An England fan died in Bulgarian police custody amid allegations from officers that he had been behaving "aggressively, raging and threatening" in hospital ahead of the Euro 2020 qualifier.
The 32-year-old had apparently been taken in for treatment after being discovered "helpless" by officers who found him in a Sofia park at 10am on Monday.
A local police spokeswoman told the Daily Telegraph she "cannot confirm" local reports that the man may have taken drugs. "He was found in a helpless condition," she said.
On Monday night the Foreign Office said it was liaising with with the dead man's family in the UK. British police counterparts were also working with Bulgarian officers to establish the exact cause of death.
According to local officers, the man was immediately taken to hospital from Borisova Gardens. The Bulgarian Ministry of Interior later released a statement to "clarify the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident that took place in the capital".
"At 10 o'clock the police received a signal for a man in a helpless condition in the area of Ivan Vazov and GS streets Rakovski.
"The 32-year-old man, found as a foreign national, was found by an ambulance team in a hospital. There he suddenly began to act aggressively, raging and threatening. Action has been taken to transport it to the Sofia Police Department. On the way, the man died. The work to clarify the circumstances of the incident continues under the supervision of the prosecution."
The FCO said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died following an incident in Sofia, and our staff are in contact with the UK and Bulgarian authorities."
There were an estimated 3,400 England fans for the match which came just three days after 14 England supporters were arrested amid clashes with police in Prague prior to Friday’s defeat by Czech Republic..

An England fan in Bulgaria for the Euro 2020 qualifier has died after being discovered in a "helpless" condition in Sofia. Local police told the Daily Telegraph that the 32-year-old died in hospital after being discovered at 10am on Monday in the city centre.
British counterparts are understood to be working with local officers to attempt to contact the man's family. The death was confirmed in the afternoon and is unrelated to an apparent attack by locals on an England supporter, who was left with a broken arm.
A spokeswoman for the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior said of the death: "The incident took place at 10am today. He is a British citizen, 32 years old, at 10am and he was taken to hospital but he has died and the police are now working to clarify all the circumstances."
The spokeswoman said she "cannot confirm" local reports that the man may have taken drugs. "He was found at the centre of the city, in the street," she said. "He was found in a helpless condition."
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it was unable to verify the death, but confirmed another man had been injured in a separate incident.
“Our staff are supporting a British man following an incident in Sofia and are in contact with the Bulgarian Police," the FCO said.
The incident comes just days after England supporters clashed with police in Prague prior to Friday’s defeat by Czech Republic.
There was further trouble in the build-up to the game when a fight broke out in a bar England fans had taken over since arriving in Sofia.
A chair was thrown and bottles smashed before police moved in to restrain one man before another was led away, bloodied, with his right wrist wrapped in an England scarf. It was unclear whether the assailant was local or a travelling supporter.
