" Wayne Rooney "

Tue Aug 06, 2019 1:25 pm

UPDATED:

Wayne Rooney has signed as player coach for Derby County 18 months contract at £85,000 a week starting Jan 2020.

BBC

Championship side Derby County have signed former England captain Wayne Rooney on an initial 18-month player-coach deal from MLS side DC United.

The 33-year-old forward, who is Manchester United's and England's all-time record goalscorer, will join up with the Rams in January.

He signed for DC from Everton in July 2018 and has scored 23 goals in 41 league games.

To come in at that time of the season, masterstroke. He will destroy championship defenders :bluebird:

I know they get decent crowds but Derby have been chucking money at promotion for years now, they must be flirting with FFP.

Yep, their latest master stroke was to sell their ground for I think it was £50 million

And guess who bought it the guy who owns Derby??? So basically he sold it to himself to get around FPP rules!!

They will go up if he stays fit.

Will tear this league apart.

Meanwhile we’ve got Gary Madine......

Re: " Wayne Rooney "

Tue Aug 06, 2019 3:37 pm

This seems dodgy, I thought it was against the rules to do things like this.

Rooney will get 100k a week paid for by betting firm 32red who have just sponsored the club

Rooney will wear the number 32 shirt on a 18 month deal

Surely it's not allowed for a third party to pay a players wages ?
What about financial fair play or is this a way around it

This will back fire - don’t think he has the legs for championship football.

come on, if we had signed rooney i would be over the moon to sort our midfield out, what a signing i agree with last post if he's on form look out.

I think his legs went 2/3 seasons ago, that is why he chose to go to America.
Do you honestly think he will keep up with the constant barrage of tackles and the pace of the championship? In the premier league he can walk around waiting for the ball because he had world class players around him, he wont have that at derby or the time on the ball he is used to in the premier league. He will be 35 when he arrives at Derby

On another note what are the other players in the changing room going to think of his wages?
100k for Rooney v 20k average for the others, that alone could cause them problems

I see another Robbie Fowler episode happening here

I have a opinion, if it's different to yours that's fine.
I dont think he will do very well, actually I will be suprised if he plays most weeks, he definitely wont be playing saturday, wednesday, saturday week in week out

He’s been fit all of his career that’s why he’s the record goal scorer for one of the biggest football clubs in the world and his country.

Agree with you, Jack :thumbup:

I'm not a Rooney fan but I think he will do well for Derby County at a time when they will need to freshen things up. He'll be a class act in the Championship and he clearly feels he still wants to achieve

Wish he was coming to us but I could only imagine the meltdown as the usual suspects pick holes in his arrival via his age, comparisons to Fowler (who I thought was pretty successful for us overall), Lambert and others; none of whom were in the same class at the stage of arrival

Re: " Wayne Rooney "

Tue Aug 06, 2019 5:59 pm

As hes a player coach and obviously he'll be registered by the club as a player they must include him in players wages. So not a rouge to avoid ffp. But by doing it from January
obviously cuts down the amount needed to be accounted for....:thumbup:

I dont mean injury wise I mean actual fitness, hes never been a player who can run, chase back and battle all game. Be honest the last 4 years hes been a shadow of his former self,he was awful at Everton and being in America would have only made him worse
He scored a lot of goals yes but they were in and around the box and that was in a very good team that had players to set him up at will. He will not have that at derby and will be a target for opposing players. Looking at his time in America he looks overweight. He is finished at the top level and the championship will prove to be too much for him in my opinion.

People are going over the top because of Wayne Rooney the name not Wayne Rooney the player as he is now. He even said himself in his interview that he doubts his body will keep up with playing twice a week

I was alluding to the fact that on the same day they announce Rooney , they announce a huge sponsorship deal with a betting firm 32red whilst also announcing he will wear the number 32 shirt. Surely that is the same as what Man city are currently being investigated for with there sponsors ?

Thought man c was to do with having relatives of owners involved with sponsorship which is not allowed.... think derby are just cashing in on Rooney with bet 32red obviously it's a tie up to give company maximum exposure.

Of course he isn’t the same player he was before but the player he was before was one of the best players in the world.

For somebody who scores from only in and around the box he’s managed to score from the half way line for every club he’s played for.

You’ve seriously just dismissed one of England’s best ever players as a player who’s never been fit and only scores from in and around the box.

He WAS a very good player
He IS NOT anymore as proven by his last 2 years in England and his move to the states.

His last 3 seasons in England he scored less than 8 goals each season compared to his much higher average in his prime which just backs up the point he is over the hill.

I said he was never fit as in he was never a player to run all game as he didnt have the engine for it as he will need in the championship.

Even Mark Hudson scored from the half way line it doesn't make you a good player

Keep digging that hole mate.

One of Rooneys best attributes was his work rate.

I’m his last three seasons in the England his goal scoring record was.

15/16 — 20 goals
16/17 — 8 goals (last year at Man Utd mostly from the bench)
17/18 — 11 goals

Well thomasblue might not of noticed his work rate but at least one of the G.O.A.T did.

Now I know he’s not the player he was but that player was one of the best in world. I very much doubt he’s gone from people like Messi saying things like that about him to struggling to play against Luton Town and Barnsley in a few years.

He never scored 20 goals in 2015 he scored 5

Let's revisit this end of the season and see who was right

When some players reach a certain age they just lose it

Look at Whittingham, he was a class player for years then all of a sudden it was gone pretty much over a summer, couldn't even drop a league and get into the team.

And your comparing a top championship player to a player who was one of the best in the world.

Simple question for you who in the championship is better then Wayne Rooney.

This is the official top 10 golden boot award list for 2015 /16 in the premier league, and NO Wayne Rooney.

Who is better than Rooney ?

In his Prime nobody.
But he is not the same player anymore, there are a lot of players I would choose ahead of him now, just watch some of his games in the states or his last season at everton to see his decline.

Depending on where you play him, but just to cover the forward/midfield positions I would rather have quite a few in my team than a over the hill Rooney

Mitrovic
Sessegnon
Helder costa
Arron Mooy
Assombalonga
Bradley Dack
Ollie Watkins
Harry Arter
I could keep going but cant be bothered, Rooney is finished at this level and it will show after January.

2015/16 top scorers list : No Rooney

9= Troy Deeney (Watford) – 13
9= Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal) – 13
7= Jermain Defoe (Sunderland) – 15
7= Odion Ighalo (Watford) – 15
5= Olivier Giroud (Arsenal) – 16
4= Riyad Mahrez (Leic City) – 17
3= Romelu Lukaku (Everton) – 18
2= Jamie Vardy (Leic City) – 24
2= Sergio Aguero (Man city) - 24
1= Harry Kane ( Spurs ) 24

Fair do’s, this is an interesting debate between Thomas blue & Llan blue.
I’m definitely on Llan blues side here. I would love a signing like Rooney here. He would lift the whole club, fans, season tickets, etc, etc.

With regards to playing I think he’ll be a success also.

While he’s obviously not the player he was, he’s never had pace and his football brain & skill is way above anybody else in this league.

I’ll look forward to seeing how it turns out end of season!
