NEIL HARRIS:

Fatigue, changes?

Fatigue can’t be an excuse. I have to have the foresight to change certain personnel.

Some players will want to go again and prove themselves.

Sometimes you just have to make a couple of changes to freshen it up mentally and physically and the fact we have conceded four goals in two games.

There’s also some players who are knocking on the door.

I need to learn about my group and sometimes you need to play players to learn about them. Especially with the January transfer window coming up

Junior Hoilett?

Tightened up in his hamstring. An accumulation of minutes, asking quite a lot of him and the intensity we are asking of him. An unfortunate one. Bit early to tell, it looks very mild. Certainly not for Elland Road

NEIL HARRIS:

Elland Road, how big a challenge?

I was quite honest with my assessment after the game. I didn’t think we were good enough for an hour the other night. Disappointing but they have to get back to those standards.

These are a top, top side. This year they are there again (top), ultimately they have one of the best squads in the division. You also have to deal with Elland Road. As a player and a manager I love going there. I expect to see a reaction

NEIL HARRIS:

Bielsa’s comments?

It’s a compliment in the sense that he has read the stats and that myself and the team have made an impact we have made over the last few weeks.

‘British team’ is probably identifying the team over the last few seasons. A bit more direct. A bit more up and at ‘em. Which I’m fine with, I like front-foot football.

I don’t think we are quite there as a front-foot team yet because we are still a little bit reactive in what we’re doing.

But that does take time and will take weeks.

I think we have shown quality that we can play. We’ve got good players.

We are still making mistakes with the ball. The turnover the other night was a big problem for us.

As much as I don’t want to accept it, I have to accept we are going to get things slightly wrong. But we are moving in the right direction.

Marcelo has said ‘British-based team’ quite a lot about teams in this division, but it’s the English Championship

NEIL HARRIS:

Chief scout…

There’s been a change to the scouting setup. Some decisions were made before I got here. The club wanted a change of direction in a lot of ways. When you have a new regime it’s an opportunity to change in a lot of ways.

I wish Glyn all the best moving forward. Slight change now with Tim Henderson coming in as head of scouting.

The department will become more analytical as well.

We have to get with the times and with scouting through watching players.

Analytics plays a big part. Stats are huge in terms of recruitment and references on recruitment.

Moving forward I’ll have a big part to play in decision making. It takes a period and you have to get the right person in

Clarity, Tim Henderson stepped up to head scout?

Yep. Tim Henderson is a guy who knows these parts very well. Great experience in what he does in football. He’ll be of real value to us

Glatzel?

Neil Harris:

He’s doing OK. I really like the lad. Getting better all the time in training. Comes into the thinking for tomorrow.

A response?

I expect that, that will be the message to the players. They’ve had a bit of criticism from within and externally. We knew it was going to be a real tough period. First four games, 10 points was a great return. Somewhere along the line there was going to be a dip

NEIL HARRIS:

Leeds seven in a row, promotion?

Leeds and West Brom look like the two best teams. Fulham, on their day, are exceptional. They’ve been the most consistent and that’s what makes it the best challenge and one we can look forward to. Less expectation on our shoulders than normal. Brentford dominated possession the other night in really good areas and what was key was that the possession stats and passes made were identical in both halves. Leeds will have a lot of the ball but what they do is key to them

NEIL HARRIS:

Where to improve?

Against Brentford the organisation was OK. Nowhere near where I want it to be.

Pressing triggers without the ball wasn’t there. You have to be organised and disciplined.

We gave the ball away far too cheaply the other night and it cost us the first goal.

I do have to accept we are going to give the ball away, but it’s the reaction when we give the ball away.

NEIL HARRIS:

Away form

I think that’s obvious. Home form we are the top two or three in the league and we have to continue to focus on that.

Away from home, I’m not necessarily going to judge my players on Elland Road. Forest was an outstanding performance and result.

Brentford, there are parts we still need to improve. It might be getting the right personnel in. Were we too open the other night with two wingers and Tommo? Possibly.

There’s a couple of different systems we would like to play.

I don’t want to change too much too quickly. But we will be ready tomorrow.

Exciting, room for improvement?

We’ve got a transfer window coming up as well. I was very honest after the first four games not to get carried away. We knew there was going to be a dip and get the odd injury or two. There is a lot of learning to be done.

We’ve had so few training sessions because we’ve had so many games. I looked at the team the other night and I thought it was a team that lacked training sessions

NEIL HARRIS:

Read the riot act after Brentford?

I raised my voice at half-time. It’s something you can do. Doing it regularly is not right in the modern game, players don’t always respond.

I just felt, I raised my voice because it was more my reaction from my players. Neil Harris teams don’t normally lose second and third balls, not at Griffin Park. I also calmly spoke about how to improve. I thought Gary’s impact was excellent and if he’s not available tomorrow he’ll be a real loss to us. Ranting, raving and throwing teacups for 15 minutes doesn’t help anyone

NEIL HARRIS:

January thoughts?

All the time. Developing. I’m spending a lot of time with the players and we have to be as proactive as we can in looking at players. January is an extremely tough window.

Most business gets done in the first 5 days or 48 hours. It happens in the last minute because everyone has a panic and pays over the odds. Injury dictates that, personnel who do and don’t want to be here etc

NEIL HARRIS:

Sol Bamba of Cardiff City

Yes. We’ve got Sol on a fitness programme. Nobody wants to get Sol fit quicker than me because of his experience and leadership.

Let’s not forget, Sol for a period of time has shown himself as a quality centre half.

Sol’s been out a long time, we all know that, and when you’ve been out a long time you always have a niggling doubt in the back of your mind.

And I keep saying to him, ‘Look, you’re a really good player, a class player, let’s get you fit.’

We have to make sure he’s ready. When he goes back on that pitch he has to do himself and everybody justice to be at his best.

A lot of Sol’s play over the years has been about his physical side, not just his ability. We have to make sure Sol is as good as possible to get the best out of him.

It won’t be for this weekend. Will it be for Christmas? Sometimes, you just have to throw people in and sort of sink or swim

NEIL HARRIS:

Jazz Richards?

He doesn’t come into the reckoning this weekend, he’s injured. It’s only a slight one in the calf area. It’s a frustration because he was on the bench (against Barnsley), he did the running after the game and worked extremely hard, but got injured.

Came in on Monday, did the warm-up and just felt the area. He’s had a scan it’s only a short-term one. Only seven to 10 days. It rules him out of tomorrow.

It’s a real shame. I’ve been very clear my thoughts on Jazz, I’d like him to have more of an involvement in the group. We have to make sure he’s fit

Gavin Whyte he’s back in the group and comes into the thinking for this weekend.

We’ve had, myself and a couple of staff, some illness within the group and a few players were missing the other day but hopefully that clears up quickly.
