Cardiff City's Josh Murphy dilemma as fans left divided after he was jeered off against Preston

By Glen Williams (Media Wales )

Sunday 22nd December 2019

The Bluebirds winger was substituted just after the hour and there was an enormous reaction from sections of supporters inside Cardiff City Stadium which has split opinion

It is no secret that Josh Murphy has struggled to hit the heights many believed he would this season.

Cardiff City fans hoped his pace, trickery and eye for a vicious shot from range would be telling in this Championship campaign, but his inconsistent displays have left some supporters teeming with frustration.

It rarely helps when you come into a club with a hefty price tag. His £11m transfer fee from Norwich is invariably used against him on social media when supporters cite his poor displays.

And while he is yet to hit his straps for the Bluebirds, there is no doubting his talent, of which we saw glimpses in the Premier League.

So, why has it not worked out as planned for him thus far in a Cardiff shirt? He is arguably one of City's most gifted players but simply shows it far too rarely. Is his confidence too low? Is he struggling to slot into the system properly? Have defenders worked him out?

His flashes of positive play have been too few and far between and he will know that. It is also a position in which City are well stocked, with Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Junior Hoilett and Gavin Whyte all clipping at Murphy's heels for a starting berth.

City boss Neil Harris has asked the board to allow him time to judge his players before the January transfer window opens and he will have been running an analytical eye over each of them in the last month or so.

We know Harris wants to streamline his squad and has given many the chance to impress over the last seven games – he has already used 21 players. So it is certainly a dilemma facing the manager over the coming weeks.

But Murphy is a player who is clearly splitting fans' opinions and that was made abundantly clear by the controversial jeering at his substitution against Preston .

The winger had done little to impact the game, albeit he was afforded few opportunities against an impressive Preston outfit, and when it was announced he would be departing for Danny Ward on the hour and some supporters made their displeasure known.

It caused a stir among some fans who believe, despite the player's poor run of form, it is the supporters' jobs to get behind their own, not jeer them off after a lacklustre display.

Many of those who did jeer argue they have paid their money and can voice their opinion in any which way they choose.

Whichever side of the fence you lie, it wasn't a good look for anyone and would have done little for Murphy's confidence. And with the January window looming, the winger has just a few more opportunities to really prove to his manager and the fans that this is where he belongs and that he can make a real impact.

He is still just 24, remember, and time is certainly on his side. His best years could quite conceivably still be ahead of him. But there is a massive and immediate onus on him to produce.

The wingers are so crucial to how City set up and players of Murphy's ability simply must be shouldering more responsibility. Far too much of the attacking burden is falling on Lee Tomlin's shoulders and it is weighing down heavily on him – he needs help from the flanks.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has blown hot and cold and Junior Hoilett has shown flashes but is struggling with fitness. This is a crucial period in Cardiff City's season and could make or break their play-off push.

But for Murphy, this little period of fixtures represents a crucial juncture for him. Although he might not think it, the small section of supporters who jeered him are desperate for him, and the team, to do well.

Whether they were right or wrong in what they did, they simply want a successful Cardiff City team and would love nothing more than for Murphy to prove them wrong.

How he responds is important and a riproaring display against Millwall on Boxing Day would be the perfect riposte for him to silence his detractors.

The main problem he does not even seem to be trying We can all have a bad game but there is not effort He seems to bottle out of any contact

Unfortunately for him it's gone past the jeering stage . He was cheered off and when that happens it's gone too far. He will need to find a new club or seriously turn his form around quickly

Modern players need to man up instead of sulking if they get booed by fans.
There lucky to be paid in a week what most fans earn in a year.
Form goes up down you have to put effort into your game for the fans not look disinterested then moan.

It’s not about ability I have said this before he needs to grow a set of balls. Again watching yesterday when ever he’s near the ball he doesn’t even put a challenge in. No effort desire just not interested. You can only give him so many chances.

Preston done a job on him and Lang.Always 2 or 3 players in front of them.

The simple truth is , he doesn't give a toss about the club or the fans. Total waste of talent.

Mendez played well though and beat his three men, on many occasions.

"Whether they were right or wrong in what they did, they simply want a successful Cardiff City team and would love nothing more than for Murphy to prove them wrong" and the best way to achive that is to cheer/boo when a player is subbed, I wonder how that works

He has been quoted as being homesick. I fear for the Christmas period for him if I'm being honest.

I am not sure on his educational attainment, but he appears an intelligent, quietly spoken young man in what may appears quite a bit of a rogues gallery squad. A few couldn't travel to the states, our captain has been involved in some dubious situations and our former manager has you tube videos of "motivational" team talks.

Maybe he just doesn't fit.

The last time we did that was against a club legend after one very poor half, so we have form

Why shouldn't vastly over paid players get stick when they've had a terrible game? Football matches are not cheap to attend, many of our supporters, especially from the Valleys, are on low wages. If they've spent a lot of their spare money on coming to watch us, they can boo/cheer us much as they like.

Re: Cardiff City player was Jeered off the pitch by Cardiff

Sun Dec 22, 2019 8:32 pm

All we ask for as fans is that he gives 100%, and he isn't doing that, he hasn't for months.

I have a lot of patience when it comes to city players, I always try and support them through whatever, but he's gone way passed that, he needs to go for the benefit of himself and our club

On a separate note, madine walked straight off the pitch at the final whistle. Didn’t even shake hands with the opposition players. All the other players applauded the fans walked around the pitch etc

A canary? No, a Jack as always.

Do you mean this is my new username? Of course it is. No Idea who fussyliar52 is.

You asked me what law stops you making a profit in football, yes.

I answered, telling you that it wasn't the discussion or what was being implied in the slightest. I explained what the discussion was and explained in great detail why it was illegal... you then disappeared :laughing6:

I ANSWERED you in great detail. Quite comprehensively so.

You said ''Corbyn didn't win mate'', meaning you thought it was fine then due to that, otherwise why say it?

You are digging yourself a hole here.
