NEIL HARRIS: “IT WAS UNEXPECTED/ I DID NOT RECOGNISE THEM”

Wed Jan 01, 2020 7:00 pm

Cardiff manager Neil Harris told BBC Radio Wales: "It was hugely disappointing and hugely unexpected, I didn't recognise my team out there defensively.

"My teams don't defend like that, don't get opened up like that. One v one we weren't good enough... we'll be discussing those goals we conceded.

"First and foremost I need to apologise on behalf of the group... to our fan base that have travelled at an expensive time of the season. They don't deserve that."

The Bluebirds were woeful in north west London. The defence was far too charitable and the overall play was utterly disjointed and feckless.

It will come as a huge disappointment to Harris and City supporters in general, who had felt the club was on the cusp of turning a corner after a brilliant win over Sheffield Wednesday last weekend.

But the visitors were simply not good enough from the off and QPR capitalised early on and never looked back.

And, after the match, Harris was audibly unhappy with his team's shocking performance.

"I didn’t recognise my team out there defensively," Harris said.

"First and foremost I have to apologise to our fans. They don’t deserve that.

"The players need to look at themselves individually and collectively.”

The defeat has stirred ire among supporters and understandably so. It is the first time City have conceded six goals in a Championship match since 2009.

But the manager was firm in his words after the match and vowed such a tepid display would never happen again on his watch.

"Neil (Warnock) lost his job because of the performances of the players," the Bluebirds boss added.

"Some of them can’t reach the standards that I demand.

"What I can promise the fan base, it won’t happen again under me."

"What I can promise the fan base, it won't happen again under me"

Making a bit of a rod for his own back there maybe?

Painting himself into a corner - what will he do if it does happen again I wonder?

He was full of contradictions in the interview.
On the one hand says he didn't recognise them.
On the other said it confirmed what he thought about certain players.
I am not impressed with him.

Not really sure what he could say. He apologised to the fans. He has to sort it out and quickly.

Still stunned by how solid and combative and clinical at SW but so open, loose and shambolic 3 days later.

It won’t be a happy camp that’s for sure.

Some new players should help.

The club need to reconsider not spending any cash this month.

Trouble is he's is correct, certain players are simply not doing the basics right,at least he apologised, more than Warnock ever did,as he aluded to in interview, "Warnock lost his job because of the performances of the players)they have the aura of staleness about them)some of them cannot reach the standards I demand" quite a revealing and open statement to make, certain players need to be culled from the squad, made to train with the youngsters and play for the u 23's,the quicker we reach the 40 pt mark, throw a few youngsters in the mix,see if they can cut it,before loaning them out.can't be any worse than today's no show  this division is low quality below the top 2! Time to drop a few "regulars" imho, :old: :bluebird:

40 points?? We require at least 52 points to stay up based on recent Championship history.

Well I was expecting for some time I am just surprised it was QPR who did it to us. We have been riding our luck in most of our away games in the last few months. We were overrun in the first half at Brentford and Leeds, we were exposed at Charlton at times despite a great comeback and although we did dig in at Forest to get a good win, they created loads of chances but couldn't hit a barn door.

Our luck ran out on New Years Day.

We have not dominated a game for the full 90 minutes all season and it's certainly not got any better under the current manager.

Yes we have spells in games where we have a bit of pressure but mostly, even in the games we have won, we have spent most of the game under the cosh and if other teams had been able to finish like QPR did yesterday we may well be a lot worse off points wise than we actually are.
