Why the big rush to appoint a new manager?

Tue Nov 12, 2019 1:50 pm

Warnock has hardly left the building and yet it seems as if an appointment of his successor will be announced in the next few days :o

It's an international break and our next game isn't for 10 days or so. Surely now would be a good time to invite applications from around the country and even abroad and spend some time giving the appointment some serious consideration?

This is a vital appointment for the club - a number of candidates should be identified, considered, interviewed and then a decision which is in the best interests of the club moving forward should be made but instead of that the club seem to be rushing into appointing somebody, anybody as quickly as they can.

Whoever comes in cannot change the playing staff until January so even if the right man was not appointed for three or four weeks they would have plenty of time to assess what they need in January.

The important thing is to get "the right man". In appointing somebody so quickly how can the club be said to have considered the best possible candidate to move the club forward? Have they actually advertised the job or made any attempt to see who might be interested?

I'm afraid I have little confidence in the way the owner and his sidekicks are approaching this recruitment. I cannot understand this race to get a manager in place so quickly.

I agree, take a breathe and see who appears...or who is recommended.. even what the fans are thinking, you might think of someone tomorrow you had not considered today...

Maybe they've been planning for this moment as it was a realistic chance NW would go before xmas! Other clubs have looked at candidates when in similar circumstances., so whos to say Houghton ect said didnt want job if it was vacant leaving us with the mentioned candidates? But agree got time to think about things and what they want going forward but looks like be in before Saturday ...

Agreed.

Bowyer, Gerrard, Harris, Lampard all given their first starts by clubs in management , and has mostly gone well. So, Bellamy, one of our own, given his first start in his career by us, as caretaker until seasons end for me.

But yes, what’s the rush? Let’s take our time, seek advice , speak to our fan base, line up more interviews, monitor candidates , while we have a young caretaker hopefully taking his chance.

maybe...but you have to ask permission to talk to under contract managers... which narrows the field somewhat...
the 3 mentioned do seem cheap options in that one is unattached and the other 2s clubs wouldn't be asking big compensation packages..

thus, especially considering we all knew NW would retire in may. I'd imagine we have been planning for this since NW announced he'd be retiring. Which would also explaine why flynn was spotted at the game on sunday and this immediate candidate shortlist

Agree with this, get him in asap.More time to prepare. If they haven't appointed someone by the weekend there'll be about 50 threads on here moaning about City dithering and cursing Mr Tan again.

A bit optimistic with the weekend bit. I give until about 9pm tonight, and if we are not top of the table by xmas, those 50 threads will be wanting to sack him.

If there such a desperate need to get someone in straight away then they can only be looking at somebody who is currently out of work. Somebody who is not working at a club who would need to be approached, permission asked and compensation paid.

All of which points to Harris (although both Mourinho and Wenger both qualify  )

Just has the same stench of cheapness and desperation that surrounded the appointment of Slade.

If we've been seriously looking for a replacement manager since May and the best we've been able to come up with are Flynn, Bowyer and Neil Harris then our problems are bigger than we thought.

trouble with this year in advance theory is..it means your looking for someone out of work that your confident will still be out of work in a years time.. or managers in work that your pretty confident will not attract other clubs during the next year.

Because We Need The New Manager To Get To Know Players, Staff, The Board And The Fans Before The Charlton Game. If We Have No Manager When Our Game Turns Up Then We Will Be In Trouble. The Players Need Guidance And Strength To Get To Charlton Aiming For Nothing Less Than 3 Points.
