Neil Warnock says goalkeeper Neil Etheridge is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Cardiff City number one was forced off midway through the second half of the opening-day defeat to Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium, with his exit preceding two quick goals that would eventually set the hosts up for a thrilling victory.

Etheridge looked in some pain before being replaced by new signing Joe Day, and Warnock admits he is facing a prolonged period without the Philippines international.

However, he's dismissed any suggestion that the keeper's exit was a turning point in the defeat.

"It's a hamstring injury, so it'll be a few weeks I think," Warnock said.

Neil Etheridge, gone off injured left hamstring.

Smithies won’t be loaned out either.

I wonder.

I notice Murphy is still in Cardiff, wonder if he will come back in if smithies is sent out.

If Etheridge is out for a few weeks don't be surprised if we bring in a loan keeper.

I would be surprised if we brought in another keeper.I think Etheridge will be out for several weeks.Should play Smithies as he has more experience in the championship but I think Warnock will go with Joe Day.

Got to go with Smithies now, a league 2 keeper shouldn't start before a solid championship keeper.

Some were saying Smithies was the best keeper outside the premiership when we signed him and QPR fans were sorry to lose him and rated him highly. Was very impressed with Day in Newport's two playoff games but much less impressed with him yesterday when he got nowhere near saving any of Wigan's three goals yesterday. Reckon a better keeper migh have saved at least on of them. Smithies for me.

Massive step up from league 2 to the championship though. I agree about the goals. Could have been quicker off his line for the first and was probably 2 yards off position for the second. No chance with the third. He was badly let down by his defence for all 3 though, very sloppy defending. First should have been dealt with and the second and third the striker shouldn't have even had the opportunity to get his shot off.

Smithies looked like he was going to be loaned out but with Etheridge out for 4-6 weeks that probably wont happen now. He should be first choice now and if he doesn't start, I think thats just down to Warnock being stubborn.

Possibly Smithies was being lined up to be moved on, with Day on the bench ahead of him?

No keeper would have saved them .

Would hope some of Day’s distribution at Wigan would push Smithies into a starting position - would be good to see him get a run as he’s not had a chance with us yet. If he can produce what he’s done at QPR and Huddersfield for us then we’ve more than a capable replacement.

Smithies has to start. Day looked out of his depth Saturday.
