GARY MADINE: ONE LAST CHANCE CITY LIFELINE?

What on earth is happening with Cardiff City's Gary Madine as forgotten man faces crunch career point
By Glen Williams

The forward could yet be handed an unlikely lifeline

The question of ‘Where is Gary Madine?’ has become far more pertinent ahead of the visit of Bristol City this Sunday.

The striker was signed for £6m from Bolton back in January 2018 and, 22 months and 21 games later, is still without a single Cardiff City goal to his name.

Following Kenneth Zohore’s £8m switch to West Brom this summer, there was suddenly a glimmer of hope for Madine, who, before the season had started, looked to be surplus to requirements.

He was handed a start in the 3-2 opening-day defeat at Wigan and once again failed to score. Robert Glatzel was brought in and Madine not been seen since. Well, barring a cameo appearance in the 3-0 Carabao Cup drubbing against Luton Town.

His situation in the Welsh capital is a curious one.

It is no secret that Warnock was trying to find a club for Madine in the summer, however the right suitor could not be found for a number of reasons, wage expectations being one.

He has largely been consigned to the under-23s this season, sporadically popping up with the odd goal.

But, somewhat understandably for players who have years of first-team experience, that quasi-competitive level of football cannot be helpful, for morale nor their game in general.

This Sunday, however, that could all change.

Glatzel is likely to be out against Bristol City, as is Isaac Vassell with his torn quad, and Danny Ward will be suspended following his red card against Birmingham City last Saturday.

It means Warnock will likely have to pump for one of Omar Bogle, Madine, or even Callum Paterson up front.

Either way, his involvement at least in the match-day squad appears likely.

But you feel chances are running out for the 29-year-old.

If he is lucky, he could have one, maybe two games left in his Cardiff City career, unless he proves himself worthy in those fleeting appearances.

Otherwise, come January, he is likely to be seeking pastures new.

He'll be on the bench at most

Although it has not happened for him here

In reality he is our best striker, he just needs a kickstart

If he wants a move he has 2 months to prove himself

He will probably be on the bench. I would imagine Bogle is going to start so we'll probably only see Madine if Bogle get's injured or if we are chasing the game and need to go even more direct. I do feel sorry for him. He is better suited to the way we play than Glatzel but hasn't been given a decent run of games like Glatzel has. All our strikers struggle because of the way we play.

I said when we signed him I didn't think he was a Warnock type character, which seems to be the case. I think that Penalty miss killed him off for some fans and then the open goal miss at Derby (I think) didn't help.

personally I don't think he is that bad, certainly not a 6m striker but he must have something to offer, helped Sheffield United get promoted last season.

Id have rathered we didn't sign Vassell and gave Medine more of a chance.

yes but it could have gone the other way as it did when we sold Nathan Blake. the add on was only if we won promotion which was far from clear we would when we signed him having won just once the previous six..

Feel sorry for him ,he seems to have it all ,a goal scoring record with other clubs ,big strong physical guy ,etc ,but it just hasn't worked here for some reason ,move on ,maybe drop down a league .
One thing is for sure we won't be getting our money back on him

he isn't quick enough to be the target man and then having knocked it off get into a scoring position. but purely as a target man is as good as anyone we have if not better...
the amount of stick he has taken. well if it was me I just wouldn't want to be here. way way OTT.

i dont disagree with you but its proportional to the impact he should be having considering not only his price tag but his wages imo.

If he cost us 1m and 5k a week no one would really care.

its not a popular view but he was bought for that extra push for promotion...
he arrived when we were on a run of one win in 6 and we then went on a run of 9 wins and 2 draws..
im not for one minute suggesting he was great or single handedly won us promotion . but the transfer worked, he did take pressure off Zohore, he did win ball and did bother most defenders at this level , its was the same as what he did last year at Sheffield..
definitely too much money but that's how football is.

he is just among the other players who never play for us such as Jazz Richards and Matthew Connolly.

If Gary Madine is the answer then I don't know what the question is.

Some say our best striker and some say give him a chance. NW must see him in training,so either he cant cut it or has a bad attitude or maybe both.

Hope he goes very soon

Before he signed for City he had scored 1 goal every 4 games or so (mostly in the bottom two divisions). At £6m he was vastly over-priced. At City he has played 603 mins without scoring. Cornelius, on the other hand who has been castigated by some, despite being injured for 4 of his 6 months at City only played 107 mins. Now could you imagine what Tan would be saying had Malky signed him.

Not once put in a performance worthy of his fee even at 2 million

Can't see why people stick Matt Connelly in the same bracket as Jazz as although he injured now Matt has been a good servant to this club.

If you are looking to get a striker to take his chances tomorrow ( and that is what they are paid for) then it is 1, Paterson , 2, Bogle, 3 Glatzel ( if fit) , 4 Madine. So if you want to win the game Madine does not start.
