QPR manager Mark Warburton told BBC Radio London: "Am I wro

Thu Oct 03, 2019 5:54 am

QPR manager Mark Warburton told BBC Radio London:

"Am I wrong to say we played some really good football tonight? We had some very good open chances, hitting the bar and the post.

"You've got to put the ball in the back of the net, there's no excuses. But it's a difficult message to the players as for long, long periods tonight we were very good.

"Without appearing naive, we knew what to expect and we knew Cardiff possessed that real physicality and we know we have to deal with it.

"But I'm more frustrated that we've given away a soft free-kick tonight in the build-up to their first goal and we feel like we've had our pocket picked by falling 2-0 behind just before half-time."

Can't argue with that.

He's not wrong

If you re ran game and took goals out youd have said QPR won it

Maybe he should have added to that ‘my players fell over too easy tho’.

Especially that little midget on their left wing.
First from Morrison then when Paterson stood up to him on the touchline second half he threw himself over Like he’d been shot!
Hilarious!

When Warburton was Rangers manager he talked a good game, all about pitch geography  but we’d spend 90minutes passing square in front of the opposition box, loads of possession no goals. In Scotland the opposition quickly worked out how to play against us, simply pack defence then hit on the break, ultimately there’s only one stat that matters

If, buts and maybe's. My take is NW completely outsmarted Mark Warburton with a brilliant tactical game. Hitting the bar and post gets you the square sum of f**k all and even if they had scored those 2 we got 3 and would have still won!

Football is about putting the ball in the net and finally we are waking up to that!

“Smash and grab”seems a monotonous excuse being used by managers who can’t get a result!
WPR for all their possession were toothless in attack, predictable and offered little in Cardiff’s half.
Physicality is an attribute which any teams defence should have in their armoury but attacking I thought Cardiff were clinical and took their chances while comfortably soaking up QPR’s possession and their only real chances were a shot from distance and two one on ones when their attack show how average they were!

When we do well but don't score people are keen to criticise but are happy to talk up opposition that do the same. I was happy to win against a team that was very keen to fall at every opportunity to kid a ref that I think was the worst and weakest we have had all season. His lack of control in what wasn't a difficult game to ref contributed to the handbags when Paterson had the nerve to have the ball kicked out of his hands by that little upstart who then threw himself on the floor

The other term that I hear used sometimes about good teams is that they win even when they aren't playing well. Let's be more positive and credit Warnock and our terms with decent tactical nous and a disciplined performance taking our chances when they came

He should try playing winning football like Warnock an sit down and shut up.

Which is what the clowns paid for. If it had been losing by the odd goal you could take him a bit more seriously but 3-0 is a tanking.

QPR boss Mark Warburton offers less-than-flattering assessment of 'smash-and-grab' Cardiff City

Thursday 3rd October 2019

The manager was furious after his side's 3-0 defeat by the Bluebirds in the Welsh capital

QPR boss Mark Warburton cut a frustrated figure as he sat down for his post-match press conference at Cardiff City Stadium.

Warburton was reeling having just watched his side lose 3-0 to the Bluebirds in a head scratcher of a Championship clash.

The visitors enjoyed the lion's share of possession and territory, but Cardiff's defence remained resolute and their attack proved clinical.

Warburton said, as many managers have this season, that they knew the physicality, directness and style of play City would bring to the encounter.

But the Hoops just could not keep City out as goals from Sean Morrison, Marlon Pack and Callum Paterson consigned the visitors to a hefty defeat.

Despite losing by a fairly sizeable three-goal margin, however, Warburton curiously branded the Bluebirds' win a 'smash and grab'.

"We knew the threat Cardiff would pose," Warburton said after the match.

"I'm never disrespectful in terms of how teams play, you play to your strengths and Cardiff are very good at what they do. We spoke about set pieces and the threat of (Aden) Flint, Morrison, Paterson and (Robert) Glatzel and to concede like that.

"I thought we played well, hit the post and created chances. I thought we looked very good and then the sucker punch, you feel like you have your pocket picked just before half-time.

"At 2-0 I still felt if we scored the next goal we were in this, because we can play. We controlled the second half, looked good, hit the bar, had three massive chances where you've got to put the ball in the back of the net and that's the harsh reality.

"If you don't get your rewards then you pay the price. And tonight, it felt like a smash and grab if I'm honest."

It is a frank assessment of a game in which QPR, for large parts, were the dominant side.

Cardiff have struggled to find the back of the net with regularity this season, but it finally seemed to click for them in front of goal in a strange role reversal for the two teams.

But, once again, despite the scoreline, Warburton felt the result was unjust.

"If you come to any ground, home or away, play poorly and lose 3-0 you get what you deserve," he added. "Simple as that.

"Tonight, we didn't get what we deserve. But that's football. Everyone has seen that.

"If we play like that every time, we'll have more good days than bad."

He might not be wrong.... but i dont buy into this "we deserved x" nonsense.

Look at all three goals in isolation from their point, and the defending was terrible. Flint had got in once before at the back post, so they had their warning and did nothing about it.

Then the slack defending to leave first Whyte free, then Pack with no one on him 6 yards out.

Its easy to scream and shout about what you deserved and how well you might have played, but if you cant defend you wont win many matches.

100% agree with you Paulh.

You get what you deserve, I don't believe in luck, you earn your luck and early your right to a win :thumbright: :bluebird:

A bit of a west London thing here. QPR,Fulham and Brentford appear to think the game is based upon ball retention stats.

The game is about balance. Some lovely little footballers in those teams, but they struggle to defend. We defend the "nil" first then try to score a goal.

3-0 down with ten mins to go and they were tossing around with the GK to CD to FB then to the DCM only to tap it back to the GK.......If if floats your boat, great. Although our lack of craft last night was almost embarrassing, but that is soon forgotten with 3 point and a plus 3 goals in our Goal Difference figure

Whilst I agree that the score flattered us and we couldn't have complained if they had got a draw, let's not fall for this possession = dominance rubbish. At one time in the second half they had the ball for over a minute, in which time they managed to get the ball from just outside our penalty area to their own goalkeeper. And they were two down at the time. That demonstrates to me a side with no cutting edge up against a side which is controlling the game. And yet the stat fanatics will see this type of possession as evidence of them being the better side.

Apparently they had 74% of the possession. Well done to them. We had 100% of the goals. I think I know which % I prefer. :occasion5:

Same, possession means sweet f**k all if you're just passing it side to side and backwards

The score was 3-0 not 1-0, therefore they let in 3 goals.

1 goal could be lucky, 2 goals careless, 3 goals simply not good enough and therefore can’t be classed as a lucky win for us.

We outclassed Hull too but only got a draw because we let 2 in, we weren’t unlucky we were careless.

They played well except in the two boxes, they didn't take their chances and defended badly, and lost fair and square

3-0 down going into injury time and the goalkeeper still plays it out to the right and left backs. Well you're not going to score from there
