A few eyebrows would have been raised when Tavio Kouakou d’Almeida was named among the substitutes for Cardiff City's Carabao Cup tie with Luton Town.

That is largely because his signing on Monday went largely under the radar. No announcement or information, no fanfare, just a post on the player's social media account to say he had signed his first professional contract with the Bluebirds.


D'Almeida, 18, was released by Auxerre this summer after spending eight years in their academy system.

He was brought in on trial at the Welsh capital club this summer and impressed - he came off the bench to score against Haverfordwest for the Under 23s back in July.


And, because Auxerre opted not to extend his contract, the Bluebirds managed to sign him up on a free and the player has committed to a three-year deal.

There has even been reports in French newspapers that supporters are furious the club allowed him to leave on a free, believing him to be a player with great prospects.


Neil Warnock saw the youngster twice, before he put pen to paper on a contract, and was impressed with what he saw.


D'Almeida, who is originally from the Ivory Coast, typically operates on the right of midfield, but can also be deployed centrally, too.

"Every story got an ending, but in life, every ending announce a new start," d'Almeida wrote on Instagram.

"It’s with a big pleasure that I am announcing you the signature of my first professional contract with @cardiffcityfc .

"I would like to thank @aja for the years of learning, my relatives for their support and of course my agent without whom nothing would be possible."


He will likely continue to play for the Under 23s in hope of earning a call-up to Warnock's senior ranks in due course.
