FORMER DEFENDER: I WANT TO SEE PREMIER LEAGUE WELSH 'DERBY'

Steven Caulker wants to see Cardiff City v Swansea City back in Premier League
By Laura Kenyon

Former Swansea and Cardiff City defender Steven Caulker hopes the south Wales derby will be back in the Premier League in 2020-21.

Caulker scored the winner in Cardiff's 1-0 win over Swansea in 2013 - their first derby in the English top flight.

"It's a memory that I look back on and I'm proud of to be honest with you," said Caulker

"I had many games for both sides, but to play in the first derby in the Premier League was a proud moment."

Caulker joined Swansea City on a season-long loan in 2011, before returning to Tottenham Hotspur.

He scored on his only England appearance, a 4-2 defeat by Sweden in November 2012, and played for Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics.

In 2013, he signed for the Bluebirds in an £8m deal and went on to earn his entry in south Wales derby history.

"It was amazing to be a part of and to get the winning goal was the icing on the cake," said Caulker.

"It was good moment and one I still look back on now as one of my finer Premier League moments.

"I've got equal love for both clubs, but I understand there are a few Swansea fans out there who aren't my biggest of fans."

The 28-year-old says it is a shame to see two of his former sides in the Championship.

"I'd love to see another south Wales derby in the Premier League.

"There's no reason why it can't happen for Swansea and Cardiff this year.

"They're going to have to have a strong push this next four to five months but that's definitely where both clubs should be.

"South Wales is so passionate about football it's a shame to see them outside the Premier League and I'd like to think both managers can guide them back this year."

Caulker, who also spent time at Liverpool and QPR, says the derby has a special feel.

"What shone through to me was the atmosphere was so different," he said

"Everyone around the city would say to me we just can't lose to them, winning is a bonus, but we just can't lose to them because they've got to go into their jobs the following day with the Swansea or Cardiff fans, whoever they may be.

"I did definitely feel it was special."

Waited 7 years ? You're not a football fan are you? You're one of those that enrolled when the knitting site finished

Yes, and when we did 'get there', your lot cleared off pretty promptly, didn't they?

Odd that, eh? :?

Coincidence or not; that is the question...?

And you're certainly not waiting there for us now, are you? ;) :laughing6:

Watching Cardiff play is just about as interesting as knitting.

"Yes, and when we did "get there". It's staying there is the bit your lot didn't understand, it means you have to win games, not just sit at the bottom waiting for the trap door to open and put you back where you belong 9 months later.Happened to you on both occasions I believe.

??? What just is the question, whatever it is you obviously didn't have the answers.

Don't be like your 'oppo' and avoid the crux of the post. You stated (quote) "you waited 7 years for you lot (us) to get up" with your lot giving it large the whole time on here; yet (coincidence or not) you weren't there when we got there...an irrefutable FACT!

So how is that our fault when it was your lot that capitulated and contracted as your (granted lengthy) stay in the top flight came to an end because your old and new owners started asset stripping when they realised the miracles they had worked to that point were unsustainable? :?

Something our owner, for all his faults, hasn't done and doesn't appear to be doing so. He paid not only his own debts but also that of previous regimes IN FULL

Can Swansea genuinely say that? :?

I don't think so and too many Swansea-linked companies/businesses (in reluctance rather than by choice) had to bear the brunt of the meltdown that laid the foundation for your saviour, the impressive Huw ap Jenkins, to do the fantastic job that he did on the cheap and also off the backs of those the previous regime let down

Now, I am not as anti-Swansea (the football club) as one or two would have you believe but I am very anti-Jack supporter who infest another club's Forum out of historic bitterness or mere gloating or personal vendetta/frustration purposes. It is an illness when it takes up so much of your time to do so and you and your mate need to seek serious help for your obsession!

Thankfully, most of the original protagonists have gone now; mainly with their wings firmly clipped by their loud boasts that your club were 'Barcelonaesque', a 'model club' in the way it is run 'for the fans' and how you were 'in the Premier League for the long-term' (something I don't recall any of our supporters saying about our club)

In response to your daft comment under the circumstances of (quote) "sitting at the bottom waiting for the trap door to open and put you back where you belong 9 months later" I think you will recall we put up a pretty good fight and weren't too far off staying up when most observers (and many of our own supporters) wrote us off before a ball was even kicked; unlike your club who were expected to extend their stay in the Premier League for another season, despite your issues snow-balling the season before

A look at the 2017/18 and 2018/19 tables will indicate who actually did better; it might look close but let's not forget we were the less 'experienced' club and expected to go down! ;)

Just wind your neck in and concern yourself with the goings on at your own club rather than those of a rival club you are in increasing danger of looking obsessed by, if you are not already
