Paterson played 3 positions today.

Sat Nov 23, 2019 9:41 pm

As far as I could tell the formation at the start was a 4-2-3-1 which turned into a 4-4-2 when we conceded the first goal, which turned into a narrow 4-1-2-1-2 for the last half hour. Firstly, it’s a breath of fresh air to see the manager change it and so effortlessly too. Our defence was naturally dodgy, perhaps more than usual today, but that’s purely down to our full backs realising they actually have to defend now, so that may actually be a good thing for someone like Bennet who I assume has previously been instructed to just let the winger Mark the atttacker that’s bennett no doubt naturally probably wants to mark. So hopefully this new tactic works in his favour, as I think it will.

Paterson today played as an advanced midfielder.

He also played striker during that advanced midfield role.

He then played Central midfield alongside Bacuna for the last 30 minutes he was on the pitch.

Fair play when we say he’s a utility/versatile player, he really is. I know I’ve read a lot of people saying he didn’t perform well today, however apart from a couple loose passes I thought he did what he was chosen to do. Fair play to him as far as I’m concerned.

Problem is nobody knows his best position.

I reckon it’s 4th in from the left of the subs bench or in a club suit doing the match hospitality.

He’s a disaster; how he got so many goals 2 seasons ago is baffling. I think it’s one in about 28 games since his winner v Southampton.

It was not a open goal his leg was tripped by the defender and it was a blatent penalty.

He is not a forward player no matter how hard he tries. He seems more suited to a defensive midfield role, would be interesting to see him sat in front of the defence

We all love a trier but he typifies the last 18 months, all effort and strength, with little skill and end product.

My heart sank when i saw he was a starter, He is not an attacking midfielder, and definitely not a central or defensive midfielder as it all happens half a second too quick for him.

He may be a right midfielder in a 441 or its varient, but as a defensive ploy rather than an attacking unless we plan to smack it long all game.

We bought a right back who in Warnocks opinion can't defend, so its probably too late for him to convert to a centre half.

IMO he'll make his living as a L1 or Scottish championship forward.

If we sold him in the transfer window would he get more than a million ?

I know he was an icon for a period 18 months ago, but we are here now.

Saw the incident last night yes a pen no question seeing from a 100yds is bit different from on tv, But my point was he should have attacked ball which you suspect most strikers would have done instead of waiting for ball to come to him then defender wouldn't have been able to get near him to trip him.. he looked slow and ineffective all game. thumbup:

You’ve got terrible judgment of players sometimes.

1. The goal wasn’t open
2. He was fouled as he was about to kick it.

Paterson is exactly the type of player that’s needed to get out of this division.

Big strong puts himself about and can score goals. When he’s 100% fit he’s a knightmare for other teams.

Definitely not a carthorse.

I believe his best position is centre forward. However I would agree he has not looked as fit as he was 2 years ago and when he played the number 9 position in the premership. He would get you the goals but he needs to play upfront.

He's not a striker though! He has his attributes but it will all come down to how NH sets us up going forward if they'll be of any value to us. He has been more effective than Madine up until now, he wins high balls and he can finish. Hopefully we've still to see the best of Madine on both of those fronts

I agree with you that he is a nuisance for defenders but that is about it really. He offers no link up play between the midfield and striker and clearly isn't a natural striker as his movement is poor. He has a few assists and has 2 goals in his last 20 odd appearances. How exactly is he what we need to get out of this division? The only way I see Patterson getting used is if we play long ball to him in the air. Love his passion and effort but if we are to play better passing football then Paterson needs to be replaced with someone with more quality on the ball.
