Newcastle United - Free season tickets

Tue Dec 10, 2019 10:38 am

Newcastle are giving free season tickets to season ticket holders - to pass onto family and friends -so they will fill the ground for the rest of the season. Do you think this is a good idea and should we consider it to fill the upper Ninian stand?

How is it fair to the fans that have paid for them. Fans pay for them and fair weathers get to go for free? Nope, horrendous idea.

They should give the weekly tickets to local schools.

Just because they've given them away doesn't mean the seats will be occupied for any given match. May still not turn up anyway though Newcastle don't have perceived embarrassment of announcing 40k gate. Fine for those with a free seat next to them they can "buy" but for most will cause frustration. Its a bad enough exercise for a one off game but for half a season it's a poor stunt and as so often the case the overwhelming majority of loyal fans will see no direct benefit

Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea and Leicester all still to play at home. Newcastle must have serious attendance concerns to embark on this. Surely those four games will sell out even if some of the others won't.

Yes, that’s why I said it.

Season tickets are a great expense and to give them away is wrong. Giving tickets to local schools means a different set of people get the chance to use the tickets each time meaning that season ticket buyers aren’t getting a better deal by not buying one and waiting for a free one.

Giving to local schools means that a different person gets to experience a game each time and season ticket holders still get value for money (ST’s generally work out as 3 free matches, so giving joe bloggs a free match won’t put their nose out of joint).

That’s business, not all will immediately understand so glad I could help.

It doesn’t have to be a new and unique idea, that’s not the brief. The brief is to fill the seats.

Of course it works. And of course it’s (relatively) fair as the custodian of the free ticket isn’t getting a better deal than a season ticket holder. Season ticket holders get on average 3/4 free games due to discounted tickets.

If I paid my rent in advance of £15,000 a year and I heard my neighbour under the same landlord was given 6 months free I’d be fuming. However if my neighbour told me they got to stay for one night to help them out, I’d be more than fine with it.

The art of business is to service new customers while not p*ssing off your current ones. So giving half season tickets away for free will most certainly not fit that bill. Giving free tickets to schools to fill empty seats is not only acceptable to current customers but probably desirable to many who want the ground filled without feeling ripped off.

you do not think Newcastle hope to benefit from this other than temporarily filling seats :o
schools don't fill seats for umpteen reasons , and certainly not 8k 1 off seats 10 times. its a bit naïve mate..well a hell of a lot naïve actually.

Of course they will benefit, that’s why clubs do it.

Every extra person through the gate has value as they have an average spend attached to their heads. It’s not naive at all, it’s business.

Giving away bulk tickets to individuals decreases the probability the seat will be filled as it gives the option to pick and choose which not only decreases match day spend but also alienates current consumer base.

Didn't we have a season when family stand was free for children? If it wasn't free it was very very cheap. Outcome is there is a take up but how often seat is actually occupied is another matter.

It creates an unlevel playing field and is not consistent and fair for hard core paying fan.

Not dissimilar to Sky charging existing customers what they do but consistently offering deals to new and returning customers. It's become a norm in lots of industries but doesn't make it right. Spend more time looking after your bucket so you have to spend less time filling it back up.
