An injury update on Curtis Nelson and Sol Bamba

NEIL WARNOCK:

Curtis has been unlucky and Sol’s been busy getting back to fitness.

We’ve always been told November and that game for the under-23s did him the world of good.

There’s still parts of Sol’s game that he needs to brush up on, but it’s good to have him back into the squad really because we do have quite a lot of injury problems at the minute.

NEIL WARNOCK:

The latest on Junior Hoilett and Lee Tomlin

There’s not much light at the moment with Tomlin. He’s had an injection and although there’s nothing untoward on the scan he’s not feeling right.

He hasn’t trained now for the best part of 10 days, so it’s difficult because he was going to be a big part against Swansea and this weekend.

But we’ve just got to get on with it.

Junior did some light training yesterday. He’s still got a bit of fluid there, but there’s no tear as such. Hopefully another few days will bring him back into contention.

About Birmingham City

Birmingham City Football Club is a professional football club in Birmingham, England. Formed in 1875 as Small Heath Alliance, it was renamed Small Heath in 1888, Birmingham in 1905, and Birmingham City in 1943. Since 2011, the first team have competed in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football.

As Small Heath, they played in the Football Alliance before becoming founder members and first champions of the Football League Second Division. The most successful period in their history was in the 1950s and early 1960s. They achieved their highest finishing position of sixth in the First Division in the 1955–56 season and reached the 1956 FA Cup Final. Birmingham played in two Inter-Cities Fairs Cup finals, in 1960, as the first English club side to reach a major European final, and again the following year. They won the League Cup in 1963 and again in 2011. Birmingham have played in the top tier of English football for around half of their history: the longest period spent outside the top division, between 1986 and 2002, included two brief spells in the third tier of English football, during which time they won the Football League Trophy twice.

St Andrew's has been their home ground since 1906. They have a long-standing and fierce rivalry with Aston Villa, their nearest neighbours, with whom they play the Second City derby. The club's nickname is Blues, after the colour of their kit, and the fans are known as Bluenoses.

Previous Meeting

We last played Birmingham in March 2018. The Championship fixture at Cardiff City Stadium finished in a 3-2 win for us. First half goals from Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Craig Bryson and Callum Paterson gave us a comfortable lead at half time, before the visitors got two second half goals through Craig Gardner and Maxime Colin.

Need a big response with this game and nothing less than 3 points. Another gutless performance like yesterday and I think the crowd will turn quite quickly.

I predict a reaction with a win, if not i dread we might hear a few boo' s at the final whistle which would be understandable concidering what neil said about this coming season and our big push for promotion.

The team quoted is always the last team that played because it’s a predicted side as nobody knows who the starting 11 is.

Hoilett has a hamstring injury so he won’t start on Saturday. Not sure what Tomlins injury is.

I think we’ll bounce back and give a reaction after our last game.

We just have to keep picking up points and see where it takes us.

Birmingham City Fc

Thursday 31st October 2019

Blues' 2-1 success against Luton Town at the weekend was their third successive league victory at the St. Andrew's Trillion Trophy Stadium.

And it was the Blues striker who headed home the winning goal late on against The Hatters, to bag his fourth goal of the campaign.

"It’s important to make sure your home form is good," he said.

"We’ve had three home wins on the bounce now.

"It is certainly a positive and we’ve created a lot more chances than we have previously and hopefully we can start picking up more points away from home but it’s a start, for sure."

Once again Blues dominated their opponents on home turf and the margin of the victory could easily have been greater than a single goal, with no less than 21 attempts on goal.

"Their 'keeper made some fantastic saves. Credit to him," continued Jutkiewicz.

"From the outside, you don’t see the work that has gone into it.

"It doesn’t just happen overnight. It is something we have to work on in training and will have to continue to work on because we are nowhere near where we want to be.

"We’ve got a lot of things to iron out, but it is certainly positive, and we are enjoying how we are playing at the moment.

"Some of the skills in these players are superb. You look at Dan (Crowley), Fran (Villalba) and Kerim (Mrabti) and these livewires who have got a phenomenal touch and technique.

"Obviously, I have to try and do my side of it, be the battering ram for them, and let them showcase their talent, which they are doing."

Blues' latest victory took their points tally to 22 from their 14 league games.

Although they remain in 11th spot, they are just two points off Preston North End who are in second place and five shy of leaders West Bromwich Albion.

"It’s a crazy league when you think we are 11th but only three points off second place," said the striker.

"No-one seems able to take a firm hold of it.

"It’s good to be amongst it. There will be many teams feeling the same way.

"Whilst we’ve picked up a decent points total, there are plenty of others who have done the same, so it is anyone’s at the moment.

"We just have to keep picking up points and see where it takes us."

The Bluebirds are preparing to make late calls on both Junior Hoilett and Lee Tomlin this morning.

The duo were key in City's improved performance at Millwall last week and their absence was telling in last weekend's derby defeat.

Tomlin has had an injection in his hip and has not been feeling 100 percent this week, while there is thought to still be some fluid in Hoilett's hamstring, which could keep him sidelined.

Sol Bamba, meanwhile, is set to be included in the match-day squad, but given his long road back to fitness, a place on the bench is the most likely spot for him.

His centre-back partner in the under 23s' win over Crystal Palace on Monday, Curtis Nelson, however, has impressed and will also be in contention to start today's match, having been a permanent fixture on the bench so far this season.

Robert Glatzel will also be a big loss, having sustained a hamstring injury against Swansea last weekend which is likely to keep him sidelined for a number of weeks, so Danny Ward should lead the line.

Jazz Richards is nearing full fitness, however following advice from the club doctors after Monday night's under-23s game, he won't be risked today.

Isaac Vassell is still a long-term absentee, so won't be considered for selection either.
