Sven wrote:‘THIS IS A BLOW AND A BLESSING IN THE SAME INSTANCE’ – WARNOCK MAKES BIG DECISION AT CARDIFF: THE VERDICT
By Neil Rourke
This article is part of Football League World’s ‘The Verdict’ series, which provides personal opinions from the FLW writers regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock will be making his final preparations for the kick-off of the new Championship season, a season that will bring to a close a 40-year management career, after the 70-year-old confirmed to BBC Sport that this season would ‘absolutely’ be his last.
Warnock confirmed: “One or two of my best friends have struggled health-wise this year and [my wife] Sharon and I do want to be able to go and see one or two things while we have got our health”.
So having announced his retirement, Warnock will hope that he can leave the Bluebirds next summer, on the back of a promotion back to the Premier League.
So how big a blow will the loss of Warnock be to Cardiff next summer?
We discuss……..
Kealan Hughes
“This is disappointing news for Cardiff and their fans, as the club has grown to love Warnock and he has been fantastic since he arrived in Wales, completely turning around the fortunes of the club.
“However, there could be a positive to come for it, and the players may put in that extra bit of effort with the knowledge that he is departing, and that could culminate in promotion which would be a fitting way for him to depart.
“In fact, if the club was promoted it may be possible to persuade him to stay for a further year. Either way, it would be sad to see him depart, although his departure may not impact results as much as one might think.
“Cardiff have improved significantly on and off the field in recent years and there is no longer any turmoil under Vincent Tan. Mehmet Dalman is doing a great job as chairman and would likely find a suitable successor as manager, even possibly using Warnock’s help to do so.”
Gary Hutchinson
“This is a blow and a blessing in the same instance. The fact he’s given them a season is promising; it means they can be ‘Cardiff’ for a year and have a good chance of promotion. What I mean by that is tough, robust and every bit as horrible to play as two years ago.
“If that does work, Warnock steps aside as they go up and become something different, perhaps ball playing and with a budget boosted by Premier League money. If they don’t go up, they would need a change of emphasis anyway.
“Neil Warnock might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but he’s had a great career and always managed to stay slightly more attractive on the field than a Pulis side.
“That said, Cardiff supporters won’t complain about a change in style.”
George Brooks
“Even though Cardiff were relegated from the Premier League last season, it was absolutely vital that they were able to persuade Warnock to remain at the club this summer.
“He is a vastly experienced manager and knows exactly what it takes to achieve success in English football, having won promotion a record eight times in his career.
“Cardiff will find it very difficult to replace him when he retires at the end of this season.
“It is definitely a blow for Cardiff to lose him, but I think he is capable of achieving more success with the club in his final season and what better way to end his career than by winning promotion to the Premier League again.”
