About Luton Town

Luton Town Football Club is a professional association football club based in the town of Luton, Bedfordshire, England, that competes in the Championship, the second tier of the English football league system. Founded in 1885, it is nicknamed "the Hatters" and affiliated to the Bedfordshire County Football Association. The team plays its home matches at Kenilworth Road, where it has been based since 1905. The club's history includes major trophy wins, several financial crises, numerous promotions and relegations, and some spells of sustained success. It was perhaps most prominent between 1982 and 1992, when it was a member of English football's top division, at that time the First Division; the team won its only major honour, the Football League Cup, in 1988.

The club was the first in southern England to turn professional, making payments to players as early as 1890 and turning fully professional a year later. It joined the Football League before the 1897–98 season, left in 1900 because of financial problems, and rejoined in 1920. Luton reached the First Division in 1955–56 and contested a major final for the first time when playing Nottingham Forest in the 1959 FA Cup Final. The team was then relegated from the top division in 1959–60, and demoted twice more in the following five years, playing in the Fourth Division from the 1965–66 season. However, it was promoted back to the top level by 1974–75.

Luton Town's most recent successful period began in 1981–82, when the club won the Second Division, and thereby gained promotion to the First. Luton defeated Arsenal 3–2 in the 1988 Football League Cup Final and remained in the First Division until relegation at the end of the 1991–92 season. Between 2007 and 2009, financial difficulties caused the club to fall from the second tier of English football to the fifth in successive seasons. The last of these relegations came during the 2008–09 season, when 30 points were docked from Luton's record for various financial irregularities. Luton thereafter spent five seasons in non-League football before winning the Conference Premier in 2013–14, securing promotion back into the Football League.

Previous Meeting

We beat Luton 2-1 at home earlier this month in the Championship. Isaac Vassell scored a late winner after Luton had cancelled out Aden Flint's opener.

Expect too see nothing more than second string sides from both us and luton.
NW has never placed any emphasis on cup games, I will still be there though :-)

No crowd, second string, probably raining and another night game on Friday...

0-0 draw. Pens anyone's.

What's Neil Warnock said?

After their draw on Saturday, Warnock said: "There's a game Tuesday night now in the cup (against Luton), I'm sure it'll give all the lads 90 minutes, the ones who haven't had 90 minutes so far."

On Luton, he added: "I'm sure they'll want to go further (in the Carabao Cup). We've got to give some of the lads a chance on Tuesday. It's such a hard league, especially playing Friday as well, I'll be making a lot of changes."

I expect Day and Coxe to start. Probably Nelson and Brown at centre back. No idea who will play left back?

Hoilett to start to, will he start Vassell or Bogle? Maybe protect Bogle. Ward or Madine up front too? Midfield we lack cover but Vaulks will surely start.

My prediction (which will almost certainly be wrong!) Day: Coxe, Nelson, Flint, Bennett, Hoilett, Vaulks, Vassell, Bacuna, Madine, Bogle Sbs: Smithies, Peltier, Brown, Ward, ?,?,?

Even if it was free to get in I reckon we'd still have an attendance under 10,000.
Hope to have a look at Brown, Coxe and Waite. Vaulks needs to show something.

Some woeful finishing from both Vassell and Bogle, and an unlucky OG for Junior.
Midfield as normal being outpassed by Luton’s second string midfield.
Plenty of effort , Brown playing well but we are unable to string three passes together.
Whyte anonymous again.

0-2 now.
Doesn’t look like anyone’s breaking down NWs door for a first team place based on the stats and commentary.

Be sad when Warnock leaves at the end of the season but f**k me I won't miss his lack of commitment to cup competitions, embarrassment once again.

Why wasn’t a first team selected? They’re fit professionals who can play 2 games in 4 days.

Tue Aug 27, 2019 8:21 pm

Don't care if its a cup game, losing 3-0 at home to Luton Town's second team is not acceptable and quite frankly pathetic. I mean we've got some supposedly good players out there in Flint, Vaulks, Paterson, Whyte, Hoilett, Vassell, and Bogle.

Fair play to those who bothered to waste their money on this, they should be refunded. Underlines how the squad really is weak. Absolutely no positives from tonight. One thing I wont miss from Warnock is his appalling approach to cup games.
