When you look at what we’ve been looking at all summer, the prices are just ridiculous.
The prices have just gone sky high, really.
You could do with a proper goal-scorer…

You could do with a proper goal-scorer…
NEIL WARNOCK:
We’ve always struggled for goals since I’ve been here. Even when Ken was in the team, we struggled. I think the only patch we had was that few months when Ken hit a golden streak. They’ve done well pre-season, Gary Madine in particular has done really well.
I just feel that Robert gives us something different. He can do the channels as well, he’s quite mobile, got a touch of pace.
I’m hoping we can get him in the right areas.
I don’t think the physical side will worry him too much.
I’ve explained to him about the Championship, and he’s got a bit of an edge to his game as well.
I think we’ve just got to see how we are.

Your last season, you’ve still got that drive, you love the Championship?

I do love the Championship, yeah. I like the blood and thunder of the whole place.
I like the way the fans are, even away from home, it’s a different breed.
Yeah, they might have a go at me, but it’s in a good nature - I say good-natured way, in most places it is!
I don’t like the travelling and the hotels.
This is my 40th year, so I think you’ve got to call it a day some time.
I don’t think it would have been right to leave, as one or two people said in the press.
I think it was right that we get the squad blended so it’s easier for a manager to come in with a settled squad.
I think we’ve got a really good squad now and we’re going to give it a good go.
If things didn’t work out, I’d probably leave before the end of the season. I’m sure we’d talk like that.
I think at the minute, we’ve just got to concentrate on doing well.
The fans are up for it, last week it was 18,000 season tickets sold, it’s amazing.
I just think they are amazing, this group of fans. And it’s almost like an occasion now when they come to the stadium to watch a game, it’s a family day out, it’s not just a game of football, they’ve really taken it on board.
It helps the players, the support they give us, it’s brilliant.

How are you feeling now having got your main man in?

I feel really good. I know how hard it’s going to be with Wigan. They’ve had a really good pre-season, drawing with Burnley and Everton.
I’ve looked at them and they’re a strong squad. They finished the season really well last year.
They look like they’re bringing three or four players in as we talk.
Paul’s my cup of tea as a manager, it’s on his sleeve.
It’ll be a tough game so we’ve got to make sure we’re ready for that battle.

He was my number one target really, from the start.
We’ve lost a couple because of that, and then we thought we might have lost him at the death as well because two or three Championship clubs came in for him.
In fairness to the lad, he could have gone for more money than what he’s on here.
All credit to him, he knew I was after him six weeks ago and I’m delighted he’s thrown his lot in with us.
He’s a hard-working lad who has taken step by step from lower down divisions, and taken every step in his stride.
He’s quite mobile for a big lad, decent in the air as you’d expect, and I think there’s a lot more into his game and I think there’s a lot more improvement in his game as well.
You don’t know with strikers, do you. It’s one of those things.
He just seemed the best value for money for what we were looking for and the type of lad we were looking for: team player, works very, very hard.
There’ll be deficiencies but he’s only in the last two or three days come onto the scene.
His finishing’s quite clinical as well, so let’s hope we can give him a good run and he can do the business for us.

We’ve worked hard, two and a half years since I’ve been here, we’ve worked hard to get a squad like this.
I know, when you look at it in the cold light of day, we lost five good players in Camarasa, Gunnarsson, Harry Arter, Bruno, Ken Zohore, five top players, really.
But I think we’ve supplemented that with players who the fans will enjoy. I think the fans appreciate lads that give everything. Probably sometimes I don’t think one or two of them get enough credit for how they play. I think we’ve got one or two good footballers in that side.
They’re all looking forward to it, they know what’s at stake on Saturday.
We’ve just got to get in there and first of all, we have to match them for their effort because they are a hard-working team, as all teams are in this league. Everybody is looking for a good start and we are no different.

It’s pointless me being here if there’s no chance of promotion, that’s why I say we’ll have to look at it at Christmas and see where we are and have a look at that.
That’s the one reason I came here because I thought I could get my eighth promotion and call it a day, and here I am talking about a ninth! Which would be, you look at the teams up there, it’s very difficult for us, the Fulhams, the West Broms, they’ve spent quite a lot of money, and the squads they’ve got, with Leeds and Stoke City, there’s that many top-class teams there.
We’ve got to make sure, like we said last time we were in the Championship, we’ve got to be up there or thereabouts around the play-offs at Christmas then look to push on.

This was my main thing, I wouldn’t want to go through what we did in the last 48 hours on Thursday. It would have probably finished me off, that!
We managed to tie it all up yesterday including the medical, and put that to bed.
That was my main concern, I just felt we needed freshening up.
Gavin gives us that bit different, and so does Robert.
We’re delighted to have two players that will give us the freshness of the squad.

How do you get enough goals out of Bogle, Madine and Glatzel?

That, I don’t know. You can only just work with what you’ve got. I’m sure after next Thursday we’ll have more of an idea of who’s staying and how we’re going to play.
Fortunately most of the lads here know what we expect. Certain lads have come back better players. I’ve been really pleased with Joe and Bacuna, I think they’ve done excellent, and Will in there as well. Once he’s relaxing a little bit more now, he’s showing what kind of player he is. I’m quite pleased. Wide players, I think Gavin gives us that extra competition that we needed on that side to push Mendez on as well. At the back, I’ve got Curtis who I’m really, really confident in, can fit in anywhere around there. Joe Bennett probably played the best game I’ve seen him play last week for a long time, in training he’s been very good.
I don’t think we can prepare any better for the season.

Was last season a dress rehearsal for this?
NEIL WARNOCK:
Really, I should be the Mediterranean now because we should have stayed up, shouldn’t we. That would have been a lovely time to call it a day. But life’s not like that, it’s not straight and forward.
But we have to regroup, I’ve got a great skipper and I’ve got a good group of lads.
When you lose Gunnarsson and people like that, you need leaders around, and we haven’t really got a lot of leaders, Morrison’s quite there but you can see with Aden, the way he talks to people, he’s brought the best out of everybody as well. I’m really pleased with that. With all the positions I’ve brought in, I’ve had to be patient with some of them throughout the summer.
For a manager, the summer is not the easiest of times.
I’m glad it’s my last one, you’re on the phone every two or three minutes, and it’s so difficult now, management in the Championship, in particular. But I’ve got a good group of players and I do enjoy watching them.

When you lose Gunnarsson and people like that, you need leaders around, and we haven’t really got a lot of leaders, Morrison’s quite there but you can see with Aden, the way he talks to people, he’s brought the best out of everybody as well. I’m really pleased with that. With all the positions I’ve brought in, I’ve had to be patient with some of them throughout the summer.
For a manager, the summer is not the easiest of times.
I’m glad it’s my last one, you’re on the phone every two or three minutes, and it’s so difficult now, management in the Championship, in particular. But I’ve got a good group of players and I do enjoy watching them.

Players know where they’ve been and what it takes to get back there?

They’re level-headed lads, aren’t they.
You could say they’re top Championship players. I thought that was a bit harsh last year, because I thought they adapted to the Premiership very well. I thought if circumstances had been different, we’d have stayed up with a canter.
You get enough kicks in the teeth in this world and you’ve just got to regroup and go again. It’s a lot easier to regroup and go again when you’ve got 18,000 season tickets sold and 3,000 travelling to Wigan
I think they do realise how much we love them now, it’s a very reciprocal thing between the players and the fans now.

A nine-month farewell tour?

I hope I last nine months, that means we’re not far off!
And that’s not being disrespectful to Vincent or Mehmet, they know how I feel. They know I’d love to get us back up and help them pick the manager and help the club forward for many years to come. But you can’t look too far ahead in football, you’ve just got to get on with what’s next, and that’s Wigan.
