Cardiff City's Greg Cunningham found a new club

Thu Aug 08, 2019 2:00 pm

Cardiff City's Greg Cunningham is reportedly on the cusp of sealing a season-long loan deal to Blackburn Rovers.

Cunningham wants to quit Cardiff to seek regular first-team action, having played just eight times since his move from Preston last summer.

Joe Bennett is Warnock's first choice at left-back, and rightly so, and Cunningham knows he would be playing second fiddle if he stayed in the Welsh capital this season.

A number of Championship clubs were said to be keen on him but it now appears that Blackburn have won the race to his signature.

What a great signing that was. Thank god we didn't decide to buy a player that was good enough to play in the starting 11, we might have actually improved.

What a colossal waste of transfer funds and wages.
Seriously what was the point of this signing?

So who's going to play left back if Bennet gets injured or suspended?

Rovers are delighted to announce the deadline day signing of defender Greg Cunningham from Cardiff City.

The 28-year-old left-back joins on a season-long loan deal and becomes Rovers' sixth signing of the summer.

On Manchester City's books as a youngster, Cunningham made five appearances for the Premier League side and enjoyed loan spells in the Championship with Leicester City and Nottingham Forest.

In July 2012, Cunningham made a permanent move to Bristol City, where he would make over 100 appearances and played alongside Derrick Williams.

After helping the Robins secure promotion to the Championship in 2014-15, Cunningham joined Preston North End in July 2015.

The dependable defender became a firm fixture at Deepdale over the next three seasons, starting over 100 Championship games, before making a £4m move to Cardiff in June 2018.

The Republic of Ireland international, who has earned four caps for his country, made seven Premier League appearances for the Bluebirds last season, ahead of his summer switch to Ewood Park.

Cunningham is eligible to play for Rovers in this season's Carabao Cup, but not in any games against his parent club.
