CARDIFF MAKE INITIAL INQURY TO RE-SIGN MIDFIELDER

Cardiff set to compete with PL club to re-sign 25 y/o midfield talent
By Ben Lang

Cardiff City have made an initial enquiry to re-sign Victor Camarasa following his successful loan spell during the club’s Premier League campaign last term, according to journalist Colin Millar.

Camarasa is currently spending the season on loan at Crystal Palace after completing another temporary switch away from parent club Real Betis over the summer, but he has been limited to just five minutes of league action so far this term.

It is thought that Camarasa now wants to leave Selhurst Park after failing to establish himself in Roy Hodgson’s plans, and Cardiff are now reportedly showing an interest in the attacking midfielder alongside Norwich City and Celta Vigo.

The 25-year-old scored five goals and registered four assists during an impressive season for Cardiff in the top-flight last term, and it now appears that the Bluebirds are keen to add Camarasa to their ranks to help boost their potential play-off bid.

Neil Harris’ side are currently sitting just four points off the Championship play-off places in 12th place, and the South Wales side will be hoping Camarasa will consider a return to the Welsh capital in order to help propel them into the top six.

The Verdict

This seems an audacious move for Cardiff to compete with Norwich and Celta Vigo for Camarasa’s signature given their Championship status, but they will be hoping the midfielder’s previous spell at the club will help them seal the signing.

Cardiff ideally need to streamline their squad ahead of the second half of the season given the number of players Harris has at his disposal, but he will not be able to turn down the possibility of brining a player of Camarasa’s quality to the club.

There can be no doubt that the Spaniard would be a top player at Championship level, but it would be interesting to see where he fits in the Cardiff side given the vast quantity of midfielders already playing for the Welsh side.

Can’t see it happening.

When stuff like this gets said it usually means we end up having a crap window and these rumours start to cover it up.

Vast quantity of midfielders??? Is he including wingers? Not that many central midfielders in our squad....and certainly not great on quality? Personally I think there's plenty of space for a central midfielder or two if they're of the right quality. Definitely space for Camarasa if we can afford his wages.

Hes never been given a chance by Palace.
He would walk into our starting 11, would be interesting to see him and Tomlin playing off each other. It could really be the missing piece that allows us to actually get the ball down and play football

agree but I could name a few dozen other players that we probably can not afford who would also fit.

I would say we could easily afford him hes not on huge wages at Betis. His reported wage is 30k a week. That's the same as multiple players in out squad.
It would be up to the player himself if he wants to drop league and wether Betis would want a loan fee

I thought it was around 30k,somebody on here a while back he was on 65k :laughing5: yeah at those wages it's not beyond us,you would think,if Smithies earns the same 30k for essentially bench warming (not his fault admittedly )but if Norwich and celta viga are interested, the real question is,who would he be most likely to choose, prem(for now) Norwich?or back home in spain with celta?or another go here? By no means a definite no,but more likely to be.would be nice to see him and Tomlin working in tandem though. :old: :bluebird:

It's not going to happen. Read on the Palace forum that VC was on £65k a week, how anyone knows that I'm amazed.

I'd be even more surprised if Smithies was on £30k a week and I'd bet he or anyone else in the squad would be on much less than that.

No chance hes on 65k pw. Betis wouldn't pay that to a player who's not near the first team. 30k is still a push. Spain don't pay big wages unless it's the big 3

He’s injury prone and wouldn’t want to drop down a level.

I'm not so sure he wouldn't drop down and he enjoyed his tome at Cardiff City; but a Premier League team offer would likely tip the balance

At this stage, I think the Board would push the boat out as a statement of (some) intent in a season that is rapidly falling apart when, in reality, we are still in with a shout with the addition of a few players

Absolutely no doubt in my mind we should go all out to get him and I think we have a good chance of succeeding too. Camarasa, Ralls and Tomlin in our midfield would tear The Championship apart. :bluescarf:

Personally I think we miss him a d Gunnar the most. Gunnar to break tbjngs up and camarasa to make things happen. We aren't getting Gunnar back but id love someone like camarasa who could potentially link things up well for us

That would depend on whether we actually pass them the ball or smash it over there heads with the long ball

And not much pace amongst them though. WBA and Leeds have pace in abundance.

If true on 65k a week, then I would be surprised if we can afford to offer half his wages. And for someone who has hardly played for 8 months.

Camarasa, Bacuna and Tomlin would tear teams apart but I’m not sure Ralls would.
That midfield trio is mouthwatering but I’m afraid Ralls just doesn’t do it for me. Of course that’s my opinion only.

i don't believe it for a minute, and to be honest this reeks of a familiar situation we've had at the club for years. "cardiff after player that fans get excited about....then the deal fails to materialise, the club then say they missed out on other targets chasing the camarasa deal" and therefor are doubtful of any signings. just a smoke screen to make us think they are trying to spend money when they don't want to.

i wont believe it until he is announced as a cardiff player.

Although the tweet does say "return" to Cardiff City which wouldn't have applied if it was his original signing.

WoL I know but a slightly different source.

Cardiff City have made contact with Victor Camarasa's representatives over a move to bring him back to the Welsh capital, according to sources in Spain.

The creative midfielder has endured a torrid time of it since joining Crystal Palace this summer, having played only five minutes of Premier League football all season.

It is understandable, then, that the player is looking to leave Selhurst Park this month, with Norwich City and Spanish club Celta Vigo reportedly among the clubs, alongside Cardiff, interested in his situation.

Spanish football expert Colin Millar believes the likelihood of Camarasa leaving Palace this month is around '90 percent', with the 25-year-old believing he is reaching a crucial juncture in his career and needing game time under his belt.

So with the Spaniard likely heading for the exit door, where is his most likely destination?

"The player has spent the past 18 months in English football and - despite the lack of minutes this season - he seems to really enjoying living there and the style of play," Millar told WalesOnline.

"Obviously, he is also much likelier to be paid more handsomely in England than in Spain. Even for Cardiff - the average Championship club will have greater financial resources than most clubs in the bottom half of La Liga.

"Celta Vigo and Alaves, who Camarasa has also represented, both carry an interest, but England remains likelier due to the player’s preference - and it is also possible that his representatives will be economically swayed towards remaining in England or Wales."

Millar, who is the editor of Football Espana and also wrote a book about Camarasa's parent club, The Frying Pan of Spain: Sevilla v Real Betis - Spain's Hottest Football Rivalry, believes he has played his last game for Betis.

That is largely owing to his wage expectations. It is thought Camarasa earns around £65,000 a week at Palace, which is more than three times what the Bluebirds would likely want to fork out.

Victor Camarasa has played only five minutes of Premier League football this term
"Of the clubs linked, Norwich will be in the best position in that sense as they are in the Premier League," Millar added.

"But there are question marks there, too. Will they want a financial outlay on a player who, whilst being on their radar, is not a priority?

"They probably accept they will likely be relegated, so short-term deals may not be their outlook.

"The player too is also more likely, theoretically, to return to a club where he has been before, such as Cardiff or Alaves.

"He knows the cities, where to live, some of the team-mates. If a Premier League club is serious about signing him, they are clear favourites, but at the moment I don’t think that is the likeliest outcome."

It is understood that Camarasa has a clause in his contract at Palace which means if he plays more than 15 Premier League games for the Eagles then a mandatory buy option is triggered, which will cost around £13m.

However, with his season-long loan deal appearing increasingly likely to be cut short this month, Palace's money appears safe.

Neil Harris needs to find a better way of managing expectations at Cardiff City

The radical overhaul Cardiff City require and the key positions which need strengthening in January transfer window
Camarasa earned the adulation of fans in South Wales for his exploits here last season and, as such, many would love to see him back at Cardiff City Stadium.

Millar explains that Cardiff made contact with the player's representatives before the January window opened and Betis were subsequently made aware of the interest from both Norwich and the Bluebirds.

Celta Vigo this week, however, contacted Betis over potentially signing the player, with the club on the brink of selling star midfielder Stanislav Lobotka to Napoli.

What it all boils down to, Millar explains, is that on a human level, Camarasa simply wants stability and to feel loved again. And, at 25, he does not want to make the wrong decision.

"Everything indicates that the player wants to weigh up all his options before making a decision," he added.

"He will not be rushed, mainly due to the struggles at Palace.

"He wants to play football, he wants to feel wanted. But with minimal upheaval. He has had five different clubs in five seasons, remember."

That all points to a feeling that Camarasa could opt for familiarity over new surroundings. A club at which he knows the guarantees of game-time are sound.

And that is the biggest hope Cardiff City fans have and a factor which gives this link a big grounding.

Victor Camarasa was adored by Bluebirds fans last season
Back in November, fans moved en masse to beg the club to bring him back in January after the player posted a cryptic tweet . But how likely is a return to the Welsh capital?

"It’s definitely a possibility," Millar replied, "although there are many variables at play and wages remain a stumbling block.

"But he was loved at Cardiff and he genuinely loved the club back - he almost certainly would have signed permanently had they stayed up.

"He provided some big moments - it’s no mean feat for a Bluebirds player to score against Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea all in the one season, along with netting the winner at Leicester.

"He may not quite be a cult hero, but there is an emotional attachment that may be factored in."
