CARDIFF CITY REJECT WEST HAM’S £7M NEIL ETHERIDGE OFFER
BY AlexTurk

Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge has today emerged as a January transfer target for West Ham United, but there’s already been one setback.

According to Claret & Hugh, a club source has confirmed the £7million bid was swiftly turned down by the Championship club.

The report adds that West Ham are still waiting on the results of Darren Randolph’s second medical ahead of a £4million move from Middlesbrough, but his injury is a worry.

The 32-year-old hasn’t featured for Boro since November through a thigh injury, which made the Hammers’ pursuit rather confusing in the first place.

I think many wouldn’t have thought West Ham would go for an injured goalkeeper to provide cover for… injury-prone goalkeepers.

£4m provides good value considering Randolph was sold for £5million two years ago, but in our view, there are probably better options out there.

It isn’t known whether West Ham will go back in for Etheridge after being unsuccessful with their £7m offer, but I think David Moyes needs reliable options in between the sticks.

Although the club looks to be waiting on the results of Randolph’s second medical, we believe a new goalkeeper needs to be acquired as soon as possible.

West Ham are lingering far too close to the relegation zone and this season’s goalkeeper bedlam has contributed to that massively.

If this is true then our board is stupid. I'd snap there hands off and put the money into a striker and midfielder this january

£7mill is a pretty good offer to be fair, if correct. Great if the club holding out gets us a bit more cash but this could backfire and we end not selling him. That money could be vital if we want to strengthen this window.

Why are we assuming it'll be reinvested

We don’t know the actual amount or the terms to review this properly. Clearly if it was £7m upfront then that’s not bad but there could be all sorts of conditions that make an offer far less attractive

Villa just got Pepe Reina on loan to cover injury. No big capital outlay. If we think Etheridge is worth £10million we are absolutely deluded. And makes sense of what planet you have to be done to pay £6 million for Flint.

Surprised we didn't accept to be honest. Would be lucky to get £5m if we sell him in the summer.

If we had plenty of money to splash about on improving the team, I would keep Etheridge as I'm sure he has a great future. However, as it seems clear that no, or little money is available and we still have Smithies, we have no choice other than to sell. Take the money now and let's get some fresh faces in the team.

It has been said that players must go before players can come in. I would imagine a decent sale of any player, Etheridge in this case, would mean we would see 1 or 2 come in.

Absolutely right. The problem is our board or the transfer committee part of it does appear to be stupid given some of the signings we have made and if they are willing to spend £2.3 million on Kieffer Moore. Everyone but our board appears to know Smithies is just as good a keeper, possibly better, and we have back up for him. I would happily accept £7 million even if it was dependent on West Ham staying up which they probably will. If the board mucks this one up there will be serious questions asked as to their competence.

Etheridge is probably the only player going to command a decent fee so I would be surprised if we turned down a 7m offer.
We have an average back up in Smithies and maybe Day will improve in time so there's no sporting reason.
Whether the money would be re invested is the big question. I'm guessing very little of it.

Isn't that what the whole deal is worth? But club be daft to turn anything over 7m in total?
A player is only worth what someone is willing to pay for them.

Exactly Allen, always find it amazing where some folk pick these millions of £££ s out of thin air

Personally I would take £5/£6m if it upfront and given straight to Harris, not like the Marshall fiasco where we allegedly lost a few million.

Jules I'm not sure how much of this story is true? Either city rejected an offer so wham went for randolf! because they only offered 4m for randolf seems unlikely that wham would offer 7m for what I would say are two equally good keepers .

Agreed.

More importantly, Etheridge appears to be quite keen on a Premiership move even as a back-up (see his interview in the summer) therefore it's likely his head has been turned and therefore for £5m+ we should let him go.

Smithies is an excellent keeper and we are lucky to still have him. His distribution was a big improvement on Sunday but so was his early save from Routledge even though it was called offside.

Sometimes a sale is best for all parties and this one appears to be one of those.

It's a no brainer. Accept this offer, take the money + invest in the squad immediately.
