ROSE-TINTED SPECTACLES ?

Tue Dec 24, 2019 2:19 pm

My favourite era watching the city was late 60's/early 70's and I've been reflecting on the consistency of many of the players at this time, the complete opposite of what is served up today. How many of today's team can put together 3 consistently good performances let alone 30. Maybe it's my mind playing tricks but I hardly saw players such as Gary Bell, Peter King, Don Murray, Brian Harris and Ian Gibson have a bad game.

That they never had the chance to ply their trade in Div 1 could possibly have been down to the Toshack sale, which has been well documented but there may have other reasons as well, such as the lack of investment in the club at the time.

Nevertheless, it would be heartening if just a core of today's players could be relied upon to deliver on a regular basis.

yes rose tinted or blue tinted...pitches are better, footballs are better.. footwear is better...players are fitter.. plus we have rafts of foreign players which should mean we watch a better product..
we didn't have a great deal to compare it with though...no live games just little clips on MOTD.. think we were easier pleased..

I'm still amazed that the most recent promotion was gained playing such a turgid brand of football barring the first 5 games and the Toshack-era team only had a few nibbles at getting promoted despite playing some great football by comparison.

Thinking about it, some of the football played under Dave Jones was sublime but that was another case of under-achieving.

At least Warnock can say that against all odds he got the team promoted and nobody will ever be able to take that away from him.

And what would Peter King and Ian Gibson have made of not being able to be tackled from behind?

Clubs had much much smaller squads but still managed to field 11. Only one sub. No rotation, no resting, no mri scans, maybe no hamstrings!
Muddy pitches, heavy ball, 50/50 tackles, waiting for the football echo and working out where we were in new table. Season ticket booklet with coupons to tear out and vouchers for cup games. Programme sellers, no fourth official, trainer with a bucket and a wet sponge and a slice of orange at half time. Mid week sports special, listening to the fa cup draw on the radio and Wales always coming up short in qualifying.
