We need a change of formation

Sun Dec 22, 2019 9:33 am

In my opinion we're still playing with the wrong formation. We have two wingers and two midfielders, where we should have three centre halves and two wingbacks given the freedom to go forward at will.

I would plays Mendez and Hoillet as wingbacks.

I would also play Ward and Madine as two up top with Tomlin in behind.

You end up with a 5-2-1-2 formation.

Mendez Jazz Bamba Neilson Hoillet

Pack Ralls
Tomlin

Ward Madine

I think Ward and Madine could also, given time, develop a good partnership.

Let the abuse start...

No abuse mate but imho and based on yesterday also, the front two are no way a partnership

For me we have an issue with getting decent ball forward. We were so used to lobbing it forward we don't seem to have a plan b.
With Nelson as a CB we are much more solid. We have a plethora of forwards who are all capable of scoring but for me the linking is dreadful with limited ability of the midfield to grip a game by the scruff of the neck. Yes. We need another option at right or left back. Or both. Jazz being fit would help. But I've felt a issue in the middle for a few seasons. Maybe a Joe Allen or equivalent.

Was a desperate attempt to change game but from what I heard on radio it made no difference because of players behind them.. better off leaving glatzel on and put madine on only

That was my initial thought too but then I realised that Glatzel has only just recovered from hamstring problems so good decision to rest him I reckon :thumbright:

Probably right considering he was fighting a losing battle, but still dont think NH was right to put both on at same time why not give madine 15 mins earlier with glatzel we certainly wouldn't have missed Murphy yesterday

Any reason why we can’t play a 4-3-3

I don't think NH wanted to change it that much so early..Madine took Glatzels place leading the line , Ward actually played central a bit behind, where Tomlin had been and tbh had been a bit ineffective. Tomlin drifted out wide left, but not to the extent of being a winger. personally I felt the last 15/20 mins was a bit of an improvement . they went deeper and Tomlin actually got on the ball a few times..

I haven't re watched the game it was bad enough live, but i seem to remember that NML and Murphy were tucked in quite a bit and pretty narrow and almost reluctant to hug the lines or make diagonal runs, especially NML

Said it before on here - We need to play 4-4-2 at home .... This is how NH played it at Millwall :o

It seems that the days of the striking partnerships gone for good.

Toshack/keegan, Shearer/Beardsley, Rush/Saunders, Chopra/Bothroyd, Henry/ Bergkamp. Mark Hughes and a few at United. Robbie Fowler and a few at Liverpool.

Debate now about which one striker to play with some let's play two at home but which two. Surely like centre halfs, improvement comes from an understanding. I'm sure those strikers all benefitted from better service than ours currently receive but they had a foil. Ask a CH what they would rather defend against and all would surely say one striker as the defenders always have a spare man.
