and gloom message.

I think, like I said, the owner has notoriously backed the club. We enquired about players and made bids for players. But we were never going to overspend

NATHAN BLAKE:

“In the summer, I would be looking to really cut this squad, even if it meant giving golden handshakes. That’s easy for me to say, of course, it’s not my money. But I just look at two of my old teams, Wolves and Sheffield United, and look at what they are achieving.”

“ They are proof that if you have the capability, the will and the correct plan in place then you can elevate your club very quickly. At the moment, we are sitting in 12th position in the Championship table and the mid-season transfer window has already come and gone.”

Two strikers, two goals the other night - inform selection?

NEIL HARRIS:

"What’s Lee Tomlin? Lee Tomlin for me is a goalscorer and a creator. Junior Hoilett, is he a winger or a playmaker? Mendez is a big loss for us because he is that high, attacking wide player, but you look at ways of scoring goals. We’ve gone 4-4-2 at times and it’s different personnel at times. Lee Tomlin has been a big catalyst during my time here. Danny Ward has scored a couple, Glatz has, Paterson in great form too. A lot of linking to strikers in the transfer window, but we need to score goals, I know we need to improve that."

Players brought in, ready to play?

NEIL HARRIS:

"Brad Smith is the one that’s not played as much football as everyone else, so he might need a bit of time to get up to speed. Albert has been involved in every Championship game for Forest and Dion is a fit young lad. Albert brings a goalscoring knack. They are fit lads and training has gone through the roof."

Chairman and chief exec - tight financial constraints?

NEIL HARRIS:

"I was aware, when i came here, the finances were not available and I wasn’t going to be able to spend millions in January."

"I think realistically we have cut the squad and rebuild before the end of the season. It’s looking at rebuilding the group and going again next season."

"They want to bring down the average age of the squad and give opportunities to the young lads coming through. I want to win and be in the top six. The club has had some nice success over the last seven or eight years."

"I want to push the top end of the Championship to get back into the Premier League. It’s about on the pitch and on the pitch, building for the future. Our fans want to see XI homegrown players. Trying to get players to come through and show the passion like the other night."

Bodies out in the summer?

NEIL HARRIS:

Not got that far yet. Just getting overJanuary. I was really happy with the squad.

I was really happy with the squad before Friday and really happy now.

Form is temporary and class is permanent.

Getting the best on individuals.

Come the summer there will be a turnover for players, I’m sure, as there is with every club

In a position to compete next season?

NEIL HARRIS:

I hope so. That’s why I’m here. I want to compete.

The owner has backed managers in the past and I hope that continues.

There are cycles in football, maybe the group needs adjusting at times. You need to adapt over a period of time. Ultimately, we’ve got a good core of players.

Will we spend money in the summer? That’ll be down to the board in the summer but I will put my requirements for the summer in April to see where we are at.

Whoever are the highest earners currently, expect to be replaced.

The early Luton Town vs Cardiff City team news as Bluebirds star still ruled out and new signing a doubt

The Bluebirds face a trip to Luton this afternoon to face the Championship's bottom side and there will likely be a new face or two for the visitors

Cardiff City will once again be without Joe Ralls for this afternoon's trip to Kenilworth Road, while one of their January signings is also a doubt.

Ralls has endured a torrid few months with injury, starting just one game since Neil Harris took over back in November.

He has suffered a broken hand, which sidelined him after the Leeds game in December, and his most recent issue, a problem with his glute muscle, has kept him out of the last couple of matches.

Neil Harris said on Thursday the midfielder will not be involved this weekend, with the home clash with Wigan at the end of next week the most likely return date.

In more positive news, the City boss said all three new signings, Brad Smith, Dion Sanderson and Albert Adomah, are available for selection this weekend.

None of them were eligible for the FA Cup fourth round replay match with Reading this week, owing to the fact they were not Cardiff City players at the time of the first leg.

But while all three are available, Harris curbed expectations when it came to the left back Smith.

"Brad Smith is the one who has not played as much football as everybody else," Harris said in the build-up to this match.

"He's the one who might need a little bit of time to get up to speed."

Cardiff City left back Brad Smith (Image: Cardiff City)
However, he was far more positive when speaking about his other two signings.

"Albert, as we know, has been involved in every Championship game for Forest this season," the manager added.

"Dion is a naturally fit young lad.

"Albert is a little bit older and brings the knowledge, experience and goalscoring knack from a wide area. He is also a very fit lad as well.

"The other two, Brad and Dion, are modern-day full backs that go up and down, are quick and direct.

"They are fit lads and they have gone energy and training has gone through the roof with the three of them in.

"All three are fit. Are they quite ready for match-day starting? We will find out at three o'clock on Saturday."

Elsewhere, we could likely see Josh Murphy retain his spot on the left wing after his stellar display against Reading on Tuesday night.

The 24-year-old scored twice and appeared to be brimming with confidence, which could very well see him displace Junior Hoilett, who started the last Championship match.

The centre backs will likely swap over from the FA Cup defeat, with Sean Morrison and Curtis Nelson replacing Sol Bamba and Aden Flint, while it remains to be seen whether Neil Etheridge will be ousted for Alex Smithies.

Callum Paterson's goalscoring form is difficult to ignore and, with Danny Ward having more of an impact off the bench this season, it seems a straight shootout between the Scot and Robert Glatzel up front.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Matthew Connolly, Isaac Vassell and Greg Cunningham are the long-term absentees.
