CITY STARTING XI OF THE DECADE?

Cardiff's team of the decade

We asked fans from all 24 Sky Bet Championship clubs to pick their teams of the decade.

Here, Cardiff fan Owen Deacon gives us his selection...

Do you agree?

Goalkeeper: David Marshall

Hard to look past the Scotsman's 2013/14 Premier League season. Loyal as they come, staying with the Bluebirds following relegation.

Right-back: Lee Peltier

Brought in by Russell Slade, the former Huddersfield captain has remained a stalwart at right-back for several years and proved a reliable leader.

Centre-back: Sol Bamba

Signed on a free transfer by Neil Warnock, the Ivorian started as and remains a fan favourite in South Wales. A real leader and great defender.

Centre-back: Mark Hudson

The former club captain led Cardiff to their first Premier League stint in club history. Would have run through walls for the team.

Left-back: Joe Bennett

Despite a poor season so far, Bennett helped lead Cardiff to a second Premier League promotion. Quickly became a fan favourite amongst Bluebirds fans.

Right-midfield: Craig Bellamy

The Welshman enjoyed a superb loan spell before winning promoting with Cardiff in 2013. His incredible winner vs Swansea will never be forgotten.

Central midfield: Joe Ralls

Playing frequently for Cardiff's development side, the Englishman has featured consistently for the Bluebirds midfield since he was introduced properly in 2014.

Central midfield: Gary Medel

Nicknamed 'El Pitbull', the former Sevilla midfielder featured in 2013/14 before going on to captain Chile to the World Cup last 16.

Left-midfield: Peter Whittingham

No explanation needed. Had one of the best left foots the Championship has ever seen. Frequently featured in the Championship Team of the Season.

Striker: Jay Bothroyd

The last English Cardiff player to earn a call-up to his national side. Scoring for fun, the complete forward ran riot for the Bluebirds.

Striker: Michael Chopra

The journeyman enjoyed a great spell for Cardiff between 2009 and 2011, scoring 28 goals. His winner against Swansea will be written into Bluebird folklore forever.

I think Having Kenwyne Jones for the years he was with us was quite fun and worth a mention. delivering us goals on the pitch and being a class act off it too.

I think Gunnarson & Manga should be included too. Players that in a few years time the people who don’t appreciate them right now will eventually

With one exception Chris that would be my starting XI, the only change would be Bruno Mamga for Morrison. Looking at the team there are 8 Dave Jones players in there so for all the money spent since he left it's his players who still stay in the hearts of bluebirds fans.

Hard to argue with that, Gary. I just think Morrison has been a little more consistent in that position and I Manga occasionally scared me with his forward forays :laughing6:

For me, as miserable as he was perceived, the Dave Jones years were amongst my favourite as a City supporter and I'd love to have one if his City XI walking out to play Millwall tomorrow

Merry Christmas to you and your family, Gary :ayatollah: :bluescarf:

As good as Medel was for one season I dont understand how anyone could pick him over Gunnarson? Each to their own though I suppose

Super kev has to be in there, could play anywhere in the back four and we wouldnt be worried about it

As soon as I seen pelts in this the fan has lost all sort of football credibility. Kev mcnaughton miles ahead of him

Wilfried Zaha  wow some the things that get posted on here

Re: CITY STARTING XI OF THE DECADE?

Thu Dec 26, 2019 9:59 am

If its about pedigree and whether you would pick them at their best then Zaha not unreasonable. If its about what they did for us clearly not.

Same logic can apply to Danny Drinkwater. Don't think weve had too many players here who have gone on to win PL or command a £35 million fee!

You would put him in your team now , if you didn't you would know zero about football because he is the best winger we've probably ever had talent wise, even if he did not have the best of times here he is a quality player.
I thought this was about naming a team from the players we've had over the last 10 years and Zaha is by far the best winger

If the criteria is not what they have done in a city shirt then Zaha is a good shout Thomasblue.

so he is in , but not for his performances / time here .?
if that's the criteria fair enough but for me those in a Cardiff City team of the decade should be the ones who made big contributions for Cardiff City...

Just thomasblue trying to be different again! Zaha was a disgrace in a city shirt. It's the Cardiff city team of the decade, so the players who were best for us.

Spot on. He came on as sub in his first game and looked promising. Had one decent game, didn’t want to know and was pathetic.

It doesnt ask who was the best player it asks who would be in your starting 11.
It says nothing about how they played for us and at the moment everybody would have to have Zaha because it's a fact he is the best winger by a country mile to have played for us in the last 10 years

As far as I can see it's a team made up of players who have played not who played the best, if it was then no he wouldnt be in my team either

No he is not... stop trying to justify it he was awful for us and purposely had a stinker at home to palace one of the most obvious and disgraceful performances I have seen

I dont need to justify anything to anybody I have my own opinions and I stick to them. He was no worse than most of the others that season and certainly no worse than we've had since. Hes a quality player if you dont like it dont comment

If this was Palace’s player of the decade yes. For Cardiff he would most likely be in the Top 10 for most disappointing players.

Peltier vs SuperKev ?

Thats easy ......Bruno, better than both of them at not his natural position

Zaha

Jesus this is hard work. It's like speaking to a wall.
It is NOT asking who played the best its asking to make up a team of players from the decade to make a team . And in that scenario Zaha makes the team . If its who played the best then he wouldnt.

Read that over and over until it gets into your head

it asks for the Cardiff City team of the decade...
picking Zaha is like choosing OGS as Cardiff City manager of the decade based on his MUFC and Molde record.
if it was best players that have played here you would be correct. but its difficult to remember even one game where he was anything like as good as he has been for Palace.

Exactly what I am trying to say. I k ow he was shite for us at times but hes undoubtedly the best winger we have had this decade. That's just a fact

That's true actually. I'll pick OGS as our manager of the decade due to his record at Mould. Great point Dogfound haha
