I prefer Etheridge however Smithies is about the same height.

In fact he's about the same dap as off the top of my head Arizabalaga, Ederson, Hugo Lloris, Tom Heaton, Jordan Pickford, Kasper and Ryan at the, 6ft, 1/2 Mark so no idea where this comes from

Better distribution
Better catching
Better kicking
Great at penalties
Better one on one
More experianced at a high level

The only thing that can be argued for Etheridge is hes a slightly better shot stopper.

The defence has settled down and I would expect Smithies to keep his place now for the rest of the season

"The Defence has settled down"? we conceded 4 last game lol. Like the majority here I think Etheridge is better at catching, and one on one situations as well as calming our back 4 down and having a calming presence which I feel Smithies doesn't offer as much, however I think Smithies is a decent Gk but I don't think we'll agree on who's better

I actually reckon Warnock might start with Etheridge against Sheffield Wednesday. Maybe I am being a bit harsh but I feel Smithies concedes too many goals from outside the box/ Long distance and wonder could he have done better or Etheridge probably would have saved that, but I guess we'll see in the coming weeks who he goes with.

I agree with you BW as I'm sure Etheridge wouldn't have conceded 4 against WBA.

Whilst Smithies is okay and deserved his place, it's now time for Etheridge to come back in and shore up our porous defence so far this season. Also I cant remember Smithies saving a penalty as I thought they both hit the post this season, and how the hell is Smithies more experienced or better on one to one ?
Surely you are on a wind up and if you aren't then you are no ,longer the font of all knowledge here

As for your analysis thomasblue I'm not sure you know your head from your elbow regarding football.

Really ok let me explain because you're not the sharpest guy on here.

Etheridge 160 games in 11 years,80 of those games at league 1 or lower and 7 of those years spent warming the bench. Etheridge has played more games for us in his short spell here than he has played in the whole of his career.

Smithies 400 games over 11 years all at championship level. Enough said on the experience point.

Our porous defence has the 4th most clean sheets in the league as does our Keeper.

Smithies is well known as a penalty saver over the last decade he has 21 penalty saves which is very high

I cant really be arsed dragging any more stats out , I've made my point.

If it wasnt for Smithies west Brom would have scored 8. It's just like me sayin I'm sure Smithies wouldnt have conceded most of the goals etheridge did last season. It's a pointless arguement

Sorry, Smithies gets beaten too often by shots from outside the box which don't even find the corner of the net. He's a better than average championship keeper and a good back up to Etheridge.
IMHO Etheridge is the better keeper by some margin. After conceding 4 against West Brom it gives Warnock the perfect opportunity to bring back our number one. I'm not saying that Smithies was at fault for the goals but that's how it works sometimes.

I think he’s referring to the ‘defence settling down’ after conceding 4...

An invitation for lampoonery thomas..

All I've done is give my opinion and it's the same opinion as most here that Etheridge is better than Smithies. I wouldn't be suprised to see Etheridge back in goals for the Sheffield Wednesday game.
And btw I think Smithies is a good keeper, but not in Etheridges class.
