Cardiff City and Stoke City line up Barnsley midfielder for January transfer swoop - reports

Monday 16th December 2019

By Glen Williams

The Bluebirds are facing stiff competition if they are to land this player, however Neil Harris has spoken about bolstering his squad when the window opens next month

Cardiff City are reportedly interested in signing Barnsley midfielder Cameron McGeehan.

Bluebirds boss Neil Harris has hinted that he will dip his toe in the water in the January transfer market as he looks to mould this squad to fit his philosophy.

He has already identified the wing-back positions as key areas he might look to strengthen when the window opens next month, but has reiterated that players will have to leave if any are to be brought in to this already oversized squad.

But, according to Football League World , sources close to McGeehan have said both Cardiff and Championship rivals Stoke City are interested in prising McGeehan away from the Tykes next month.

McGeehan, 24, was a key cog in the wheel for Daniel Stendel during their promotion campaign last season, scoring six goals, but has seemingly fallen out of favour under new boss Gerhard Struber.

He has played just 21 minutes in five games under Struber, despite scoring twice from central midfield in his 12 games, and as such might well be seeking a move away from the Yorkshire club in the new year.

The Barnsley boss is also actively seeking to trim his squad in January, meaning he is more likely to sell.

"This is an aim - that our squad gets smaller," Struber said this week. "For me and my staff, it is better to work with a smaller team and we can work in development.

"If we have a smaller group, the concentration and focus is not for 28 players maybe the next time (in January).

"This is a very important thing to what we do the next time."

City boss Harris, meanwhile, is likely to have funds made available to him if he also offloads a number of players in the January window.

He has asked the board for time in order to assess where he wants to strengthen his squad, where he wants to streamline and which players he wants moving forward when the window slams shut at the end of next month.

So we are after a player who can’t get into a team who are bottom of the league. Very uninspiring.

Bamba didn't even have a club when we took him on and look how that turned out.

Just because we’ve had a couple of lower end signings which turned out to be great doesn’t mean every one we make will be the same. Majority of these players are where they are for a reason. Time for us to show a bit of ambition.

It's not quite the same. Bamba might have been looking for a contract that his club at the time, Leeds, could not offer. He was also publicly outspoken against the Leeds owner, Cellino, which wouldn't have helped his cause.
A player who can't get into a team bottom of the Championship doesn't fill you with confidence.

If it's true I would think we need to be setting our sights higher than a Barnsley player. We seemed to have finished recruiting from Rotherham then?

Barnsley maybe bottom of the league but their midfield tore ours apart the other week and maybe they wouldn't be bottom is they had McGeehan in the team but he doesn't get on with the manager or something he is 24 wont cost a lot and has to be better than ours at the moment as every game its clear we need something in midfield that is better than Pack and Bucuna who leave us in danger in in the centre of the pitch

Bacuna has been on the whole very good and also pack?

Camarassa still not getting a game even though palace have the worse injury list since hodgson took over would he be worth a stab for a loan.

Valleyrambill is right. Barnsleys midfield ran us ragged when we played them.

Sol a very unusual case as he'd been captain only months before too.

Our midfield currently has little flair or creativity yet doesn't have solidity or strength either.

I see little in Bacuna to make us better and Pack doesn't tackle.

Our change surely has to be trying to have more of the ball and to stop hoping to win games with 38% possession. I know possession doesn't win games but it helps and we need midfielders that can help us do that.
