In fact why does any club leave it till the last day ?
This time last year we signed two or three on the last day, and it looks like (well hopefully anyway) we may be doing the same this season, just like a lot of clubs.
The one thing it doesn’t do is sell season tickets.
But it does keep the interest up on boards like this, the press, social media etc
One theory a mate of mine has is that it’s all to do with Sky and there influence over football in this country, during the close season Sky build the hype up over transfers and it all culminates on the last day, bringing in more customers each season and more importantly keeping prescriptions going through the close season, enabling their monthly turnover to remain stable adding millions to their annual turnover ?
So are the deals actually done in advance yet the clubs keep them back to build the hype ?

It's negotiation. It doesn't take 5 minutes.
First you've got to try convince a player to move to South Wales....as beautiful as we all think it is there are still people with misconceptions or have never even heard of Wales.
Then negotiating personal terms.
Then negotiating price with players club..
It's not a simple process.

Add to the list
"Then player waits as long as they can to see if a better offer comes in from anywhere"

Also, the influence of the players agent and what percentage they want, needs to be taken into account.

Agents tell players that several clubs are interested and to wait and see what materialises (McKay with Sala) just to bump the price up so they (agents) get a better deal

According to Mel Morris, Rooney’s transfer took 3 days. That includes the flight over and the medical.

It's simply because clubs and players wait until they can get the best possible deal, and the best possible deal usually always comes on deadline day when everyone is desperate to finish completing their squads.
Negotiations could take weeks. Take Wilfred Zaha for example, Palace keep rejecting bids and Everton are the latest club linked. Everton could get desperate tomorrow and table an even bigger offer, which Palace might accept. Then there's the domino effect where Palace are frantically trying to bring in a replacement before the window shuts.
The other example is if an offer for a player is accepted, but the player is waiting to see if a bigger club comes in or see if a club comes in at the last minute offering a bigger financial package etc. We could have had offers accepted for several players this summer, but these players could have chosen to wait to see what other offers they have before they have to make a decision before the transfer window closes.
If you was a footballer with an agent getting in your ear, drumming up interest to instigate a bidding war for you to have the best possible deal, would you be any rush to move to a club before deadline day?

I understand with some players it is simply player power and for some it’s agent power, but surely that’s mainly for the premier players ?
If a club wants someone (within their means) surely it can be done quickly ? And if not then you move on to the next one on your list, a club should not want players & agents calling the shots, move on.
Either way it still shouldn’t take 12 weeks to sort these deals, if you contact an agent about one of his players and their is an interest then if a deal cannot be done within a week then you move on surely, and you would be talking to more than one player at a time also.
Leaving things to materialise on transfer day is surely too big a risk for any club as you run the risk of not signing anyone, surely ?
I’m convinced that deals announced on transfer day have been sorted before this, maybe only a day or two and not all of them but a lot of these deals that will be announced tomorrow would have been done at some other time this week.
Even Sky only ever show a few players turning up at a club to sign last minute on transfer day.

Every club does. I guess you think signing players is really easy and we have our pick of thousands.

I did say most clubs seem to do it, no I understand that it isn’t all cut and dried, I deal myself in negotiations all the time, I just find it hard to believe it takes as long as it does and equally or more so that clubs, agents and players leave it till the last day to finalise things, surely risking any deal going through all together.

I have said the same thing many times on different threads. We had the whole of last summer to bring in a striker for the premier league and we failed to do so. We knew after the palace game last season when we were relegated (3 months ago) that we were losing virtually all of our midfield (3 players) and now, up until 7 hours before the window closes we have brought in one replacement who warnock didn't even play last saturday.
