HISTORIC BLUEBIRDS MEMORABILIA PUT UP FOR AUCTION

Fri Jan 17, 2020 4:39 pm

Cardiff City fans call for action as thousands of pounds of historic Bluebirds memorabilia put up for auction
The decision has triggered alarm bells amongst supporters.

It is understood the memorabilia was rescued from Ninian Park before it was demolished ahead of the move to Cardiff City Stadium.

Cardiff City fans have expressed alarm after learning some of the most important items in the club's rich history are to be sold off next week.

The memorabilia, which features things as wide ranging as unique 1927 FA Cup Final mementos through to contractual details of John Toshack's move from Cardiff to Liverpool, are being put up for sale at an East Anglian auction house.

Bluebirds fans have outlined their concerns items from down the decades, which are enshrined in Welsh football history, could be separated off and sold to individual buyers.

They are calling for the Bluebirds to buy back the collection and preserve the precious asset within the club.

Failing that, Cardiff supporters feel the authorities should step in, with Cardiff Council, the National Museum or the National Library of Wales other options for the collection.

The items for sale are highly relevant to association football in Wales, they say, and must be retained here as part of the proud history of not just the Bluebirds, but also Wales' capital city.

Cardiff City have confirmed they will look into the matter, but point out a private collector owns the items.

It is understood the memorabilia was rescued from Ninian Park before the ground was demolished ahead of the club's move to Cardiff City Stadium.

However, the decision to put it up for auction has raised alarm bells amongst supporters who want the Bluebirds to intervene as a matter of urgency.

One Cardiff fan said: "It would be scandalous if this collection was sold off to dealers and flogged across the country."

The most valuable and unique item appears to be bound volumes of the minutes of Cardiff City Board meetings from 1915 to 1972, many of them in copperplate writing.

The minutes record the history of the club, detailing what the directors had to say and decided to do about an array of issues including transfer fees, hooliganism in the 1960s and player misbehaviour.

The auctioneers are advertising those boardroom notes as "A truly unique piece of club history being the original Directors Minute Ledgers, Weekly Payment Records, Wages Books, Share Register, etc. Must be viewed (approx 35 volumes) Heavy."

There are plenty of other unique items as well, including Mayoral invites to functions at City Hall following FA Cup final appearances, which are signed by the players, newspaper cuttings, tickets and 39 volumes of programmes.

Documents recording original player contracts are also up for sale, including the paperwork that secured the services of John Charles, the greatest football in Welsh football history, to Cardiff City.

Another lot is the original Ninian Park lease, which was for 30 years at £175 per anumn.

Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust Board Member Tim Hartley said: “It would be disastrous if this unique memorabilia, such as the board minutes and contract documents, were lost not just to the football club, but the capital city and Wales as well.

"These historical items must not be allowed to be sold off to dealers across the UK.

“We believe the club and public bodies need to step in as a matter of urgency to ensure the preservation of these items for future generations. They would undoubtedly be the centrepiece of a Cardiff City museum in future.

"Time is very short to prevent the loss of these unique items.”

It would be a massive shame to lose any/all of these items

The club and/or some 'local' interest should seek to buy for their historic relevance to this area :thumbright:

Unfortunately an individual owns theses things and probably will want top dollar for them, and you cannot have an open cheque book at an auction unless you are tan and wants to do the right thing regarding bits of our history to stay at ccs.

Wales online state that ''The memorabilia was rescued from Ninian Park before it was demolished.''
So why didn't the Club take the items? Who is selling them? Don't understand why the Club would abandon all the Memorabilia.

Sometimes it’s up to the Dem crew(Cuddy I think) to flog whatever they can if stuff just gets left behind...or it may have been given away.

Surely if these items were 'rescued' from Ninian Park then they actually belong to the club?

Interesting! Were they obtained legally, then? :?

just a question but I agree that the club themselves should look at these items and consider bringing them 'home' :thumbright:

It say 'rescued' and the question was asked if it was done so legally? :?

The remainder of the post simply question the Who? Why? and Where? of the situation

Quote: "a private collector" doesn't really answer the question of legality and it has been known for such auctions to end up costing the seller when the nature of their haul becomes apparent

Not saying this is the case here; but no harm in asking ;)

yes it does say rescued...but it is WOL also.
im 99% certain they had not been in NP for 20/30 years.. and belong to someone you would associate with the clubs history...who seems to want to remain nameless ?
I do not know but would imagine these items would have been offered to the club before deciding to auction them..

I’d have bid for some of that stuff

But if it’s back in the club then that’s good news; maybe they should let the fans have a gander at it - open a gallery in one of the many empty rooms in the stadium to exhibit.

Lockdales website this morning state the auction will be going ahead as normal this weekend, including the Cardiff City memorabilia. "Contrary to rumours". I wonder what is happening with the club, maybe they have to sell Will Vaulks first!!

This all seems a bit of a publicity stunt by the people putting it up for auction as the only people willing to bid more than its worth will inevitably be the club or someone who supports the City.

possibly your correct ...the ledgers of directors meetings from 1915 to 1972 should 100% be at the club. not sure who else might bid on them
