Danny Ward sums up Cardiff City dressing room in one word as he sends 'big club' Leeds United a telling warning

The striker revealed what boss Neil Harris told the players right at the death of the game at Elland Road

By Glen Williams

Danny Ward's post-match comments about the stunning Leeds United comeback sum up Cardiff City under Neil Harris.

The striker played his part in the remarkable events at Elland Road and the former Whites youngster was quick to point out what key Bluebirds trait is shining through at the moment.

Cardiff were 3-0 down, dead and buried in Yorkshire before the visitors went and turned things round in dramatic fashion.

Ward described it as "massive" - but it was another word he used repeatedly that sums up this Harris team. That term? Character.

Cardiff fought back to 2-2 after being 2-0 down in Harris' first game in charge at Charlton and scored a last-gasp winner against Barnsley earlier this month.

And that attitude was on display on Saturday, believes Ward.

He said : "It just shows the character of the lads. Coming here, we knew how tough it was going to be and you could see the quality that Leeds have in the first 10 minutes.

"But again, it’s the character we have in the dressing room and we ground it out, even though we weren’t at our best."

Ward, who hails from Bradford, was on the books at Elland Road as a teenager, and described the magnitude of the result for the visitors.

Speaking after the game, Ward explained: "I’m from Bradford and grew up supporting them (Bradford), but I spent a bit of time at Leeds from under-12s to under-16s. When I joined, they had been in the Champions League a couple of years before with players like Alan Smith and Mark Viduka.

"It’s obviously a big club, so to come here and to get a point after the start we made was massive for us."

Ward was keen to stress the qualities of Saturday's opponents, but also sounded them a warning after one of the most unlikely comebacks.

"The quality they have is clear to see and is why they were top of the league leading up to this game," he said.

"We knew it was going to be really tough, but we dug in and managed to get a point.

"If they can keep playing like how they started the game, and seeing the results out, then I don’t see why not (promotion). They’re a quality team and play some very good stuff."

Then, after pegging them back, the caveat of blowing leads in games.

"The comeback showed the desire and never-give-up attitude that we have got," he added. "It’s going to be tough for them, but you can see their quality."

Marcelo Bielsa's side blew their promotion chances last season when well placed but seem destined for the Premier League this time.

The Bluebirds have faced both Leeds and fellow high-flyers West Brom away from South Wales now and Ward is under no illusions over how good they both are.

"West Brom have got quality having been in the Premier League and, the way Bielsa has got Leeds set up, they’re different to previous Leeds teams of recent years," he said.

"They are the two stand-out teams. Facing Leeds is tough but like I say, we showed a never-say-die spirit and got our rewards. The gaffer has been brilliant since he came in and just told us to keep going right to the death because you never know what can happen.

"You saw that today - we won't give up until the final whistle."

Character is a great trait to have at any level of football and will go a long way into helping Harris build a team of his own eventually, hopefully.

Madine, Glatzel and Ward are all very good options now.

I would personally start Madine and Glatzel most of the time, with Ward to come off the bench because he can always get a goal.

I see Glatzel as the number 9 and first choice and definitely see Ward as a better option from the bench

I do as well but we’ll see how the manager goes.

I'm sure Glatzel will grow into the role

Hate to be a party pooper but this may only last so long. Mew manager syndrome still. We will eventually actually have to start going ahead on the score line and playing well to win games.

Agreed, that's a given.

But he clearly didn't get much opportunities under Warnock. Had a few starts, then on the bench for a bit and then scored a penalty, but that was it.

The fact that he got a goal under pressure in his first match under Harris, and off the bench, will lift his confidence hugely.

Half of being a footballer is the talent and half is confidence. At least that's what Thomas Hitzlsperger told me when he visited my school

If he had missed that chance on Saturday, he'd be feeling that the world is against him at this club. It's small moments like that which can change a player's prospects with a club.

Are you talking ward or Glatzel? Because Glatzel has scored 3 this season I'm sure,Inc a penalty.let's see how he fares ,now he has somebody who is capable of spotting his runs (tomlin )and agree, ward can make impact from the bench. :old: :bluebird:

I ment the team in general, not ward. But also agree with what you're saying.

didn't play at Wigan as he was banned....
then....11 consecutive starts prior to getting injured = didn't get much opportunity under Warnock..
nobody did mate, according to some ,Warnock must have played himself in about 9 positions while he wasn't being fair to people holding grudges and not giving them opportunities..

Ward for me is a impact sub, I don't think he does the basics well enough to start but he certainly likes to shoot
