Stoke sack Nathan Jones

9 months in charge, is that really long enough to turn a club around?

Stoke City have sacked manager Nathan Jones after just nine months in charge of the Championship club.

Friday 1st November 2019

Welshman Jones, 46, was brought in from then League One Luton Town in January to replace the sacked Gary Rowett.

But Stoke have won six times in 38 games under Jones and, despite back-to-back wins in mid-October, Saturday's defeat by Rowett's Millwall left the Potters four points adrift of safety.

Stoke, who face leaders West Bromwich Albion next, are 23rd in the table.

But the Potters could be back on the bottom by the time they play that game on Monday as Barnsley, who are level with them on eight points, face Bristol City at home on Friday.

Assistant manager Paul Hart and first team coach Joaquin Gomez have also left the bet365 Stadium with Rory Delap, Kevin Russell and Andy Quy taking charge of the first team while a new manager is sought "as swiftly as possible".

"I would like to thank John and Peter Coates, firstly for the opportunity to manage this football club and then for the continued support and patience throughout my time here," Jones said.

"I would also like to thank the supporters for their fantastic support. Finally, I wish the club the very best for the future."

Jones enjoyed huge success at Luton, winning more than half his games in charge of the Hatters.

But he failed to arrest a decline at Stoke that was set in motion while Mark Hughes was still manager - and then included relegation from the Premier League in 2018.

Hard gig seeing the free fall they seemed to be in. 9 months not long enough to change things.

is 9 months long enough ?

they have lost 10 games mate..
cant believe anyone on here is asking that , our fans would have wanted him gone in August.
80% of our fans want to sack a manager that's already won us a promotion after losing FOUR..

Havent they won just 6 games in 38 with him in charge? :o if going to get rid it's now so anyone got time to organise and get in players in January! leave it to late and teams are in big trouble... will NW feel time to step down if lose next two? Not that we're in trouble of relegation just need a change to have chance to push on rest season?

Unless there is any previous history I would bet Warnock wouldn't mind that job, he likes to fix things and go in being the underdog (which we did brilliantly for us).

Good manager but seriously question his thought process behind taking the Stoke job. Was almost certain to go up with Luton and Stoke will be in league 2 within years at their current rate.

Also not hugely fussed on people who bring their religion into the workplace

Agreed, why leave a Club with one foot in the championship,I know it’s more money bigger Club etc,but there was always a safer bet awaiting.

Stoke have far more potential than Luton. He could have ended up in the Prem.

Not one to sack a manager too soon but his record is terrible and he has had a pre season to sort things out. Surprised Stoke have given them as long as they have. What they need now is a very experienced manager who has got teams promoted and saved teams from relegation at this level.

Writing On The Wall Next To The Trap Door To League 1. Cant Imagine Stoke In League 1 But They Simply Are Not Good Enough Regardless Of Who Comes In As Manager.

Sean, full of good players Stoke.

I’d love Joe Allen here.

Interesting that he didn't mention the players in his statement.

Perhaps he feels let down by the players or maybe they weren't doing what he wanted them to.

Never underestimate the role that the players can have in making or breaking a manager and there are some very talented players in that Stoke squad.

I would not be at all surprised to see their results improve greatly under a new manager (depending who it is of course!)

He's the sort of manager Cardiff need to look at bringing in to the club. Ok it didn't work out for him at Stoke. He will come good again somewhere. Hope it's with us!
