Did Warnock hold a grudge ?

Thu Jan 30, 2020 5:08 pm

I was just wondering, why Smithies,Nelson,Vaulks and Tomlin were never picked regularly by Neil Warnock.
Did he hold grudges against these players and others ?
I'm sure judging by the form of these players of late , we would be a few points better off.
If we had used them more.

I think he just didn’t fancy them...Bobby Reid suffered with not being a good run in the side.
Every manager has to have his preferences and these guys weren’t Warlocks ....the positive ...they have been hungry to prove him wrong.
And tbf to Warnock, Tomlin was so out of shape last season he wasn’t ready to be picked .

No grudges. I dont think Tomlin is his type of player. He likes hard working physical players. For example he would play Patterson ahead of him as a 10.

With Nelson, he needed to justify paying so much money for Flint and he was never going to drop Morrison who had been his leader for 3 years.

We signed Pack right at the end, on transfers window day. I just think he preferred him to Vaulks.

I think it highlights he spent way to much money on players that didn't really improve what he already had.

Remember Warnock signed all these players, so if they didn’t suit him or his style of play, why the hell did he sign them in the first place. He knew what sort of players they are and their style of play.

you can only pick 11. and if those 4 had been starters you or someone else would be asking the same question but with 4 different players names.

I think we did ask the FA if we could play the whole 30 man squad every week but they said no

I think that's pretty pathetic and (just in case) a very bad joke, just in case you claim it to be one...

Neil Warnock brought the players in because he believed they might make a difference and enhance his squad. That it didn't happen with some is what (in part at least) cost him an early departure from this club when his ambition for the season was to get another club (ours) promoted to further enhance his managerial status

Far too many on here have forgotten what the man did for our club and have turned like worms as soon as he has left

We know he make mistakes...and he admitted to many of them. But for me (and I feel most other real City supporters) the guy performed a near miracle in less than 18 months and then almost succeeded in keeping us at the top table

agree
his biggest mistake...was winning promotion.
had he just got us clear of the relegation zone that 1st year which would have been achievement in itself . and followed that with a just missing out on play offs season expectations and then disappointments would be less . I still cant get my head around the expectancy here after losing so many players and having to replace them..
as for the whole grudge idea ? you don't have to like them to pick them. but one things for sure you don't get to win all those games and promotions by being small minded, petty and tbh behaving like some of our fans have.

My thoughts on Warnock's transfer dealings are well known, and I stand by them.

But to be fair, it's up to the manager what players he uses. Some players react better to different managers as well.

Players who haven't played regularly often get a fresh start when a new manager comes, and a lot of the time these players up their game.

Weird though, he bought them all, then didn’t use them. He did perform miracles, be ironic if they all came good.

Warnock has always had his favourites and he often bought them back when he changed clubs, he just liked certain players and was very loyal, to shift any of them you had to be outstanding in training and prove you were better!

He definitely had his favourites who seemed would play regardless of their form or fitness and his reluctance/stubbornness to change his selection cost him his job in the end. The day we signed Flint people raised concerns with the lack of pace at the back yet Warnock stuck with it when it clearly was not working - Nelson starts and we look better at the back straight away. He rushed patterson back into the team who was well off the pace with his fitness which was pretty clear to everyone. Refused to play Tomlin as he was not fit enough to play 90mins (apparently) yet remarkably found fitness within a week of Harris arriving - how many points has he won us since? Warnock deserves a lot of credit but he was his own worst enemy at times.
