CARDIFF CITY PLAYERS LEAVING IN JANUARY?

By Chief Sports Reporter / Media Wales

Sunday 5th January 2019

There is no money available for Neil HARR, So Harris to move a number of players out first.

Having sold three of their star turns in the last transfer window -

Bobby Reid, Bruno Manga and Kenneth Zohore - presumably the Bluebirds are ready to listen to the right offers for their better players. That's the nature of Championship football.

Josh Murphy could be one they cash in on, although whether Harris can recoup the £11m Warnock spent to land the winger from Norwich is open to question.

Some fans feel the time is right for Murphy to depart, but others are of the view his talent is desperately needed in the starting XI. He looked a cut above anyone else creatively in Saturday's cup clash with Carlisle.

Can Cardiff really afford to let a player of Murphy's undoubted talent slip through the door?

Murphy probably needs to either go this month, or preferably be told he is a kingpin of the team under Harris and a fixture for the remainder of the campaign.

Then, of course, it's down to him to deliver. At 24, he has his best years ahead of him. Technically excellent, quick and with a fearsome shot, he has the armoury to be hugely effective at this level.

But a goal return of just four from 45 Cardiff games will disappoint Murphy. Can Harris keep hold of one of his classier acts and finally coax the best out of him on a consistent basis?

Does Josh Murphy stay or go?

Omar Bogle seems likely to depart. Gary Madine could also be on his way. Whether Danny Ward also goes elsewhere for more regular football will hinge upon whether Harris can get a quality striker replacement. But it would appear more likely Ward will stay.

Full-back Jazz Richards seemed another obvious candidate to leave, but not any more. He played poorly at QPR, then again who didn't, but Harris rates the Wales defender highly and Richards can either become starting right-back, or bench cover for either flank.

The dilemmas

The centre-backs

Do Cardiff really need four centre-halves, has Aden Flint done anywhere near enough to justify the £6m Warnock decreed he was worth, why was Bruno Manga sold?

There are so many questions in this area of the team.

Fans' favourite Sol Bamba may have had a nightmare at QPR, but he was an absolute colossus at Sheffield Wednesday.

Many supporters would like to see him back in the team, renewing his successful partnership with skipper Sean Morrison on a more regular basis.

The Bluebirds previously looked a lot more solid at this level with those two at the helm. Can they still do it together?

But having spent so much on Flint, it seems unlikely Cardiff will suddenly sell him.

Morrison, on the other hand, attracted Premier League interest back in the summer. Could the Bluebirds cash in there, even though such a move would raise eyebrows?

And where does Curtis Nelson fit into this, having been arguably the Bluebirds' best performing defender this season?

Only Harris can make the call on this, but a return to basics with the proven Morrison-Bamba partnership might not be the worst thing to happen to the team right at this moment in time.

They were together again against Carlisle, that remains the option many fans would like for the Swansea game too.

Whatever, there are four players vying for two positions and something may need to give here.

Cardiff City boss Neil Harris calls for fixture reshuffle after poorly-attended FA Cup clash with Carlisle
Goalkeepers

A similar situation. Only one of Neil Etheridge, Alex Smithies or Joe Day can play, and they're previously each used to regular week in, week out football.

Harris could cash in on either Etheridge or Smithies, which would free up a squad place for highly-rated Wales under-21 goalkeeper George Ratcliffe.

He is viewed by some as potentially the best keeper Welsh football has produced since Neville Southall. Whilst Ratcliffe has been loaned out to Barry Town in the Welsh Premier League to aid his development in men's football, Cardiff have high hopes of him.

But they don't want Ryan Giggs handing Ratcliffe his senior Wales debut before he gets a senior Bluebirds bow.

As second-choice, Smithies appears to be the obvious one to move on as he seeks more regular action. A goalkeeper of his calibre deserves that. But Etheridge, previously chased by West Ham and Aston Villa, could net a higher fee.

It's a dilemma for Harris, but surely he doesn't want to be losing a goalkeeper of Etheridge's quality?

Callum Paterson

The man who could seemingly play anywhere, who made a real fist of it at number nine in the Premier League, but who hasn't been featuring in Harris' first choice XI.

Paterson clearly brings a lot to the team with his battling qualities, desire for success and refusal to take a backwards step and ability to find the back of the net, as proven against Carlisle.

The problem was Warnock, and then Harris in his first game, played Paterson at 10. Lee Tomlin is clearly a much more viable option in that playmaking and creative position and needs to stay there.

So exactly where does Paterson fit in?

I avoid Walesonline because its shit.

I'd rather not be exposed to it here. The views expressed by everyone else for free are far more interesting.

Article full of shit but my favourite bit

Whether we sold Reid is a debatable point but he also doesn't know why we sold Manga, the reasons for which were well publicised at the time by Warnock

In his defence, he couldn’t have possibly known that. He’s Chief Sports Reporter for MediaWales.

indeed, its about the only thing he gets right in the article...presumably it means we will listen to offers .. clearly paid no attention to what NW said about him and his agent.. or Manga desperately wanting to go back to France while being begged to see out his contract.

Beyond the condescending lack of respect for the opinions of others again, (a forum remember) there’s no money to spend yet Warnock spent 60 million on this team which was not good enough to save his job, I think that makes many a bluebird angry and frustrated. Make one of the highest earners at the club reserve keeper, pay a large fee to add more slowness to an already slow defence , I could go on, there’s so much, look, you don’t stop defending Warnock either, I think his last 12 months was dreadful. There you go, a forum with varying opinions, there’s a suprise , I only raise these points to threads referencing either Harris out or the fact we have no money to buy new players, if Warnock had recruited well, he would still be in a job and you wouldn’t be responding to my opinions , AND Tan would have made money available right now for improvements, we need improvements, Tan must be looking at this squad losing to Carlisle thinking where’s my money gone, the same way as Cornelius etc. He and we deserve better than this, we are once again in a sticky limbo, and it’s poor management that’s landed us here, oh and no belittling or name calling please.

Oh and Dogfound

With respect, I fell in love with the City in 1991, in my opinion Eddie Mays div 3 team would have pushed Warnocks current squad all the way. Different level yes, but I certainly more often than not enjoyed watching the football they played. Much more so than Warnock.
