Injuries

How long you got! (Aden) Flint’s going struggle for this weekend. You don’t come off the pitch during the game often and manage to get yourself on the pitch the following game. He’s going to struggle

Junior (Hoilett) is similar. He’s still not quite right. (Gary) Madine is similar as well. There are one or two others who have picked up knocks who are going to struggle for the game.

Centre-back crisis?

Someone’s misfortune is another one’s gain. Curtis (Nelson) was outstanding when he came on at the weekend as he has been since I came in. Sol (Bamba) is ready to go. He wants to play and he’s getting fitter. Where’s his levels at? We’ll see. But he’s eager to play. We’ve got young Ciaron Brown, who’s played international football, so we’ve got strength in depth in that position.

Panadero

Player I’ve never heard of. The club aren’t aware of him. There’s no foundation to it at all.

Welsh lessons are wasted then?

NEIL HARRIS:

How do you identify targets?

"I’m piecing together knowledge and how we I see the group.

You have to add in the players that want to go on to pastures new, maybe because of family or location, or opportunity. You have to be reactive to left field that becomes available or wants to leave. January is the hardest window to deal in because the demands can be crazy.

I’ve spoken to the club already in regards to where the squad’s at. That will obviously stay between us. Ultimately, it’s about trying to keep the players you want to keep. Trying to keep everyone focused and trying to keep speculation quiet.

If you do feel like you want to add one or two you have to make sure you add the right characters. We have a good group of lads here and they’re a hard-working group."

Christmas review with everyone about whether they want to stay?

It’s a tough thing to have to do. It’s like any industry. I do have those conversations with players and have had them. Players who you feel are close but aren’t getting a chance because of someone else, I tell them to be patient. You’re in my plans, and they always say ‘oh but I want to play, gaffer’.

Morrison red card appeal

NEIL HARRIS:

I’m really disappointed. Firstly, at the time I didn’t think it was a red card. I do understand the modern game and the need for us to protect players because of the game now. But the more I watched it, the more I was convinced it wasn’t a red card. There’s a genuine attempt for the ball. No one the pitch could believe it was red card.

Both benches were amazed and said after they couldn’t believe it. I thought the right to appeal was there. So I’m majorly disappointed that three people sitting in a room decided not to overhaul it.. The craziest thing though is that they’ve kept it at three games. I don’t see any common sense in that at all. We’re really disappointed

Sol BAMBA ready?

NEIL HARRIS :

"Sometimes when players get to a certain age they’re the best judge on whether they’re ready or not. Players know their body better than anybody and you as a player have to learn to listen to your body. It doesn’t happen in your teens or 20s. He’s got huge understanding of himself and experience of the game. He knows he hasn’t been ready for the intensity I’ve wanted to work at. But he’s had four weeks of that now. You always want players to have more."

"Sol starts on Saturday, would I be relaxed? Yes I would be. He’s a personality, a leader and let’s not forget, he’s a very good centre-half. If his opportunity comes on Saturday, it’s up to him to grab that opportunity."

Re: BREAKING NEIL HARRIS:

Up front. Lots of options. Glatzel scored a great goal?

NEIL HARRIS:

"I’ve got a few decisions to make across the pitch. They’re good decisions to have. Good dilemmas. Madine when he’s played has done very well. He’s played in four games and we’ve had 10 points. He didn’t start at Brentford but came on and was the best player on the pitch for half an hour. Ward has played in two tough away games where he’s had to work as hard as anybody to make an impact. Glatzel too. "

"Omar Bogle too is desperate to be involved and wants to player play. We’ve got options. I’ve got combinations of players, along with Callum Paterson, that can find different ways to score goals and that’s what we have to do."

NEIL HARRIS:

Preston

"The league table doesn’t lie. You are where you deserve to be. They’ve done really well to get themselves into the position they are. They’ve got a settled squad of players and a settled manager who’s done very well with the group. They can control the ball in numbers, but they can get the ball forward quickly. They’re not a total football side and they’re not a long ball side and I think that’s a good mix in the Championship. Alex (Neil) has got a good group of players that he’s assembled and they’ve got the ability to play really good football."

"We have to make sure defensively we’re as good as we were against Forest and Stoke and, at times, against Brentford. We have to make sure we have an attacking intent to us as well. They’ve got some size and presence, so we have to be at our best. We’ve got to be at our best. Leeds were the best team I’ve seen in the Championship. Brentford were not far behind. Preston are between them. "

"We have to make sure that on the back of a really good week’s training the XI I put out on the pitch are ready to cause problems."

Kodjia?

Aston Villa's Jonathan Kodjia

NEIL HARRIS:

"Again. I don’t know where these stories come from. I’ve seen us linked to a number of players in the last seven to 10 days. Here’s just little inkling into what happens. I get a call about a player, or the recruitment team get a call about a player. I’m a very honest person and sometimes I will just say ‘no’. Or I might say ‘he’s not a bad player, but we’ve got a big group, I need to look at the group first’."

"As soon as you say that. The following day, and I’ve had it since I’ve been here, we’re linked to that player. And it’s not what I’ve said. I just say I’m aware of the player and he’s got good attributes. That’s how agents work. They gather momentum and stories to make themselves look good in front of their players and try to use it to their advantage. If we’re in for a player, hopefully you guys are the last to know. I like to work in secrecy and it should stay between us, the club, we’re going to, and the player’s representatives. That’s how I like to work."

Re: BREAKING NEIL HARRIS:

Leeds - how do you build on that?

NEIL HARRIS:

"I look at it as where we fell short for a period. Every game I analyse personally, analyse the stats. Go through certain elements of the game as you know, to look at where we fall short."

Did we give Leeds a leg up? Yes. Brentford the same. Leeds was perhaps a little tactical and we always look at ourselves first. Brentford might have been more mental and personality wise.

But then you say, how can we do better.Did we deserve anything at Brentford? Debatable. Did we deserve anything at Leeds, probably not.

But there’s so much more I’m pleased with than things I’m not pleased with.

"They’re not battles I can win over night but I’m really pleased with my group. They got a lot of praise and rightly so."

Departures?

NEIL HARRIS:

"I suppose losing more than you get in is probable, because of the size of the group. Having said that with the injuries we have at the moment, it helps to have a big squad. But when everyone’s fit it’s difficult to manager, not because of characters, but because they’re professionals - they want to play. They want to play football, it’s their pride and joy."

"The probability is more will go than come in."

"Players who go is often down to the players themselves. As ever I’m really honest. I just sit down with the player for a cup of tea or out on the training pitch and think what does the player want? Does the player want to sit and not be first choice in my team, and go play somewhere? Be close to the team and be patient. Or you’re down the pecking order for whatever reason. If they want to go somewhere else and play then why not? Go and do it."

"Forcing out is not a terminology I’d use."

Neil Harris' transfer update, giving Leeds United a leg up and the 'good' Cardiff City dilemmas he's got on his plate - Wales Online

By Tom Coleman

19 DEC 2019

Neil Harris says there are more things he's pleased with than things he is not after a solid start to his Cardiff City tenure.

The Bluebirds came back from 3-0 down to grab a draw against Leeds United last weekend and Harris says he is looking at where they fell short at Elland Road in order to learn from his mistakes.

Ahead of the match against Preston on Saturday, the boss said: "I look at it as where we fell short for a period. Every game I analyse personally, analyse the stats. Go through certain elements of the game as you know, to look at where we fall short.

"Did we give Leeds a leg up? Yes. Brentford the same. Leeds was perhaps a little tactical and we always look at ourselves first. Brentford might have been more mental and personality wise.

"But then you say, how can we do better. Did we deserve anything at Brentford? Debatable. Did we deserve anything at Leeds, probably not.

"But there’s so much more I’m pleased with than things I’m not pleased with.

"They’re not battles I can win over night but I’m really pleased with my group. They got a lot of praise and rightly so."

Harris delivered the latest team news, with a crisis at centre-back a very real possibility after Sean Morrison's red card appeal was rejected and Aden Flint struggling with injury. "I’m really disappointed," he added.

"Firstly, at the time I didn’t think it was a red card. I do understand the modern game and the need for us to protect players because of the game now. But the more I watched it, the more I was convinced it wasn’t a red card. There’s a genuine attempt for the ball. No one the pitch could believe it was red card."
