NEIL WARNOCK: “I WILL LISTEN TO OFFERS”

Sun Jul 28, 2019 11:09 am

Neil Warnock admits Cardiff City will listen to offers for goalkeeper Neil Etheridge before the close of the transfer window.

Speculation linking Etheridge with Aston Villa simply refuses to go away, with reports from the Midlands earlier in the week suggesting that Dean Smith could yet be tempted into launching a late move before the close of the window.

Sources close to the player had initially indicated that Cardiff had already rejected an offer of around £8m from the Villans earlier in the window , only for those claims to be categorically denied by the Bluebirds.

NEIL WARNOCK:

"As I've said before, we'll listen to anything," he said.

"I've not heard anything and I don't think Neil has."

Asked if he was worried about Villa potentially stepping up their interest before the close of the window, he added: "Not really. I think we've got three great keepers.

"It wouldn't worry me playing any of three. Joe Day's had a fantastic pre-season, Smithies is as reliable as anything and Neil is what he is.”

"So it wouldn't worry me if an offer came in for Neil, Smithies or whatever, because I'm very happy in that department.

"It's the other end of the field that I'm concerned with really."

To me this sends out the wrong message.

Surely we must be in a position where we don't have to sell any of our important players?

It can't be that we need the money :o :o

If we are serious about getting back to the Premier League surely it's obvious that you need your best players to give yourself the best chance and Etheridge is much better than Smithies and Day.

Surely we should be saying "hands off" our best players rather than effectively saying "come and get them".

Not impressed by the transfer window so far at all and it looks like it could get worse rather than better.

He's drumming up confidence in his keepers and a reminder to etheridge to keep his feet on the floor.

It's paper talk. Been like it all summer.

I've no issues with this.

Yes Etheridge is a great asset to the team but is £10m of greater use bearing in mind the two goalies we have in cover.

Spot on great man management by Neil as usual, keeping confidence in his reserve keepers so their heads on the game. Every player has their worth of the money is right then sell, but obviously I would like Neil to stay as the no1.

Totally agree with him, nows the time to sell.

He is worth far more than £10m in this present inflated transfer market. If clubs don't want to offer £20m then he stays a City player.

Even if he wants to go?
You know that even under contract players hold the trump cards these days mate.

I suppose another £10m off the debt has to be good business because it doesn't look at the moment as if any of it will be used to buy new players.

STEVE THE TEA

agree entirely with what you said, even if he was sold now, we would not use the money for a striker because i fear its to late.

I would be gutted to see him sold, however every player has his price. Receiving a £8m+ fee for him would be good business

Too late for what? Transfer market doesn’t shut until 8th August.

Agree with most of the above posts, £8M to £10M would be a good price to sell. He's a very good keeper especially saving pens but he can't kick that well and often put the pressure back on our defence with kicks straight into touch. Whatever Sir Neil decides is ok by me,

For the right price he's gone as it would be with any player.

So if its too late for us to sign anyone
How is there enough time for some one to sign etheridge
Some comments on here are so stupid

If Warnock said no way is he not for sale and then he goes Warnock would be attacked for it so he is playing safe good management as we are Cardiff in the championship and any player could go if the offer is good and a premiership team came in for them we are not man city besides top 4 maybe 6 every player can leave if the offer was right

Take £10mill add the £6mill left over from our other sales and spend it on a proper striker and midfielder

Etheridge we can do without, a striker we cant

I'm reading that as NW has been planning to be without Etheridge, but needs him sold before he can finalise what budget he has to bring in what's needed.
In short, if Etheridge goes for say £10m, I can see us bringing in a few maybe 2 permanent and a loan or two. Exciting week ahead.

I don't think Etheridge will want leave.

He only needs to look at what's happened to Smithies since he came here and if Etheridge leaves us I can only see it being for a bottom half EPL side and even theb he's not guaranteed to be number 1.

Why leave to sit on the bench elsewhere when he knows he will play week in week out here and is probably on as good money as any suitors can offer.

He said he would be happy to sit on the bench and wait for his chance in the prem.

I didn't know that, that's dissapointing, he's obviously not overly committed to us then.

I doubt he made huge money in his career compared to a lot of footballers. He knows his value is at its highest its going to get and probably wants to cash in on it, big money move will no doubt bring a nice signing on fee and a good wage increase. Can't blame him.

Yeah I get that, if he's offered something he can't say no to.

He's on 6k a week here aparantly, iv no idea what a Club like Villa would offer him to even be number 2 but I suppose they would at least double that so youre right, I wouldn't blame him although it would be a shame.

I just can't see that happening.

Let's say Etheridge goes for £10m and there is still say £10m left in the budget as currently we have received more than we've spent. Can you really see Warnock spending £20m odd in the Championship?

The most he has paid for a player whilst we have been in the Championship is the £6m he spent on Flint and the same amount he wasted on Madine.

In the two and a bit months since the season ended we've signed two players who are realistically able to go straight into the team and a few back ups and in the next two weeks we really need to sign a quality striker and midfielder and I'm still not comfortable with the cover for Peltier.

We'll see.

Very much how I read NW's comments

Joe Day has impressed me so far and Smithies is more than adequate in this league. Especially with the 4 lads in front of them.

I'd cash in for the right price. Especially if it means strengthening other positions with the cash.

Are we really that low on funds that we have to sell the player of the season before we can buy.

We are the minority David, but I am with you, we went down last season through not buying a quality striker and won't go up this season if we don't bring three more quality players in and sell one of our best players.
