Wales have just been handed a big boost in their bid to reach Euro 2020

Wales are now guaranteed a place in the play-offs to reach next summer's European Championships.

With tomorrow's crucial clash with Azerbaijan looming, Wales needed one of Austria, Sweden, Bosnia or Denmark to qualify in order to hand them a play-off spot via the UEFA Nations League.

And with Sweden sealing qualification win a win in Romania, Wales now have the fall back of a play-off spot as they bid to reach next years finals.

The top two sides of each group qualify directly for next summer's championship, but the Nations League gives a further 16 teams the chance to progress.


All 16 Nations League group winners have been guaranteed at least a play-off spot, but many of those teams have already qualified, meaning their places have been handed down to the next best ranked side in their league.


Given that the likes of Ukraine and Russia had already secured their place at next year's tournament, Wales have now been handed a spot in the upcoming play-offs, after Sweden dispatched Romania 2-0 on Friday evening.

The news will take off some of the pressure on Ryan Giggs ahead of Saturday's clash in Baku, with the Wales boss in full knowledge that his side will be unable to qualify automatically should they sink to defeat.

The play-offs take place in March next year.

The draw is on 30th nov who we play is probably still undecided as probably a team or two can swap places with the results in next two games? Let's hope we dont need to go
there.. as for automatically qualify if Wales win both games they qualify automatically, if they get 4points they qualify if Slovakia get only two points from both their games left... simples

People complain about Giggs but didn't realise bale/Ramsey haven't played together in quantifying that's a blow to any manager also we haven't had a settled pairing at back as injury means different pairing every game! Let's hope he doesn't do a Hughes and Coleman and defend hoping to snatch a win on break cost us twice those tactics...

And that in reality is a good achievement considering its Giggs 1st qualifying taunement and didn't have much time to bed in players to his tactics! Yes could been better but football is never easy unless playing Malta or Gibraltar ect.

Big well done to Giggs and the team.

Still hopeful we can do it outright but that safety net of a second chance is nice to have and shows that the Nations League does have its merit.

I think Giggs has got a lot more stick because of who he is. If Bellamy has got the job and we played exactly the same and got the same results I'd bet he would have got a lot more credit.

By my calc, if Slovakia beat Croatia, they would have 13 points and one game left against Azerbaijan.

If we fail to beat Hungry, that would leave us 4th.

It's to allow smaller nations to qualify for taunement by having more teams in competition, think at least one small nation like Malta will qualify

However teams who won their nations league group cannot be moved into a higher path so even though someone previously on the thread said we could get Denmark in the playoffs we can't as we're guaranteed to be in path a.
