The good news is Harris can still reach the play-offs

By Glenn Williams

Friday 27th December 2019

This is the irony. There is disquiet, despondency even about the way the season is panning out, yet the Bluebirds are still only five points off the play-offs - despite barely playing well the whole campaign.

That, surely, has to be a reason for optimism.

Because if Harris can turn things around, get his Bluebirds playing better and turn the draws into wins, they can definitely charge towards the top six in the second half of the campaign.

The Bluebirds are really tough to beat, only top two West Brom and Leeds have lost fewer games.

The dilemma for Harris is how he evolves a no-frills approach into a more adventurous and creative one. Without the risk, the rewards probably won't come, yet some of these do seem like quick-fixes.

Harris is highly-rated within the Bluebirds dressing room and that has to be a good thing.

The early comparisons with Slade are unfair, but Harris is the only one who can banish those mentions by getting his team to play in a faster, more purposeful and easy on the eye manner.

Hopefully, in turn, that means more wins. With two or three quality signings in January, it's not beyond this side to climb back up that table.

That will not only keep the fans coming, but bring even more in through the turnstiles.

But a change in approach is clearly needed... and that needs to come from the top.

He's not wrong (in theory at least) but the style of football needs to start being a 'winning' one, at which point the majority of supporters (not including the armchair 'knockers') will general accept it

Had we won against Millwall yesterday, I am sure (with the usual exceptions) the tone on here would have been a little less negative ;)

The good news is we are not involved in a relegation fight. Play offs you must be joking! This team is fundamentally flawed across all parts of the pitch. I hope we use the window to offload as many players as possible at inflated prices and save our spending for the summer. Loan signings of young premiership players would be all that I'd consider in this window.

Mediocre players offloaded at inflated prices. Difficult

Mate, you’re right about a winning team but at the moment it’s very, very boring and reminds me of Slades tenure which I hated.

If it keeps up and we lose to the jacks I can see big trouble and unrest ahead.

Of course, on the positive side things could suddenly improve?

This season is about remaining in the championship whilst jettisoning the dead wood.

He's taken 'Warnock ball' and added a few sideways passes in the mix.

Yeah and a bit more possession which means nothing.
Warnock’s direct style produced a bit more excitement though.

It has done but not over the last month or so of his reign.

The fact we have changed managers has had no effect. Irrespective of the change we should be doing better and certainly playing better.

Serious question mate, what were you expecting in 8 or so games?

Paul, you're spot on!

My only point there was that the mentality of too many on here is one where the result is king and you are 100% right that any continuation of both style and results will further deflate the mood and rapidly decrease the numbers at the stadium

I hope you had a great time away?

From Harris, about what we got, awful appointment.

From another progressive manager, some tactics, try and change something, try and play some football and learn from mistakes earlier in the season. But from Harris, we have the same old players, worse football with no game plan. He says he watched all our games then dropped Nelson and plays Flint and Morrison together at Leeds, more than odd.

Yes they aren't his players but he was brought in to get more from what we had and has failed, I think we look worse.

If we had less points but I could see we were trying to progress and get an identity and a way of playing then fair enough but I'm struggling to think of two worse home games on the bounce where we have looked so clueless tactically.

My question I've never got an answer to is what was the game plan the last two games?

We are winning, but we’ve been very unconvincing and lucky in a fair few of those. Does Glenn Williams attend the games..

As the old saying goes"you can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear" no doubt Harris was convinced that the team/squad were capable of actually changing thee way they play, only to realise there is very little playing talent in the squad :!: the similarity is close to what slade had to do,and cut loose the deadwood, the sooner the better.people are quick to write off Glatzel, but I bet he was convinced he as coming to a team that could/would play football.let's hope he has the clear out needed, and gets a couple of Defford starters in January's window, loans or otherwise. :old: :bluebird:

A lot saying to offload the deadwood, but I ask, again, who would want any of our players? :sad7:

I don't think Harris has any intention of trying to play football tho. He didn't at Millwall and hasn't even tried to do anything different here, I'd say we have played even less football if anything. I can't even think what we have been trying to do the last 2 games.

Re: The good news is Harris

Sat Dec 28, 2019 10:51 am

Why people think Harris is trying to play football baffles me. He is happy playing like his old Millwall team but in the good it will be more effective with better players. He prefers lump it football and made no attempt to change that at millwall

Re: The good news is Harris

Nothing wrong with direct football, BUT.....

1. you need a striker who can hold the ball up or can nod down to advanced midfielder or second striker.
2. wingers must be able to cross the ball
3. corner and freekick delivery must be accurate
4. some speed in central defence or defensive midfield is essential
5. if full backs advance somebody from midfield must drop back to cover.

oh and.....
counter attacks need to be done at speed not walking pace.
