NEIL WARNOCK:

Thoughts on the new forward line last week?

“It was quite pleasing in the first game, after only a couple of days training. There were a lot of plusses for us. We do get criticised. If I said who had the most long balls last week you’d all say us. But they had more than us, Luton. We attack, we are entertaining.

“We’ve got good players in midfield, the full backs, wingers are exciting as anyone in the league.”

On Marlon Pack

“Before he went out to kick a ball I commented to Kevin in the dressing room how good it was to have him.. I think he can get better, there were one or two little errors which I had a chat to him about. I think he can get forward a little more. “

Mendez-Laing in contention?

“Might be a bit early. Tomlin trained yesterday and had a real bad week on and off the toilet.”

Feeling good after a win?

NEIL WARNOCK:

“Yeah it’s always great. You could see that in training, the lads have been a lot freer and been more enjoyable.”

“The disappointment of the way we conceded goals in the first game. Just the mistakes surprised me.

“We knew we needed reinforcements last week before the game. We were a lot more solid.”

On Reading

“Even the manager said he was surprised he spent 20m. They paid 8m for Puscas. It will be a difficult but I enjoy going there.”

NEIL WARNOCK:

Are you more comfortable in the Championship?

“It’s something you just have to get on with. Every game is tough as we knew going to Wigan. There’s no easy games. Every game is winnable. It’s a different psychological thing in the Championship. I love playing Millwall, Neil Harris and that, he gets stick but they’ve done a brilliant job. Fulham spend money, West Brom. Then you’ve got the whole mix of it.

“The Premier League is the top league in the world but it is getting more difficult for anyone outside the top six. I had never seen anything like Man City last year and they have improved this year.

“The crowd for the Championship makes it the third highest league or something in the world in terms of attendances. My dad would have loved the Championship. I don’t know what he’d say about the Premier League.

“You read papers when you play City and you’ve got pundits who never managed and they say you’ve got to have a go. You can’t, you don’t get the ball. I love reading papers, me. I have five every day.”

Progression?

“We can steady down now. No turmoil until January so we can just continue and look to get back to some sort of rhythm.”

On criticism from Blakey

“I always take what Nathan (Blake) says with a pinch of salt. I don’t know how long Nathan managed for. But when you’re in management it’s totally different.

“I’ve put the club back four years by staying, Nathan said. I will look on and read Nathan’s comments when I’ve left.

“Sometimes it’s better the devil you know. It sells newspapers.

“There are some good bits and Nathan talks sense sometimes. But you’ve got to be a manager to understand. I do read Nathan.

“I was disappointed at the end of last season that the local paper printed saying for me to be gone after I announced I was staying. I think the area is covered well.”

On latest Sala findings

NEIL WARNOCK:

“I was asked about Sala this week and what I wanted today. I felt we should all wait until the final report is made. It is unprofessional to speculate, and cruel, and I just wanted to mention that. And we move on again now so lets wait until the final report.”

Prutton backing Cardiff

Sky pundit David Prutton is backing the Bluebirds for all three points on Sunday.

“It could well be another season of struggle for Reading if their first two results are anything to go by. They have failed to carry the momentum from the back end of the last campaign into this one so far.

“Cardiff got a late, late win against Luton last weekend to get off and running. They will always be tough for anyone to face, and I think they will be too good for Reading.”

Prutton predicts: 0-1

On Charlie Adam

“Charlie’s a good pro and he always has been. Does it simple and knows his limitations, he’s a leader.”

“He’ll be wanting to kickstart the season.”

On Glatzel

NEIL WARNOCK:

“It was good to see. I’m not a stats man but it was good to see how far he ran. He put in a good shift. I’m sure Isaac’s goal has given him a lift.”

Are you more direct this season?

NEIL WARNOCK:

“Not really. You lose Bruno, who gives us more quality on the ball etc. You have to look at what Flint rings us instead of Bruno. You don’t want Bruno to go but I think we play a lot more football. If you take possession in your own half.

“It’ll be interesting to see how the club go after I leave.”

First few games - any favourites already?

NEIL WARNOCK:

“I do think when you look at Leeds, they played well this year, West Brom, Fulham, they are going to be the teams. My dark horse is Sheffield Wednesday. They took Kadeem and Murphy’s brother, they won’t be far away. Good luck to Kadeem, I think he’ll do well. I could have given him a contract but i told him he needs to play. He’s got to do it for his own career.”

Ralls comes down with illness

NEIL WARNOCK:

“Joe Ralls was one of the lads drug tested on the weekend and he couldn’t give a sample. I left him at quarter to seven after the game and he was having a laugh and a joke and all of a sudden he took ill - started vomiting, things like that

.”He ended up in A&E overnight on a drip. It just shows you in the space of two hours.

”It just shows you, when you’re as fit as these lads, the slightest thing can just knock you off sync.

“He just managed to (give a sample) in the end. I couldn’t do it, with someone watching me, I don’t know how they do it.

”I felt sorry for Joe. I think the drugs people were going to say it was a missed drugs test. Come on. Common sense.

”We don’t think (he had the same as Lee Tomlin (gastroenteritis)). They have taken swabs, or whatever they do, because Tomlin couldn’t even come down to see our doctors because he was up at home in Leicestershire.

”So we didn’t see him until this week. We have been really spot on in the changing rooms and restaurants and things like that. Because the slightest bug goes around like wildfire. So we’ve just got to hope.”Joe Ralls was one of the lads drug tested on the weekend and he couldn’t give a sample. I left him at quarter to seven after the game and he was having a laugh and a joke and all of a sudden he took ill - started vomiting, things like that.”

Could Ralls still play?

NEIL WARNOCK:

”I don’t know. He came in yesterday and he was feeling good. But all I was trying to say is I left him at quarter to seven having a laugh and the poor lad is in hospital overnight on a blinking drip.

“It’s a good job his girlfriend realised when they got home he was in a bad state and whipped him down straight away. The doc told her if he wasn’t happy to take him down and she wasn’t happy, so all credit to her.”
