Mendez-Laing is out Injured for the rest of the season.

Joe Ralls is "edging closer" and has an outside chance of making the derby against Swansea City on Sunday, January 12, while Joe Bennett is being assessed daily after a mid-air collision with Junior Hoilett at the weekend. Bennett revealed the extent of his injury this week with a picture on social media.

About Carlisle United

Carlisle United Football Club is a professional association football club based in Carlisle, Cumbria, England. The team compete in League Two, the fourth tier of the English football league system. They have played their home games at Brunton Park since 1909. The club's traditional kit is blue with white and red detail, whilst the badge takes elements from the city's coat of arms by including two wyverns. They are nicknamed the "Blues", due to their kit, as well as the "Cumbrians".

Formed in 1904, the club entered the Lancashire Combination the following year and were crowned Division Two champions in 1906–07. They entered the North Eastern League in 1910 and went on to win the league title in 1921–22, before being elected into the Football League in 1928. They spent the next 30 years in the Third Division North, at which point they were assigned a place in the newly formed Fourth Division, from where they won promotion in 1961–62. Relegated the following season, they then won two consecutive promotions, finishing the 1964–65 season as champions of the Third Division under the stewardship of Alan Ashman. They secured promotion out of the Second Division in 1973–74, but stayed only one season in the First Division and were relegated back to the Third Division at the end of the 1976–77 campaign. Promoted again under Bob Stokoe in 1981–82, they suffered successive relegations to return to the fourth tier by 1987.

Carlisle won promotion as champions of the fourth tier in 1994–95, but were relegated the next season, before winning promotion again in 1996–97, only to be relegated again the following year. Their 76-year stay in the Football League came to an end with relegation in 2003–04, though player-manager Paul Simpson secured an immediate return after leading United to victory the 2005 Conference National play-off Final. They then won the League Two title in 2005–06, and remained in League One until their relegation at the end of the 2013–14 season. The club has reached the final of the Football League Trophy six times, more than any other team, winning it in 1997 and 2011, and finishing as runners-up in 1995, 2003, 2006 and 2010.

Previous Meeting

We last played Carlisle United in March 2001, at Ninian Park in what is now League Two. Paul Brayson and Jason Bowen both scored two for the Bluebirds in a 4-1 win. Steve Halliday got a late consolation for Carlisle.

I think we will progress to the next round because
1 Harris takes the cup fairly seriously
2 Carlisle are in a lower league and are crap.
3 Harris can't afford a home defeat against a lower league outfit.
I predict 2-1 as our defence will concede but we will have enough to score more than them.

I think that's quite good support.

A very long journey and they're not having a good season in League Two.

Pointless playing reserves and risk losing especially as next game a week away? Plus are the fringe players in NH plans? If not what's point playing them?

the point in playing them is to not risk picking up further injuries..
it shouldn't really come as even a minor surprise its what all clubs do. and why tickets are cheap and moving slowly.

No it's no surprise but what will a defeat do? It's no good saying well it was a reserve side we put out, especially after the debacle Wednesday a defeat will alienate fans even more! :old:

Re: TEAM NEWS: " CARDIFF CITY v CARLISLE UNITED " MATCH THRE

No it will be that our reserves aren’t good enough... much like our first team in their quest for playoffs. The same reaction to every early round defeat we’ve had for the last 10 years. There is nothing to be gained from playing a full strength side so play a team to suit to the attendance and obvious lack of interest.

not sure any of the 25% of regulars that turn up will be expecting it to be the first team..so will put a defeat down to it being the reserves the same as those who swerve it..

How can NH demand a response from Wednesday's game when he wont be playing anyone from that game? Reserves dont have anything to respond to other than to impress before shipped out? :o

Speaking about his team selection ahead of the game, Harris said: "I look at it as an opportunity to progress, with total respect to the team from two leagues below."

"It'll be a tough game, a competitive game for us, but it's about trying to find balance between trying to keep continuity and a bit of flow to the team.
"But also giving people an opportunity to play for people that need minutes, and need an opportunity to impress me, and maybe one or two youngsters that have come into the group.

"The clear message is I want to win the game and I want to be in the fourth round draw. I'll pick a team accordingly to do that.

Cameron Coxe and Ciaron Brown are among the youngsters most likely to slot into the XI, while young Irishman Aaron Bolger may well be considered an option given the time spent with the first team during pre-season.

do your STs cover the cup.

Cardiff City boss Neil Harris is expected to make a number of changes for the FA Cup tie against League Two strugglers Carlisle United.

Cardiff will be without winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing as they look to respond after their 6-1 Championship defeat at Queens Park Rangers.

Mendez-Laing is likely to miss the rest of the season with a hamstring injury.

Joe Ralls is expected to miss out again with a broken hand, while Joe Bennett is also doubtful with an eye injury.

Carlisle boss Chris Beech has a number of fitness concerns as he plots a cup upset.

Defenders Jarrad Braithwaite and Christie Elliott are fitness doubts along with midfielders Stefan Scougall and Mo Sagaf.

Forward Hallam Hope is another worry for the Cumbrians as they target a first away win at Cardiff.

Who are the youngsters?

Cameron Coxe - Wales under-21 international and right back. One of the most promising players in the Bluebirds academy system, with fans having called for him to play this season
He got a run-out in the 3-0 drubbing by Luton Town earlier this season and, despite being caught out of position on a couple of occasions, largely impressed. He will have been champing at the bit for this opportunity.

Tom Sang - A left back signed by the Bluebirds from the Manchester United academy. The 20-year-old operates on the left-hand side, mainly at left back but can also be deployed on the wing. Has a lovely left foot on him and can whip in a fierce cross.

Sam Bowen - Son of former Bluebirds player Jason. The 18-year-old is a lovely little playmaker who operates in the middle of the park and has a great range of passing and a nice tempo about his game. A silky midfielder who can also put in a tackle.
