Cardiff City line up January transfer swoop for former Arsenal defender - reports
By Glen Williams

Friday 28th December 2019

Bluebirds boss Neil Harris has said that left back is an area he is looking to strengthen next month and he might have identified the perfect candidate

Cardiff City are reportedly interested in signing Colchester United left back Cohen Bramall in January.

Bluebirds boss Neil Harris has said left back is a position in which he might look to strengthen in the New Year and has apparently singled out Bramall as a candidate to fill that berth.

Sources have told Football Insider that Harris is keeping tabs on Bramall, 23, who has impressed since moving to the League Two club in the summer.

Bramall rose to prominence when he signed for Premier League giants Arsenal in 2017, having been plucked from Non-League Hednesford Town.

He was unable to force his way into the reckoning at The Emirates and was shipped out on loan along with Carl Jenkinson to Birmingham City, where he made an immediate impression .

He could not hold down a regular place at St Andrew's, however, playing just eight games during his loan spell there, and was subsequently sent back.

It never truly worked out for him at the Gunners — he failed to make a first-team appearance in two-and-a-half years — but Colchester came calling and he has finally been able to string together a run of games.

The U's have started the season well and are very much in the promotion mix, with Bramall, who has scored once and provided a further three assists, having been a crucial creative force at left back.

And there is no doubt that full-back is an area the Bluebirds need to strengthen next month.

Joe Bennett has had no competition for his spot all season and has consequently looked jaded.

Jazz Richards finally returned from injury to relieve Bennett of his duties last weekend and impressed, but there is no doubting the Wales international is more suited to playing on the other flank.

Greg Cunningham's situation is also very much up in the air. His season-long loan to Blackburn Rovers appears to have been cut short owing to a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury he sustained and he is now undergoing much of his rehab with the Lancashire club.

Joel Bagan is one of the club's bright hopes coming through the academy, however Harris believes the 18-year-old is not quite ready to make that leap up to senior football just yet.

Therefore Bramall might well be a perfect fit. An attack-minded left back who, following indifferent spells with Arsenal and Birmingham, will be desperate to prove he can cut it at this level.

We have possibly 2 of the best 5 left backs in the championship on our books and he wants to strengthen that position.
Its possibly the one position we are strong especially given Richard's and Connolly can play there if needed

Problem is our slower defenders can't play together because it leaves us vulnerable at the back against any team with even the smallest amount of pace

Cunningham is out for the rest of the season, Connolly is injured and I can’t remember the last time he played, and jazz’s injury record speaks for itself and he’s better on the right. Plus I doubt jazz and Connolly will be here next season. We need cover at LB and I doubt this transfer will break the bank. No idea how good he but he’s only 23 so could be a good bit of business.

So. Forward thinking and trying to improve a squad with another lot of parachute payment to come and we follow on from buys at Oxford to now players from Colchester. OMG I suggest we need midfielders and wingers first don’t you. Why not try for someone like Wallace at Millwall whose constantly good.

What makes you think we're not in the process of getting players for those positions?

You only need 2 left backs and we have 2 quality players.Cunningham is currently injured but he will return then we are left with too many. What sense does that make when we are cutting costs ?
We are desperate in other positions and should concentrate on midfield and strikers.

Regardless of these rumours with I never take any interest in, we need to buy or loan players better than we have.
I’m sick of all the squad players who rarely play like Vaulks.

Yes we need squad players but we have enough. Buy first team players or none at all.

So sad we seemingly have no youth team players capable of stepping up into any position

Agreed Warnock filled us up with squad players, we need players better than the ones already here or not bother! Ideally move out 6/7 and buy 2/3 first choice players!

So he never played for Arsenal but he's refereed to as a "former Gunner".

I never played for Real Madrid - does that make me a "former Galactico"?

I suppose "City lining up Colchester player" is not quite as eye catching eh?

If it wasn’t for jazz coming back from injury (finally) we would have had to play brown, a youth player out of position to cover Bennet and potentially coxe at rb to cover Peltier. I am all for giving youth a chance but it seems they aren’t ready for the step up yet. Doesn’t matter how many fullbacks we have next season, we are currently 1 injury away from relying on youth. Jazz and Connolly are out of contract next season anyway. How long are you expecting jazz to go injury free for as well? Cunningham has made it clear he doesn’t want to be second choice and I’d imagine he is on a decent wage as well. Can’t see him being here next season unless Bennet is sold/dropped. So it makes more sense to get a cheaper option in.

We do need better midfielders but realistically we need a new left and right back as well.
