Why Cardiff City need a lot more from misfiring summer signing if they are to compete for promotion:

Cardiff City have endured a tough start to life back in the Championship with Neil Warnock’s men currently 13th in the table after the first six games.

Given the experienced Bluebirds boss has a hugely impressive record at this level, many expected Cardiff to make a faster start in the second-tier but it hasn’t worked out yet.

Of course, the campaign has only just begun, so there’s no reason for fans to panic, although scoring goals is already looking like it could be a problem for the Welsh side.

Seven goals in their first six games, including just three in their last four, is not good enough and whilst it’s a team effort, the form of striker Robert Glatzel is concerning.

The 25-year-old arrived from Bundesliga II side Heidenheim with a good reputation having grabbed 13 in 26 last season, as well as scoring a hat-trick against Bayern Munich in the cup.

But, he is yet to find the net in five games for Cardiff since joining for around £5.5m, which was a relatively hefty fee for the club.

The surprise packages of the EFL so far

With Isaac Vassell having fitness issues, and Omar Bogle and Gary Madine not huge favourites under Warnock, there is a real responsibility on Glatzel to score the goals that can turn Cardiff into promotion candidates.

And, as well as not scoring, he is currently struggling to adapt to English football, which is perhaps understandable.

Yet, the lack of quality to come in for the striker means that Warnock is going to have to persist with him and that can work in two ways.

On one hand, it could be a case of his confidence coming back once he scores his first goal and that could set him off on a run.

However, the longer his drought goes on, the more the pressure will build and that could have a negative impact on a player who is trying to adapt to a new league, country and style of football.

This is where having a manager like Warnock can help, with the promotion winner having come across all situations in the game and he will know what’s best to get more out of Glatzel in the coming weeks.

He needs a quick response from the player though, as right now Cardiff are finding the Championship a real grind and they are not going to make significant ground in the race for promotion until their summer recruit starts firing.

I'm happy with him to be honest , just needs a goal , strikers scoring for us , have always been a problem.
A lone striker against 2 sometimes 3 centre halves, is a thankless task .
