Sol Bamba's emotional thank you to Cardiff City fans after deafening Birmingham City reception

Monday 4th November 2019

The Bluebirds defender had been out of action since undergoing a knee operation back in March

The road back to Cardiff City Stadium has been gruelling for Sol Bamba, but, on Saturday afternoon, it was all worth it.

Back in March, the 34-year-old sustained a horrific ACL injury and had to undergo surgery and the prospect of playing again was merely a distant goal.

The Ivorian replaced Curtis Nelson with 85 minutes on the clock and Cardiff City Stadium rose to its feet. With the game still relatively finely balanced at that point at 3-1, Bamba responded to the Canton Stand's request with a big Ayatollah.

It was a visibly emotional moment for the centre-back and he expressed his gratitude to the Bluebirds faithful in a heartfelt Twitter post.

"Happy to be back but more importantly with a big win, and looking forward for the next games already," he wrote. "Thank you for everything.

"I never doubted your love but it was very special for me to come back yesterday and receive such a warm welcome.

"It's always been an immense honour to be part of this club, and today there are very few words to express how much your everlasting support means to me."

In a post-match interview with Cardiff's in-house media team, Bamba revealed he almost cried such was the emotion he felt during the raucous reception.

"I feel unbelievable," he said. "The fans, I can't thank them enough.

"I nearly cried. Honestly, this club means a lot to me."

Judging by Saturday's reception, he means a lot to this club, too.

Bamba could still have a massive part to play in this Championship campaign, with 31 games still left to play in this marathon season.

While he might not yet be back fully firing, a Bamba somewhere near his best could be exactly what this Cardiff City side needs.

Love Bamba, has to go down as one of the best signings the clubs has made for me.

Based on what? A few nice words?
Although would like him to be given a chance with the youth teams for a few years to see if he is a potential future manager.

Just believe he is nailed on to take over in the near future, it's the perfect job for him and probably the perfect guy for us

Bamba is a class act and he obviously loves the club. Would be a massive gamble to make him our manager though. He should at least get involved with coaching and the youth setup before even being considered. Nice guy but might be useless as a manager. OGS springs to mind. Personally I’d prefer someone with more experience and prem connections to take over.

Totally agree, I really don't think he need someone with at least some experience although I would love him to stay within the club.

I agree. Sol has way more about him than OGS mind. Too early for him to be next manager for us but needs to be found a role in next set up.
