About Reading

Reading Football Club is a professional association football club based in Reading, Berkshire, England. The team play in the Championship, the second tier of English football. The current manager is Mark Bowen.

Reading are nicknamed The Royals, due to Reading's location in the Royal County of Berkshire, though they were previously known as The Biscuitmen, due to the town's association with Huntley and Palmers. Established in 1871, the club is one of the oldest teams in England, but did not join The Football League until 1920, and first in the top tier of English football league system in the 2006–07 season. The club competed in the 2012–13 Premier League season, having gained promotion at the end of the 2011–12 season after winning the Championship, but were relegated after just one season back in the top flight.

The club played at Elm Park for 102 years between 1896 and 1998. In 1998 the club moved to the new Madejski Stadium, which is named after the club's former co-chairman Sir John Madejski.

The club holds the record for the number of successive league wins at the start of a season, with a total of 13 wins at the start of the 1985–86 Third Division campaign and also the record for the number of points gained in the professional league season with 106 points in the 2005–06 Football League Championship campaign. Reading then finished eighth in the 2006–07 Premier League, their first ever season as a top flight club.

During the 2014–15 FA Cup, the club reached the semi finals, reaching the quarter finals the season after. They also reached the championship playoff final in the 2016–17 EFL Championship season.

Neil Harris | The FA Cup can build belief & momentum

Monday 3rd January 2020

Cardiff City renew acquaintances with Reading for the third time in ten days this Tuesday evening, hosting an Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round replay with the Royals.

It’s a competition that the Bluebirds and Neil Harris have enjoyed, having both competed in the Final since the turn of the millennium. Indeed, the City boss made his fondness for the Cup clear as he eyed a spot in the Fifth Round.

NEIL HARRIS:

“It’s an FA Cup replay under the floodlights – a great occasion, We have to enjoy these occasions and, as ever, we really want to win this game. I look to win every game, the FA cup is special to me.”

“We want to be at home to Sheffield United in the Fifth Round, a team in the top six in the Premier League at the moment. We’ll have to put in a very strong performance against Reading on Tuesday evening to be there. “

“The FA Cup is a competition with great history and one which I and this Football Club have been fond of. Winning games and getting through builds momentum and belief within the group.”

The Bluebirds’ three January recruits, Brad Smith, Dion Sanderson and Albert Adomah are ineligible for Tuesday night’s replay as they weren’t City players at the time of the initial match.

Nevertheless, the tie will give several members of the Bluebirds’ squad another chance to impress, as Harris explained: “We’ve had a huge amount of games in the last eight to ten weeks and such a busy month in January.

“It’s important for us to look at players, giving match minutes and letting some come into the group, with the chance to stake a claim and do well.

“There will certainly be some changes to the team to give people that opportunity and there may be a chance for a few younger lads to be involved.”

Finally, Harris looked back at our two recent clashes with Mark Bowen’s men – and the victory over West Brom sandwiched between them – as he looked forward to stepping out under the CCS lights once again.

“I think we did enough in our last two games with Reading to come out victorious but just fell short of that end product,” he said. “In the first FA Cup game in particular, we were very creative and should have scored goals.

“Our win over West Brom was a really thunderous Championship encounter, played at 100 miles an hour. But we lacked a bit of energy in the first half of our Championship clash with Reading.

“After the break we got into really good areas, played with real intensity and determination. That little spark in the final third is the hardest thing to create in football and we’ll keep working tirelessly on the training pitch to give players the confidence and ability to do that.

“I’m sure Tuesday’s game will be completely different to the last two. We have to make sure again that we’re as good as we can be on the evening and give ourselves a real opportunity to progress to the Fifth Round.”

It’s weird how Cardiff have never had any real sort of rivalry with Reading, but over the course of two games in close succession and a third tonight, a lot of spite has built up, on and off the pitch. How quickly they became the best of enemies

I remember them playing Barry town once at Jenner park .it went off quite bad in the road behind the stadium.

Sean Morrison who had staples in his head during the Reading League game last Friday should be ok for Luton away this Saturday.
Harris asked Morrison to come off the pitch, but Morrison insisted he wanted to stay on.

Harris was going to put Sean Morrison in the squad for tonight’s Cup game, but is waiting till the last moment and see how Morrison feels.

Some lovely defensive work by Bagan starts a counter-attack down the left. It eventually works its way inside to Josh Murphy, whose left-footed striker is just over Sam Walker’s bar. Nice work from Cardiff, that.

More excellent work down the left, this time from Murphy. He zips down the edge of the box and fizzes a cross towards goal, but Walker collects.

Really, really nice stuff this from Cardiff. They look slick in their passing and are zipping it around the midfield. Richards and Bagan willing recipients at wing back, too. Vaulks and Pack spraying it about well.

This Bagan/Murphy axis on the left looks quick and busy. They appear to have a lovely understanding already. Bagan’s slipped through ball is just too long and it runs out for a goal kick.

Brilliant from City. Richards inside to Glatzel, Glatzel pops it off to Murphy, who goes for the reverse pass to Richards, but it trickles through to the keeper. Very encouraging early signs.
