ETHERIDGE TARGETED AS VILLA EYE GOALKEEPER SIGNING

Villa News

Aston Villa want to sign a goalkeeper before the transfer window slams shut, and according to a report from The Express and Star, Cardiff City man Neil Etheridge is a target.

The Bluebirds shot-stopper earned plaudits for his displays in the Premier League last season but was unable to help keep his side afloat as they were condemned to relegation back down to the Championship.

However, it seems Etheridge could yet have a chance of playing top-flight football in the upcoming campaign, with Villa sniffing around.

Aston Villa to make late swoop for Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge - reports

Neil Etheridge remains a target for Aston Vila

Aston Villa remain interested in Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

According to the Express and Star , Villa are set to step up their search for a new goalkeeper before the close of the summer window, with Etheridge understood to still be on their radar.

Villa have so far been frustrated in their efforts to bring a new keeper on board, with their efforts to snap up Jack Butland thwarted by Stoke City's £23m valuation.

Talks over a deal for Burnley's Tom Heaton have also reportedly failed to progress, and boss Dean Smith could once again look at the Cardiff shot-stopper.

The player is understood to enjoy a strong rapport with Smith and goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler, who worked with the Filipino international during their time together at Walsall.

Sources close to Etheridge had suggested Villa had already made a bid earlier in the window, although those claims have been categorically denied by Cardiff , who are keen on keeping their number one at the Cardiff City Stadium this summer.

That comes despite the recent signing of Newport County's Joe Day , who alongside Alex Smithies offers boss Neil Warnock plenty of options between the sticks ahead of the new season.

anything 10m or over we should really sell him.

Perhaps this has been the hold up in transfers as we expected to finance new players by selling him and adding to the funds available?

Quite obvious we do not need Day and Smithies.

I do wonder whether the goal keeper situation will be key as we try to finalise signings.

As others have said, we don't need Etheridge, Smithies and Day. If I was a betting man I would say that either Etheridge or Smithies will go.

It would take a big bid for Etheridge for him to go but Smithies is highly rated by others (I can't judge as we've hardly seen him) and we would probably more than make our money back (£3m+).

It wil be interesting to see how this pans out but I'm guessing Warnock already knows as there is no way that Day would have signed as a 3rd string keeper.

not a penny less than 10m

if this is how we operate as a club, then we must get as much as possible.

In reality, Etheridge is gone only for the right price. If Stoke want 23m for buckland, then I'm sure we should get 10 to 15m for Etheridge, if not - keep him, hes great.

I think anything around the 10m and I think it would be great business especially if we can reinvest.

I wonder if one of them goes if Murphy rejoins, I don't think he has joined another club yet?

ETHERIDGE TARGETED AS VILLA EYE GOALKEEPER SIGNING

However, it seems Etheridge could yet have a chance of playing top-flight football in the upcoming campaign, with Villa sniffing around.

Dean Smith has added significant reinforcement to his first-team squad already this summer but has not yet recruited a new goalkeeper, with this likely to change before the start of the season.

The Express and Star reports that Etheridge remains a target, with no further progress made in Villa’s pursuits of other targets.

Stoke City are holding out for a huge fee worth £23 million for Jack Butland, while discussions between the club and Burnley for Tom Heaton have reached an impasse.

If this is the reason we have been holding back I despair. We must have made at least 30million last year and with the parachute payment this year there should be no need to sell to finance new players. We will never have a better opportunity to get back into the Premier League

All our players are available at the right price if they want leave.
I can see this happening although I hope not.

If Stoke want £23 million for Butland then surely we should be looking for at least £18 maybe £20 million??

Is Butland any better than Etheridge??

I don't think he is far off but Butland is 4 years younger, add on a fortune because he is English and has been playing at a higher level for longer than Etheridge

£15Million minimum and they save £8Million on Butland, otherwise, they can foxtrot off!

If this is true I really hope the club play hardball on this one.

Villa are throwing money around like confetti and the closer it gets to the window closing the more desperate they will become.

If Stoke feel able to reject an offer of £23m for Butland then I would be very disappointed if we don't hold out for at least £12m-£15m for Etheridge.

We saw the last time we got promoted how vital it is to have an absolutely top quality keeper - the lad from Newport MAY have the quality needed but it's a gamble. Smithies from what I've seen of him so far (not much admittedly) inspires no confidence at all.

I agree and we need a proven striker rather than 3 goalkeepers, we can always get an emergency loan keeper outside transfer window if required! Can’t see point of having three keepers, how many games did Murphy play last season?
Didn’t Kodja partner Reid at Bristol City when he scored his 20 goals, would be an excellent shout?

For me this is going to happen.... unfortunately as I think he is fantastic...

BUT, Villa seem happy to splash the cash so we should play hard ball for £15m.... they'll soon up the bid as they cant keep away. FFP are going to be all over those bastards like a rash, and well nab him back next yearin crossing over leagues for £200k when they get relegated and have to sell players...
