Brexit news latest: EU 'to grant three-month Brexit extension if Boris Johnson fails to get deal through Commons this week'

BBC

Tuesday 22nd October 2019,

The European Union will delay Brexit until February 2020 if Boris Johnson is unable to get his deal past MPs this week, according to reports.

Diplomatic sources quoted by The Times said a delay would be "fungible" - meaning Britain could leave on select earlier dates if the PM's deal is ratified by then.

A decision on granting an extension to the October 31 deadline will not be made until EU governments have assessed the chances of the deal getting through Parliament before Tuesday this week, according to the publication.

Its sources said the EU’s most likely option is to decide that the three-month extension in the Benn act - until January 31 2020 - is a purely “technical extension”.

Meanwhile, EU diplomats and officials said on Sunday that, depending on the next developments in London, extension options range from just an additional month until the end of November to half a year or longer.

It comes after the Prime Minister was required by law to ask the EU for an extension after MPs voted in favour of Sir Oliver Letwin's amendment in the Commons yesterday.

But in a move which sparked a major backlash, Boris Johnson got a senior diplomat to send an unsigned photocopy of a letter asking for an extension.

Meanwhile, Michael Gove insisted earlier on Sunday that Britain would leave the EU by Halloween.

Mr Gove told Sky News's Sophy Ridge On Sunday: "We are going to leave by October 31st. We have the means and the ability to do so and people who - yesterday we had some people who voted for delay, voted explicitly to try to frustrate this process and to drag it out.

"I think actually the mood in the country is clear and the Prime Minister's determination is absolute and I am with him in this, we must leave by October 31st."

The Chancellor to the Duchy of Lancaster said the Government will trigger Operation Yellowhamer, their contingency plan to handle a no-deal Brexit.

Annis I honestly believe that there are too many MPs with EU interest's and will stop BrExit at any cost.

i dont know many people who are against brexit who say "i just want it over with, lets leave"

most are happy for this to drag out to show what an unobtainable fantasy brexit was to begin with

Its only unobtainable because some MPs don't want it? If they did we would be out

What I find ironic is that yesterday John Bercow says that the house of commons cannot have a second debate and vote on the EU deal - that they voted on on Saturday afternoon.

And yet that is exactly that those on the remain side want - a second vote on a debate / referendum that has already been had :sleepy2:

It’s entertaining at least that idiot the speaker is a right joker.

Labour don’t want an Election cause they know they’ll lose it. At least Johnson is trying to get it done. They’ve all had over 3 yrs talking about it. I hope some EU countries refuse another extension that will put the cat amongst the pigeons.

They can get the Benn act through in 2 days hmm something smells fishy.

Let's face it, it's never going to happen.

thats not it at all though, the reason they arent having a second debate on the motion is because it hasn't significantly changed.

since the referendum nearly EVERY promise made by the 'leave side' has been proven to be false or has been amended. that is why people want a second vote. not comparable

The question in 2016 was leave or remain. The question (if put) will be leave with a deal or leave without a deal or remain.

Basically the question is the same - just this time with 3 outcomes rather than 2. To me - that is not a great deal of difference. And put in Parliamentary parlance - it's the same thing , under the rules cant be debated on / voted on again - according to Bercows interpretation anyway.

I'm neither one or the other - I can see the arguments on both sides. Would I do perceive though is one side doing everything possible to block Brexit, with the help of Bercow. And the other side running out of options - until basically they go on strike and just sit there and do nothing.

Corbyn needs to agree to a general election now - and then hopefully we can 'let the people' decide by means of who they want to run the country. Johnson / Corbyn or the Lib Dems - and if they have a majority - way you go, do what you want re Brexit. Lib Dems would ignore it , Conservatives would implement it and Labour would...(not quite sure what they would do)

Interesting times that's for sure

Sometimes it's worth doing some research instead of believing the press. Interesting checking out Jo Swinson, a devout remainer as is her party. Easy enough to find out who her husband is, which company he is a director of, and where that company gets some of it's many grants from. ;)

You watch. If, probably when this all goes tits up this week, Labour will suddenly go all pro Brexit again. It wasn't us gov, it was all his fault. But leavers have their measure now. Brexit is for life, not just for elections.

Anyway off to Millwall and a couple of pints down Borough market on the way.
