Cardiff City's on-loan full-back Greg Cunningham has revealed he is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after scans revealed he has picked up a torn anterior cruciate ligament injury.
The Irishman, who's currently on loan at Blackburn Rovers, confirmed the news on his official Twitter account, and says he will be out for "a number of months" after picking up the injury during the 4-2 defeat at QPR.
He wrote: "Gutted to say I’ve received the results of my scan from the knee injury I sustained at the weekend and unfortunately I’ll be out for a number of months with a torn ACL.
"After taking a few days to process this, I’m now looking forward to the first stages of my recovery."
The 28-year old has gained some admirers in the north west this season; indeed he has arguably been one of Rovers' best performers.
His absence will be keenly felt at Ewood Park, but the news will also come as a big potential blow to boss Neil Warnock, who is currently now one injury away from a major issue at left-back.
Cardiff City placed a recall clause in his season-long loan contract at Rovers and had the option of bringing him back to the Welsh capital early should they please.
However, it seems that he is now longer a potential option.
Ahead of this season, City boss Warnock understandably afforded Cunningham the opportunity to go out and play first-team football.
When the defender was signed back in 2018, he looked to have been an extremely solid acquisition.
But Joe Bennett was irreplaceable at left-back during City's foray in the Premier League. Warnock rightly anointed him the nailed-on first choice in that position, but it left Cunningham, who came with a brilliant reputation following his time at Preston, a little in the dark.
It is yet to be seen what happens should Bennett fall foul of injury.
There is 21-year-old Ciaron Brown, who last month earned his first cap for Northern Ireland, but he has just one senior appearance under his belt.

It's amazing how we have gone into a season with no cover for either full back position .
If bennett gets Injured or suspended who would play in that position ?
Probably have to drop Bacuna or Ralls in to cover.

It was difficult to judge in that EFL cup game, but on the face of it I wouldn’t mind giving young Brown a go if necessary, even if he is essentially a centre back. I’d also be happy enough if Coxe had to come in at right back. They’re good enough to at least be given a chance

No biggie, give Brown a go. Cunningham was obviously dispensable. Youngsters should get their chance in times of need, thats how they get experience

A very overstated title!! Yes a minor blow but I’m very unsure how this can be considered to be a huge blow given the player is out on loan? Someone’s fishing

So another Sir Neil multi million pound misfit won't be seen in ccfc first team colours for a while. Just another one for the list. Plus point is another club is paying his wage; and hopefully all of it. Don't see this as a huge blow.
