‘ GARY MADINE / NOW ONLY 2 STRIKERS LEFT ‘

Mon Jul 29, 2019 1:36 pm

Gary Madine's injury has left Warnock with only two fit out-and-out strikers ahead of the season opener with Wigan Athletic, so you can forgive him for being so keen to play down his side's promotion opportunities.

But while he admits it's not quite going to plan, Warnock remains in reasonably high spirits.

When further pressed on what he was looking for, he joked: "25 goals, 6ft 4, 8.700 yards and good in the air."

Such quips are hardly the mark of a man feeling the pressure, and although a cynic may say it's Warnock's way of putting a brave face on things, there are genuine positives.

Omar Bogle has been City's stand out performer in pre-season, and looks completely rejuvenated since his return from a season-and-a-half-long exile, while Callum Paterson, a huge favourite with Warnock, is also returning.

Yes, Cardiff don't appear to be close to a breakthrough on a new recruit, but even if they were, Warnock would hardly be shouting it from the rooftops. He's made dampening expectations into something of an art over the years.

His keenness to play down their promotion chances should they fail to get their man shows he understands the gravity of the situation in terms of Cardiff's promotion hopes if they don't land a striker, but he's clearly got little intention of pushing the panic button just yet.

The lack of possible names at this stage means some fans might not be so patient, and defeat on the opening day will only crank up the pressure to get someone on board.

However, there's clearly a plan on the table aimed at addressing things, and Warnock's been in this game long enough to know that rushing into matters and getting the wrong man on board will risk doing more harm than good.

Getting it right will be crucial and, if it takes a bit of time, will be well worth the wait.

Mirror are reporting that Omar Bogle is being used as part of the Whyte deal to Oxford, can't see this being anything but lazy journalism but if true surely NW has a plan

At the moment it has to be Patterson up front with Reid behind

Or reid up front with Tomlin behind

They are the oy two options without risking wether Bogle could step up

Id like to see Lee Tomlin behind Bobby Reid but I know that's not going to happen so id go with Reid at 10 and Bogle up front.

He has scored more goals for us whilst playing up front than all of our other strikers put together !

Hes not great but I would play him as soon as hes fit over the others if we dont sign anybody

Paterson may not be a striker by trade but he can perform the primary aim of scoring goals. I agree if there is no other option then I am confident he can do a job for us.

in our system the primary aim isnt scoring though, which is why zohore was still our main striker at the time he left.

Sorry he never looked like scoring In many games because simply he doesnt get into position to score like strikers do? Any ambitious club does not play a defender or whatever position he plays as a main striker if hoping to get promoted,? :old:

Have to disagree, I'd rather a striker who doesn't score but can bring others into play and control a ball with his back to goal than one like Patterson.

We looked a million miles better with Niasse upfront who never looked like scoring than Patterson. We need better than both.

Yes we played better and our strikers got into good positions but we didnt score and lost

When patterson played we were awful to watch, but we scored and picked up points through his sheer work rate

I'd rather a player score from scraps and flakes than a striker who gets in all the right positions but fluffs every chance
